Outer Banks Fishing – Trout are Biting!

Fall on the Outer Banks is pretty ideal. In addition to beautiful weather, warm water, and wide open beaches, OBX fishing is at its peak in the fall.

As the natural elements adjust, and the water temps begin to drop, fish start running…blues, spot, mullet, and one of the fall’s best OBX fish, trout.

This video was shot at dusk on Monday, October 18, 2010 in Kitty Hawk. North and south of the Kitty Hawk Pier. A bunch of surfcasters and pier fishermen enjoying the evening bite.

Get your waders and rod…meet you on the beach.

Outer Banks: Sunday Afternoon Fun at the Beach

Outer Banks Wide Open Spaces

Outer Banks Wide Open Spaces

Fall has settled on the Outer Banks, and with it comes perfect OBX beach weather.

This past weekend brought bright sun, blue skies, warm temps in the 70′s, and a light off-shore wind cleaning up waist high waves. A perfect day to enjoy the sun and take in the sights.

The beach is always interesting. Never know what will turn up. A nature exhibit, interesting people watching, great surfing? Who knows?

This past Sunday we had it all. Wide open spaces, a sea turtle boil, hula hoopers, a jet ski pulling a dude on a surfboard, some surfers, lots of people watching, and some quality time with the family.

Here’s a quick picture essay of the days events.

Enjoy.

Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report – 10.18.10

Good afternoon. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report for Monday, October 18, 2010.

Perfect fall weather on the Outer Banks. Bright sun, blue skies, temps in the mid 70′s, and a light wind out of the west.

Unfortunately, no surf today, but yesterday had waist to chest swell coming in, and the light west wind shaped them up nicely. The end of the video has some pictures from yesterday.

Without surf, we turn to fish, and the fish are biting! Blues, Trout, and Mullet are being caught from the surf and the piers.

Great time to be on the OBX.

Enjoy.

Ready, Set, Go! 2010 OBX Marathon Right Around the Corner

Outer Banks Marathon

Outer Banks Marathon

It’s official, fall has arrived on the OBX.  The days are getting shorter, and judging by the Beach & Surf Reports, the temps are cooling off.  It’s tough to see the summer fade away, but it’s great to enjoy the change of seasons, and fall is one of the nicest times of year on the Outer Banks.  So, no complaints from this guy.

In addition to empty beaches, warm days, and cool nights, fall on the Outer Banks means the OBX Marathon is right around the corner.

2010 marks the fifth annual OBX Marathon, and the event is growing by leaps and bounds.  The Marathon, along with other sporting events like the Outer Banks Triathlon, was recently taken over by a newly established group, the Outer Banks Sporting Events.  Jim Snyder, the Marathon event director, and his team have done an amazing job promoting and organizing top-quality events, and the 2010 Marathon will be one to remember.

The OBX Marathon will take place the weekend of November 13th, and it includes events for the entire family…runners and non-runners…even a 26.2 yard “Diaper Dash!”

If you’re a runner looking for an amazing race in an amazing location, there is still time to register.  But hurry, the event is filling up…registration for the ½ marathon is close to closing!

If you’re coming down and need lodging, we’d love to help you find a home that meets all of your needs…we’re even offering free early check-in and late checkout for race participants!

Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report – 10.14.10

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report for Thursday, October 14, 2010.

Great OBX fall day. Starting out with bright sun and temps in the upper 60′s. There’s a chance of rain this afternoon, but hopefully it passes us by. The temps should stay in the upper 60′s to lower 70′s for the next few days.

The wind is still here though. About 10 mph out of the ENE today, but it should swing around to the NW in the next day or two, and it will start blowing hard…upper teens to lower 20′s. So, it should be a warm but breezy weekend.

Unfortunately, no surf to report, but the fish are biting…a lot of Blues at the Avalon Pier in the past couple days.

Enjoy.

Outer Banks Lands on Yahoo Travel’s List of Top 10 Places to Take the Kids Before They Grow Up

Roanoke Island & The Lost Colony

Roanoke Island & The Lost Colony

Working from suggestions in the book 500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up, Yahoo Travel just released their list of Top 10 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up, and the Outer Banks made the list…Roanoke Island to be specific.

Here’s what they had to say about the land of the mysterious Lost Colony…

Roanoke Island

In 1587, on Roanoke Island, between the Outer Banks and the North Carolina mainland, 120 men, women, and children landed to settle England’s first permanent New World colony. Virginia Dare — granddaughter of their governor, John White — was born that year, the first child of English parents born in America. When White sailed back to England, he intended to return within the year.

But a war with Spain kept White away from Roanoke for three years; what he found on his return in 1590 was a mystery. The rudimentary houses that he had helped build were dismantled, the entire area enclosed by a high fortlike palisade. No trace of the “Lost Colony” was ever found.

The visitor center at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site tells the colony’s baffling story in exhibits and film; outdoors, all that’s left of the fort is a silent mound of dirt, preserving the site’s sense of mystery. You’ll also want to flesh out the story by visiting the more commercial Roanoke Island Festival Park, mid-island in Manteo. A 69-foot-long three-masted bark, the Elizabeth II, lies moored across from the waterfront — a composite 16th-century ship built for the 400th anniversary of Sir Walter Raleigh’s first exploratory voyage to Roanoke in 1584.

Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report 10.13.10

Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report for Wednesday October 13, 2010.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills. Unfortunately, the wind is drowning out most of the introduction, but you can zip to the 50 second mark to see the beach and the pier.

It feels like fall. It’s an overcast day, but the sun is peaking out. Lower 70′s.

Beach is empty except for surf casters, and the pier is busy with fishing as well.

No surf.

Enjoy.

Outer Banks Surf Contest: Battle of the Banks Waiting Period Starts Friday!

2010 Outer Banks Battle of the Banks

2010 Outer Banks Battle of the Banks

The Battle of the Banks is one of the best surf contests the OBX has to offer.

It pits a team of surfers from Virginia against a team of surfers from the Outer Banks, and if the rivalry isn’t enough to get the blood boiling, the contest has a 6-week waiting period to make sure it goes off in the gnarlyest conditions possible.  The surf forecast is watched religiously, and the call is made at the last minute to make sure the surf conditions are ideal for huge Outer Banks surf with giant chocolate milk colored barrels the OBX is famous for.

The waiting period for the contest starts this Friday, October 15, and runs through December 1st.  According to the Battle of the Banks FaceBook page, “the contest will hold out for the most hollow and treacherous conditions possible.”

Seems like the perfect recipe for an amazing contest…count me in!

Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report – 10.11.10

Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report for Monday, October 10, 2010.

This video was shot at about 9:15 this morning in Kill Devil Hills down the road from the Wright Brothers Monument.

Gorgeous OBX fall weather. 80′s today with a light southwest wind. Upper 70′s to lower 80′s all week. Maybe a little rain on Thursday.

A fun knee-high longboard wave coming through today, and it’s cleaning up nicely thanks to the southwest wind.

Beach is pretty active today…shell collectors, fishing, and just enjoying the great weather.

Perfect beach day.

Enjoy.
