Cross-country Bike Ride to Benefit Outer Banks Wildlife

Paul Rudershausen will leave Coos Bay, Oregon on August 1st for a bike ride that will benefit the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter.

The ride will span about five weeks and will end in Atlantic Beach.  You can follow his progress at www.pedal4wildlife.org. Donations can be made online.  Sponsorships are also available.

“A trip, in my mind, is like a vacation.  A journey  is like a spiritual awakening, if you will, because it has emotional and physical challenges,” Rudershausen said.  His solo travels will take him through a dozen states covering an estimated 3200 miles and benefit countless orphaned and injured wildlife.

It’s a personal journey with a Community cause.

Reporters Forced to Hide to Glimpse Wright Brothers’ Flight on the Outer Banks

Wright Brothers  In 1903, the Wright Brothers took off on what would be the world’s first airborne flight on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

By 1908, the brothers had been mastering flight for quite some time, most of which was done in complete privacy.  Little did they know that they were being watched on some of their flights.  Five big city reporters hid in a nearby patch of woods to watch.  In fact it was these reporters that helped make the Wright’s historical moment so well known.

The Wrights had worked previously is complete privacy, so everyone had their speculations on whether or not the brothers actually took to the sky in flight.  These reporters helped remove all doubt from the people of the world that the Wright Brothers actually did take flight.  Larry Tise, a history professor at East Carolina University, has an upcoming book on the subject and states, “In all the swoop of a single day, the world stopped speculating about the possibilities of flight and watched in awe as it was demonstrated to anyone who could read.”  This is a truly amazing story, the day in 1908 truly changed human life for the better.

The Wright Brothers monument is opened year round, feel free to visit anytime to learn more about this amazing feat in aviation.

The Outer Banks Welcomes Progress

In a recent entry to the Kennebec Journal, a columnist compared the differences between the Outer Banks of North Carolina and other vacation destinations on the east coast, particularly Maine.

In article, the author points out the fact that a lot of towns in New England seem to be stuck in the past while the Outer Banks surges forward in growth.  He highlights the fact that many years ago, there was nowhere for people to shop for everyday household items, now there is K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and multiple Harris Teeter and Food Lions.

The main difference that the author noticed is the fact that people embrace growth on the Outer Banks with open arms, while towns in New England tend to be a bit more close-minded or pessimistic about growth.

OBX has been named as one of the most family friendly beaches in the US.  Locals are always looking to meet someone new on the Outer Banks and there has never been a better time to visit us than this year!  We look forward to welcoming you with open arms.
