Outer Banks History Center Gifted Previously Unseen Photos

A stroke of luck and some kind generosity have led a group of photos from the late 1800’s to the Outer Banks History Center.

The pictures show wreckage from a major hurricane in 1899, and some have never been seen by local OBX historians.  Luckily, many of the photos contain hand-written captions describing the scene.  One of the photos shows a shipwreck washed ashore, and others display the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Hatteras Village.

If you have any old OBX pictures, the Outer Banks History Center would love to see them.

Hot Dogging is Serious Business on the Outer Banks

Capt'n Franks Outer Banks

Capt'n Franks Outer Banks

The Outer Banks Voice recently covered a polarizing topic, the wiener.  Love them or hate, hotdogs, like the Outer Banks, are a symbol of summer fun.

It’s rare to be outside during the winter enjoying a dog, and most fancy dinners don’t offer beenies and weenies.  Almost by default, if you’re enjoying a hotdog, you’re probably in a pretty casual environment, and considering that it doesn’t get much more casual than the OBX, wieners and the Outer Banks seem like a great match.

Capt’n Franks sure thinks so.  Capt’n Franks is a long-standing OBX icon that proudly caters to hotdog lovers.  After three decades, the owners have determined the Capt’n needs a signature dog, and they are going above and beyond with this wiener creation.

Capt’n Franks has joined forces with the Weeping Radish Farm Brewery in Grandy to create a beef and pork dog that is crafted from grass fed, free-range animals raised in North Carolina and seasoned with a secret blend of 12 spices.  That’s right, an organic dog with a secret recipe created in-state; this is not your average wiener!

I have to admit, I’m not a big hotdog person, but Capt’n Franks may have won me over with this one…definitely worth a try.

Outer Banks Named in List of America’s Best Little Beach Towns

Outer Banks Sunrise

Outer Banks Sunrise

Travel & Leisure recently released their list of America’s Best Little Beach Towns, and the Outer Banks made the list!

Here’s what they had to say about the OBX:

Duck, NC

How could a place named Duck not be charming? Seven miles north of Kitty Hawk, this Outer Banks town offers beaches that are fairly uncrowded—and why? With no public beaches, you have to be staying here to access either the sand or water sports.

Outer Banks Surf Lessons

You get more than just a house when you stay with Seaside Vacations (www.OuterBanksVacations.com)…

You get a true Outer Banks vacation experience. A vacation should be more than just a house at the beach. It should be time with friends and family, a chance to relax and unwind and an opportunity to experience the local culture.

This is a video of some happy Seaside Vacations‘ guests enjoying the Club Seaside surf lesson with Outer Banks Boarding Company.

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Pay Day

The second Dawn Patrol of the week paid off.

On Monday I posted a picture of my attempt to find some early morning surf that didn’t work out so well, but today was a different story.  A beautiful summer day on the Outer Banks with some fun swell rolling in; sets were about waist high and clean.

It’s hard to beat a morning surf session on the OBX in July!

Forbes Acknowledges the Outer Banks As a Great Vacation Spot – Again!

Early this week, Forbes included the Outer Banks in its list of America’s Island Paradises, and for the second time in a week, Forbes is giving a nod to the OBX as a great vacation spot.  But this time, they are coming at it from an entirely different angle…the air.

A recent Forbes article chronicles a trip to the OBX by air in a small private jet that lands at the First Flight Airport, an aviator’s holy land of sorts…the home of the Wright Brother’s first flight.

The article highlights the great beaches, restaurants, and history available on the Outer Banks.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

If you have never been to Kitty Hawk, add First Flight Airport to your list. Touching down here and visiting the Wright brothers memorial site is a pilgrimage for all aviators. Check out the Outer Banks Visitor Bureau for details on where to stay and what to do. So toss in your beach towel, some suntan lotion and maybe even that folding bike and head on to First Flight Airport for an afternoon of sun and fun!

Outer Banks Triathlon On for September

Outer Banks Triathlon

Outer Banks Triathlon

The Outer Banks Triathlon is back, and perhaps bigger and more well organized than ever.

An OBX triathlon was a staple on the Outer Banks for 24 years…before triathlons were as popular as today.  Unfortunately, things changed, and there hasn’t been a true triathlon on the Outer Banks in about seven years.  Attempts have  been made in the past couple years to get the triathlon going again, but weather and water conditions have not cooperated.  A couple years ago there was “dirty water” in Manteo, and last year an offshore hurricane cancelled the swim leg due to large waves.  The races went on as duathlons – bike and run only – but that takes a lot of the excitement out of the race.

In 2010, the triathlon is going back to its roots.  This year’s Outer Banks Triathlon start, finish and transition area will be at the Old Swimming Hole between the Dare County Airport and the N. C. Aquarium on the north end of Roanoke Island on Sept. 18-19.  It will consist of three races that feature the same format, swim, ride and run, but with different distances – Sprint, Olympic and Half.

The route is ideal for racers with a newly-paved road and a canopy of trees that help to keep racers out of the sun.  The Old Swimming Hole also offers a beach and grassy park with Gazebo for spectators and racers to enjoy.

Outer Banks Sporting Events organizers are looking for 250 volunteers as they plan to host three triathlon races over two days in September.  To volunteer or for more information, call Jim Snyder at 252-255-6273.
