One of North Carolina’s Best Kept Secrets

Sunset  Every Year, visitors to the Outer Banks are learning about one of the OBX’s best kept secrets, Currituck County.

Currituck County was established in 1688 among the original colonies, and was one of the first settled areas in the new world.  This county is one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina.  Some attractions to this area are unspoiled beaches, a great collection of history, wild horses, great outdoor activities and gorgeous weather.

Currituck is an area that has something for everyone, especially the nature lover, and it is just a short drive from the metropolitan Hampton Roads area.

New Ordinances for Outer Banks Wild Horses?

The Currituck County Board of Commissioners weighed their options at their Monday, July 6 meeting to decide if a change to the county ordinance restricting how close individuals may approach the wild horses located on the northern Currituck Outer Banks.

County Attorney, Ike McRee, met recently with Lieutenant Jason Bank of the Currituck Sheriff’s Department and Karen McAlpin of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund to discuss some concerns that people were getting to close to the wild horses to take photos, putting children next to the wild horses and even walking in the middle of a herd.

McRee stated in the memo that as currently drafted, the Code of Ordinances does not prohibit such acts unless the person has lured or in some manner enticed the wild horse to approach them.

McRee continues that the proposed ordinance change will make unlawful any person intentionally coming within 50 feet of a wild horse. Law enforcement, animal control, wild horse sanctuary officers and veterinarians rendering treatment to a wild horse would be exempt from the 50 foot limit.

Cabs Around the World

Thurs and Friday at 6:30 pm

July 7th, 2009

Dear Friend,

Though I tend to drink whites in the summer, we continue to sell far more reds than whites, even in summer.  Particularly in the heat of July and August, try chilling down your reds in the fridge for 15 minutes or so before you serve them…..a slight chill is appropriate (about 62 degrees).  The wine will warm up quickly….about 4 degrees as soon as you pour it.  Over 70 degrees the alcohol component of the taste of the wine becomes more pronounced than the fruit.

In as much, let’s do a cab tasting in the middle of summer!

This week we will be doing our reserve tastings on Thursday and Friday at 6:30pm.  The theme is ”Cabs around the world”……we’ll be comparing cabs from S. America, Europe, Australia and the US.  The tasting is just $20.  Please call for reservations to 252-491-5311.

For the value conscious (and who isn’t these days), our line of Coastal Vine wines from California are selling really well.  We have Cab, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio all at $5.99…and all true to the varietal (means they taste like they are supposed to taste).

We hope to see you all soon!
