Serendipity Moved & Under Renovation

The Rodanthe Home “Serendipity,” which was made famous in the movie Nights Of Rodanthe, is undergoing some renovations.

The Home was saved from being demolished by Ben and Debbie Huss of Newton, NC, who moved the home just in time.  The couple has been spending time on the Outer Banks recently trying to decorate the house as closely as possible to how it appeared in the film.  The couple has limited time due to the fact that the first rental of the season is due to check-in May 5th.  Mr. & Mrs. Huss negotiated to buy the house in January.  “We just had to save it,” Ben Huss explains.  “We weren’t going to let it fall into the ocean. It’s not an antique house or a historical house, but it’s an iconic house, and we just couldn’t let it die,” Ben mentioned in a recent interview with the Island Free Press.  According to Huss, preserving Serendipity is a financial gamble for him and his wife, “but I’m an old, hard-headed, crazy risk-taker,” he says with a laugh and a smile.  “We want to bring Serendipity back to its movie-style glory so people can enjoy it.”

The home was originally constructed in 1988.  In those days, “Serendipity” would have been the first home that you would see after crossing the Oregon Inlet Bridge, but now that spot across from the Mirlo Beach sign is left empty.  “Serendipity” did not have much dune protecting the foundation, so it was only a matter of time until the home caused problems for the owners.

Work has been ongoing to the building’s exterior to recreate the look of the enchanting “Inn at Rodanthe,” as it was fashioned by moviemakers.

  3. That is so neat that someone decided to save the Serendipity. I was at the Outer Banks last year with my family and that is one thing that we talked about. The house where Nights in Rodante were filmed. Interestingly enough we are staying in Rodante. Keep posting updates as I will be looking for it when we arrive at the OBX this June!

  6. Where did they move the house? Do you still manage the rental or can you direct me to the sompany that does?

    Thank you

  7. Hi. Thanks for taking a look at the blog.

Serendipity was moved a few hundred yards south from its original location. We do not manage the home. I did a quick search online, and I couldn’t find the management company. My guess is that it could be Hatteras Realty, and if it’s not, they should be able to give you the right management company. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. Good luck hunting…if you are interested in staying on the northern beaches (Nags Head – Corolla), we’d love to help you find a house that meets all of your vacation needs.

    Thanks.

  9. My boss and another coworker told me Serendipity was destroyed recently, but I’ve not been able to find anything about that. I actually saw it on a trip to OBX last year and am hoping it has survived. I know it was moved, so I’m hoping everything after the move has been moving forward with it’s fix up I’ve heard about.

  10. Hi Ash,

Thanks for taking a look at our blog.

No worries, all is just fine with Serendipity. Like you said, it was moved early this year. It went through renovations, and it’s now open for rentals. In fact, the owners are even doing a holiday open house at Serendipity at the beginning of December. Here’s a link to more info: http://blog.outerbanksvacations.com/2010/11/12/nights-in-rodanthe-holiday-open-house-at-serendipity-on-the-outer-banks/

    Have fun!

  11. I fell in love with the movie and all that has been happening with Serendipity. I am so delighted that it has been saved and everyone will be able to enjoy it’s wonderful energy. I am an interim innkeeper and soon relocating to the outer banks. Visiting Serendipity will be one of the first things on my places to visit when I arrive.

  12. Will the Serendipity be like a Bed and Breakfast, where you can stay for a few days, or let out as a longer term rental ? Will tours be given for tourists who would like to see it? When will all this start?

  13. Hi TC,

Great questions. We do not manage this house, so I’m not 100% sure, but here’s my understanding…

I believe the home is being rented as a vacation rental home, so you can most likely rent it for a week or more at a time. I do not believe it will be a bed and breakfast like “Nights in Rodanthe.” They did a holiday tour, but I’m not sure if this will be a regular occurrence, especially considering it will most likely be rented out during the much of the year. I think you can rent it now, but I’m not sure what company is managing it. You might want to try Midgett Realty (http://www.midgettrealty.com/nights-in-rodanthe.htm), and if they don’t rent it, they can most likely point you in the right direction.

    Good luck!
