The National Conversation is an unprecedented community engagement effort that is designed for and driven by local governments. Communities can register at www.climateconversation.org.

DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS: Dallas Mayor Tom Leppart will declare March 28th Earth Hour day in the big “D” during a press conference on March 4th. Houston is also participating and turning out their lights.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS: The city’s iconic Gateway Arch will go dark as St. Louis announces it will take part in Earth Hour.

AND IT’S ONE, TWO, THREE LIGHTS YOU’RE OUT: The world famous WWF Panda (known to friends simply as “Pandy”) will take the field at the San Francisco Giants exhibition game in Phoenix on March 23rd, for live broadcast back in the Bay area. The scoreboard is set to go dark during the 7th inning stretch and the announcers will have Earth Hour message points in hand as they chat up the event on-air. Special thanks to national sponsor Esurance for bringing Pandy to the ballpark! Esurance makes it easy to offset your vehicle’s CO2 emissions. This special deal is only available for a limited time, so visit www.esurance.com/EarthHour to get all the details and sign up!

SHOW ME THE MONEY: National sponsor Wells Fargo will begin displaying Earth Hour ads on its ATMs across the US in the next few weeks asking people to take part in the largest climate event in history.

FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL: The Church of Sweden will ring its bells across the country to signal the start of Earth Hour. Down under, Sydney Ferries will be sounding the horns of all its ferry boats operating in Sydney Harbour at 8:30 pm, heralding Earth Hour in the city where the campaign first began.

PAST IS PROLOGUE: If 2009 is anything like 2008, the final weeks leading up to Earth Hour will bring a massive uptick in interest. We want to thank our friends and supporters who are working overtime to make this the most successful climate change event in history. A special shout-out to 2009 national sponsors Esurance, The Coca-Cola Company, Cox Conserves, Wells Fargo, and HP. If your company or organization wants to play a role in supporting this historic event, please drop us an email at EarthHour@wwfus.org and register at www.EarthHourUS.org.

Wherever you find yourself on March 28th, the odds are darn good you’ll find a city or community somewhere nearby that is making plans to turn out the lights for Earth Hour. With less than a month to go, nearly 700 cities are seeing the light and turning it off in support of action on climate change. We are nearly three quarters of the way towards our global goal of 1,000 cities!

Mark your calendar, tell your friends. Earth Hour is March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm.

9X World Surfing Champion Discusses the Outer Banks & Beach Access

The discussion about beach access on the Outer Banks is a hot topic.  As with most disagreements, both sides carry valid points.  Rather than take a stance on the subject, I’ll let a recent letter from the 9X World Surfing Champion, Kelly Slater (the Tiger Woods of surfing), speak on the subject.  The Outer Banks has a tremendous amount of natural beauty and natural resources to offer the wide variety of people that grace the coastline every year, and the views of a surfer could easily be echoed by a kiteboarder, fisherman, shell collector, bird watcher, etc.

KELLY’S TAKE:
I’d have to say it’d be absurd not to think of waves as natural resources right alongside beaches, minerals, fish, and birds. The resource is used as a pleasure, necessity or business for everyone on earth. Surfing is used as all three things. Not only that, we surfers bring to light many of the issues that arise with regards to pollution and erosion concerns. There are no better people for the job as it is inherently connected to our everyday lifestyle.

The good fortune we’ve all had of being able to have access to surfing all the beaches along the shores of the Outer Banks has created many life long memories for tens of thousands of surfers and families who enjoy the area for all of its different resources. Many of the surfers I’ve been there with over the years are avid birdwatchers (which I find funny) and almost all of them are fishermen. Any day without surf is quickly filled with fishing and a freshly caught dinner.

I truly hope that surfing and waves and their beach access is equally considered in the decisions regarding the Outer Banks future. The Lighthouse has stood as a symbol of East Coast, and US, surfing since I can remember and is a mecca for easterners and all US surfers alike. Please consider this fact when determining the future of our sacred destination.

Sincerest Thanks.

Outer Banks History Center Celebrates 20 Years

Marine Corps war correspondent David Stick took a job as a cartoon editor for the “American Legion Magazine” when he returned home from World War ll. He was always very interested in the history of North Carolina, so he began collecting any information or artifacts that he could find about North Carolina.  When he collected enough information, he realized that all the artifacts should have a home, and the Outer Banks History Center began.

This year, the History Center celebrates its 20th anniversary and honors the founder for his vision and contributions to the center.

A new exhibit which will be called “Preserving Timeless Treasures: The Outer Banks History Center turns 20” will officially opened on February 27th.  The exhibit tells the tale of how the Outer Banks History Center came to be and talks about how Stick grew this library into a world class research center.  The exhibit will be on display daily through December 31.

Hours change seasonally.  Call (252) 473-2655 or visit www.obhistorycenter.ncdcr.gov for details.
