Outer Banks Wildlife & Nature Documentary

Refuge Pea Island - Hurricane Bill Filming on the Outer Banks

Refuge Pea Island - Hurricane Bill Filming on the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is home to an amazing amount of undisturbed nature and wildlife.  Mile upon mile of empty beaches and natural conservation land.  It seems like someone should make a movie about the abundance of OBX nature.

Bingo!

STRS Productions, a professional film development team based in North Carolina, released their newest documentary in late 2010, and the movie focuses on the wildlife available in Pea Island Refuge located on the southern portion of the Outer Banks.

From the STRS website:  The new release Refuge Pea Island is the third to be released of the series of films that will be covering our beautiful National Wildlife Refuges in eastern North Carolina. Refuge the series concentrates on the wonderful wildlife that can be seen while visiting one of these majestic places.

The trailer looks amazing, and I can guarantee any OBX lover will be hooked in seconds.  Here’s the description of the movie from the trailer:

“Witness wildlife as it was meant to be seen. Third in the “REFUGE” series, Pea Island lies off the coast of North Carolina where wildlife abounds and the environment is ever changing. Award winning film makers Blake and Emily Scott once again deliver. A year in the making, covering all four seasons, narrated by Denise Kelly, and filmed in High Definition completely without baiting, blinds, or staging. The power of the Atlantic Ocean is felt in dramatic footage of a hurricane and ‘noreasters battering the coastline, and full of astonishing shots of maritime wildlife that includes Finback Whales, Harbor Seals, Loggerhead Turtles and an incredible sampling of bird life. REFUGE – Pea Island captures all the drama and beauty that exists on this coastal treasure. To purchase a copy of this film on DVD go to www.refugewildlife.com.”

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 1.24.11

Outer Banks - 1.24.11 - Pretty Day at Kitty Hawk Pier

Outer Banks - 1.24.11 - Pretty Day at Kitty Hawk Pier

Good morning, Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, January 24, 2011.

This video was shot at the end of Kitty Hawk Pier at 8:30 AM.

It’s a pretty start to the week. Sun and blue skies. But there is a chill in the air. Low 40′s today with a light wind off the ocean. Should warm up over the next couple days…50′s by Wednesday.

Knee high swell coming through, but the East wind isn’t helping the surf. Although, the good news is that we should see head high swell for Wednesday and Thursday. But the forecasts don’t have the winds matching up right now. However, the wind forecasts change quite a bit, so keep your fingers crossed.

Stripers are still biting. I counted six boats on the horizon this morning, and we are still getting a lot of reports our of Oregon Inlet of boats catching their limit of rock fish.

Enjoy.

Outer Banks - 1.21.11 - Warm Sun in KDH

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday January 21, 2011.

This video was shot in Kill Devil Hills at Sweet Dreams.

It’s a pretty day. Bright sun and blue skies with temps in the 40′s. The sun feels warm, but the 20 mph NW wind is adding some chill to the air. The winds will stick with us for the next few days, and temps will cool a bit making for a chilly weekend, but hopefully it will warm up early next week.

No surf today. A trace swell is coming through, but not more than knee high.

Fish are still biting though. Still getting a lot of reports of boats heading out of Oregon Inlet getting their fill on stripers.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Lighthouse Restoration Hits a Snag

Bodie Island Lighthouse Restoration

Bodie Island Lighthouse Restoration

The Bodie Island Lighthouse had been going through major repairs in a restoration effort, and unfortunately, the restoration process has uncovered further issues.

The repairs uncovered significant safety issues as layer upon layer of paint and corrosion were removed.  The process revealed troublesome cracks and breaks in the structural supports that hold the balcony and affect the stability of the top of lighthouse.

The cracks and breaks need to be repaired asap so the progress that has been made isn’t lost.

The structural issues will delay progress on the project and require additional funding.  The National Park Service is currently seeking additional funding at the Federal and regional levels, and the project will be paused until the additional funding is secured.

Once the project is completed, the Bodie Island Lighthouse will be opened to the public for climbing.

Outer Banks - 1.19.11 - Pretty Surf in Kitty Hawk

Outer Banks - 1.19.11 - Pretty Surf in Kitty Hawk

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, January 19, 2011.

This video was shot just south of the Kitty Hawk Pier at 8:30 AM.

It’s a rainy, overcast, and foggy morning, but the temps are in the 40′s and the wind is light out of the west. Overall it’s pretty comfortable, and hopefully the sun will push through by the afternoon. The next few days should be sunny with temps in the 40′s.

We saw some great OBX surf yesterday, with head-high waves and some overhead sets coming through, and a light offshore wind was cleaning the waves up very nicely. I wasn’t able to get in, but it was pretty from the beach, and there were only a couple people out enjoying the surf at Avalon Pier. The swell has died down this morning, but the west wind is still making the waves glassy. The waves are in the waist to shoulder range this morning, and they will die down throughout the day.

Still some great OBX fishing going on. Lots of rock fish still in the area, and still a bunch of reports of boats heading out of Oregon Inlet catching their limits.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Bike Week - Harley Store

Outer Banks Bike Week - Harley Store

9 years?!  Can you believe it’s already been 9 years for the Outer Banks Bike Week?  Time flies.  And the event just keeps getting bigger and better.

2010 marked the first year Bike Week ran for eight days. Thursday had been the traditional kickoff day in prior years. This gave the bikers more time to get in the longer guided tours, extended rally activities and the area attractions. And for 2011 the OBX Bike Week is being extended to include 2 full weekends (9 days)!

Outer Banks Bike Week

Outer Banks Bike Week

The springtime weather after a long winter makes this biker paradise the perfect getaway. The Outer Banks area runs from southern Currituck County, to its northern beaches of Duck and Corolla, through Dare County and the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, over to Roanoke Island, Mann’s Harbor and then further south to Hatteras and Ocracoke Island. The venue is spread out enough to ride without any crowd or traffic concerns but intimate enough to make friends for life.

Like any good bike rally, Outer Banks Bike Week™ has more than enough activities and entertainment to keep riders going all week. The rally events are all free due to the local business sponsors who have been extremely enthusiastic and generous in supporting this growing event during the spring.

Updates on 2011 events coming soon.

33rd Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show on the Outer Banks

Outer Banks - Frank Stick Memorial Art Show

Outer Banks - Frank Stick Memorial Art Show

The 33rd Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show opening reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m., and will be located at Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery, 210 E. Driftwood St., Nags Head. The show will remain open for viewing until Feb. 25.

The Frank Stick Memorial Art Show includes a wide variety of local OBX fine art ranging from conceptual to realistic. All original work, featuring sculpture, painting, drawing, fiber, pottery and mixed media, this is the longest running visual art exhibition in Dare County.

Stick gained recognition as an illustrator for magazines such as Collier’s, Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and Outdoor America during the early part of the 20th century. He is most known for painting hundreds of hunting and fishing scenes to illustrate outdoor and adventure stories.

In addition to his contribution to the art world, Stick had great vision. After visiting the Outer Banks in the 1920s on a surf-fishing trip, he fell in love with the region and its potential as a tourist destination. As a result, Stick played a large role in establishing the Cape Hatteras National Seashore as America’s first national seashore.

Cash prizes will be awarded for “Best in Show,” “Excellence,” and “Honorable Mention” as chosen by judges based on merit. In addition, a “People’s Choice” award winner will be selected by public ballot during the opening reception.
