NC Symphony

Eighth Annual Concert at Roanoke Island Festival Park on June 19th

The Dare County Tourism Board welcomes for the eighth year the North Carolina Symphony Summer Pops Concert at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo on June 19, 2009.  Once again, this event is free to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.  Gates open at 6 p.m. with a pre-show program by the Concert Chorale of the Outer Banks at 7 p.m.  The NC Symphony program begins at 8 p.m.

“This event continues to be one of the most talked about and well-attended community gatherings on the Outer Banks,” explains Aaron Tuell, Director of Public Relations for the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.  “The language of music has a way of striking common chords that resonate in all of us, and we are so very fortunate to be able to bring the NC Symphony once again to Dare County, for residents and visitors alike to share a magical evening.  If you have never seen William Henry Curry at the helm, then prepare for a spellbinding experience.”

Resident Conductor William Henry Curry will lead the NC Symphony with selections of classical favorites from Strauss, Mendelssohn and Wagner, as well as exciting music from Hollywood including John Williams’ Star Wars and Superman, Danny Elfman’s The Simpsons theme and Henry Mancini’s lovely Moon River. Curry will begin his 14th season with the orchestra in 2009-10.  A favorite of summer audiences across the state, Curry delights in sharing the best symphonic music with young and old alike.

Roanoke Island Festival Park and the town of Manteo partner with the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau to make this annual event an unforgettable evening in the open-air waterfront concert venue.  Bring a picnic basket and portable chairs or blankets to enjoy a fantastic program under the stars.  Admission is free, but the Manteo Rotary Club will be on hand to accept donations of non-perishable food items for local food pantires. For more information, contact the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau toll free at 877-629-4386 or email information@outerbanks.org.  Check outerbanks.org the day of the event for any inclement weather notifications.  In the event of inclement weather, the rain location with be Wright Brothers Pavilion at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.

Summer Travel is Picking Up. Great Outer Banks Deals Available.

Summer travel is looking good

Industry experts are predicting that this summer should be hot for the vacation rentals and travel industry.  A few variables are coming together to boost the summer travel season; it’s a blend of real change, demand for a vacation, and psychological shifts.  Another boost to the summer travel is lower gas prices.

AAA announced that it is predicting an increase of 1.5 percent of Americans that will be traveling on vacation during Memorial Day weekend this year compared to 2008.  32.4 million travelers are expected to take a trip of 50 or more miles away from home.  This is a significant increase from the 31.9 million Americans that traveled last year during Memorial Day weekend.  “Last year, soaring gas prices and deteriorating economy resulted in far fewer trips being taken than had been forecasted,” said Robert L. Darbelnet, AAA President and CEO. “The good news is, sharply lower gasoline prices and plentiful travel bargains have Americans feeling better about taking a road trip this summer, which should help tourism based economic activity throughout the nation.”

If you are planning a summer vacation, this will be the year to get a great deal on your vacation property.  This is especially true for folks looking to visit the Outer Banks.  Great Deals Available, call 800-395-2525 or visit www.OuterBanksVacations.com.

New Outer Banks Ghost Tour – “Graveyard of the Atlantic: Pirates, Legends, and Lore”

pirate-skull-crossbones  Beginning in June, visitors to the Outer Banks will become privy to the secret life of pirates and the paranormal phenomenon of phantom ships in the new “Graveyard of the Atlantic – Pirates, Legends and Lore” tour presented by Ghost Tours of America, Inc.

The tours are an expansion of last year’s very popular “Ghost Tours of the Outer Banks.”  Meeting at the Town Center Kiosk in Manteo, the 90 minute walking tour will be held every Tuesday evening beginning June 9 at 8 p.m. Cost for the tour is $13 for adults and $8 for children 10 and under.

Featured stories include: “Pillow the Life Saving Dog”; “Blackbeard the Pirate’s Pact with the Devil”; the phantom ship, “Carroll A. Deering and many more. According to owner, Andrea Martinshin, “We had so many ghost stories last year that we were unable to cover the nautical ghost stories and pirate lore which is such a big part of the Outer Banks. Individuals that enjoyed our ghost stories last year will find the same quality experience on our new tour.  If you enjoy fun facts about pirates – then this is the tour for you!”

On Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m., more paranormal happenings will be presented in the “Ghost Tours of the Outer Banks tour.  Using the same format, ghost stories from Kitty Hawk to Cape Hatteras are told as well as segments on “How to Communicate with Ghosts” and “Ghost 101”.

In order to be sure that each visitor has an entertaining and enjoyable experience, reservations are required for both tours.  Reservations can be made by calling 252-573-1450.

Pirate Bones?

pirate-skull-crossbones  Kevin Duffus, Blackbeard historian and author, is attempting to reopen a 274 year old estate of a man from Beaufort County that he thinks was a member of Blackbeard’s pirate crew.

Duffus believes the crew members’ bones are stored in a box in Raleigh, and says that he will need access to the estate to clarify if the man was in fact part of Blackbeard’s crew.  Edward Slater is the possible crew member’s name, a landowner and merchant who died in 1735.

With a little help from Slater’s descendants, Duffus is planning to run a series of DNA tests to determine whether or not the bones are of Edward Slater.  If the bones prove to be Slater’s, history could be rewritten.  Duffus believes that if the bones are in fact Slater’s, this will prove that not all of Blackbeard’s pirates were murdered in Williamsburg, VA, as popular history states.

State officials have neglected to recognize Dufus’ petition to be named executor of the estate. State law provided that the state archaeologist is required to preserve human remains that are in state custody.  Brian Blount of Springfield, MO, is supporting Duffus’ suggestion, and is considered Slater’s grandson times seven. He testified in court in support of Duffus’ petition. Supporters of this petition will also help support a fund to pay for the DNA analysis, which is estimated to cost about $1200.

Ban on Plastic Bags?

State Senator Marc Basnight is continuing his campaign to have plastic bags removed from all stores in North Carolina

At first Basnight’s goal was to remove the bags from stores on the Outer Banks Counties, but if this bill is successful, then it could be a law that would be imposed all over the state.

In place of plastic bags would be bags that are made of 100% recycled paper.

The Bill to have plastic bags removed from Dare, Hyde, and Currituck counties was passed on Wednesday.  The bill will only apply to retail outlets of more than 5000 square feet and with more than five stores in the state. “We sell beauty on the Outer Banks,” Basnight said.  “We want people to come to our community to spend time, to see sunsets, shoreline, water, but you also see these flimsy bags on the shoreline, on the Wright Brothers Memorial.”

It seems the bill is being backed by politicians in both political parties, and environmentalists also back the bill, pointing out that plastic bags require energy to make and usually end up in landfills.

Senator Stan Bingham, a Davidson County Republican who drives a vegetable oil-fueled car, shrugged at Basnight’s proposal.  “If that is what the county wants, that’s fine,” he said.  What about taking this bill statewide?  “Then we’ll talk,” said Bingham.  “In my district they’re more concerned about a job than plastic bags.”
