Animals in Art Fundraiser on the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is best known for gorgeous beaches and great seafood, but there is also a thriving OBX art community.  There are a wide variety of local artists, an endless supply of gorgeous scenery and natural inspiration, and a number of art galleries.

One gallery in particular, the Seaside Art Gallery, is well known for its wide variety of pieces and an extensive collection of local and master artists.  Seaside Art Gallery exhibits the work of local and contemporary artists, as well as a wonderful selection of art by such masters as Picasso, Chagall, Whistler, Icart, Renoir and many others. Sculpture, porcelain and art glass by Hummel, Staffordshire, Tiffany and others are represented. As well as a fine selection of estate jewelry. Since the early 1980′s, a major feature of Seaside Art Gallery has been their large collection of original animation art by such studios as Disney, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, United Features Ltd., and other animation studios.

In addition to a large collection of beautiful art, Seaside Art Gallery has a large affinity for animals, and in partnership with the Outer Banks SPCA, they are bringing Animals in Art to the OBX.

Artists have captured the importance of animals in our lives ever since they have been painting on cave walls. This show will feature our wildlife and artists and those that celebrate the animals we share our lives with.

The Outer Banks SPCA, in collaboration with Seaside Gallery’s 50th Anniversary, is launching an exciting new February event for local residents and visitors – Animals in Art.  On display at Seaside Gallery are animal sketches, paintings, and etchings, as well as figurines, jewelry, cards and many other items.  Portraits of your favorite pet can also be arranged through the Gallery.

During the month of February, Seaside Art Gallery will donate a portion of all sales of animal-related art to the Outer Banks SPCA to help keep animals in our community healthy and safe.  Founded in 1988 by concerned local citizens to address community needs for animal control and care, the Outer Banks SPCA is a private nonprofit organization that relies on donations and volunteer efforts to support its programs.  The Outer Banks SPCA is hosting an opening reception at the Gallery on February 10th, 5-8 PM.  The public and press are invited to join SPCA Board members for this preview event.  For more information call Seaside Gallery at 441-5418 or the Outer Banks SPCA at 475-1587.

Mother & Daughter Valentine’s Day on the Outer Banks

Valentine’s Day usually focuses on “lovers” more so than “loved ones,” but the Hallmark holiday is really about the celebration of love in all its forms.  And what better way to celebrate love than with some mother/daughter fun?!

Renee Landry, an amazing floral and event designer on the Outer Banks, is offering a super fun Mommy & Daughter Valentine’s class. Details below.

Renee was one of three finalists for Obama’s Chief White House Florist position, and I can also brag about Renee from personal experience….she was the florist for my wedding, and according to my wife (the true expert), the floral arrangements were out of this world.

As an added bonus, Renee will be a new addition to Club Seaside this year!…a complimentary design class offered to Seaside Vacations guests! Stay tuned for more details coming soon.

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 2.7.11

Outer Banks - 2.7.11 - Great day for a Porch Swing

Outer Banks - 2.7.11 - Great day for a Porch Swing

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, February 7, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at “The Sea Hawk” in Kitty Hawk.

It’s a nice start to the week; temps in the mid 50′s. A bit overcast and foggy to start, but they should clear off by the afternoon. The remainder of the week should be pretty similar with temps dropping a bit to the 40′s and sun with us for most of the week.

Unfortunately, no surf. The ocean is flat, and there is almost no wind today. The wind is real light out of the east, so there’s a nice salt air smell.

The fish are still biting. A lot of reports of boats out of Oregon Inlet catching their limit of stripers. Unfortunately, only a few reports of catching rock out of the surf, but the year is still young.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 2.4.11 - Fishing Biting at 5th St.

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, February 4, 2011.

This video was shot just south of the Avalon Pier at the 5th St. Beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

It’s a wet, chilly day. Much different from the spring-like weather on Wednesday that brought temps in the upper 60′s! Temps in the lower 40′s today with a light E wind coming of the water. The temps should rise to the 50′s for the weekend, and the sun will make a return within the next day or so.

No surf to report, and the forecast doesn’t have a surf coming this way for a few days. Could be clean over the weekend, but it will be less than knee high.

Good news is that the fish are biting! I counted 10+ boats on the horizon this morning. We are still getting a lot of reports of boats heading out of Oregon Inlet catching their limit of rock fish. I saw a video of on of the charter boats, the Poacher, that caught their limit of stripers in 10 minutes this week! Clearly a log of fish in the area. And we are starting to get some reports of rock being caught out of the surf. So, hopefully we’ll have a good run out of the surf real soon.

Enjoy!

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Sun Returns, but So Do the Chilly Temps

Outer Banks - 2.3.11 - Chilly Temps Return

Outer Banks - 2.3.11 - Chilly Temps Return

The sun has returned, but so have the chilly temps. Stiff N wind. No surf. Starting to hear reports of rock fish in the surf. Salty air smells great today. @ Kitty Hawk Beach

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 2.2.11 – Happy Groundhog Day

Outer Banks - 2.2.11 - 60 Degree Groundhog Day

Outer Banks - 2.2.11 - 60 Degree Groundhog Day

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, February 2, 2011.

This video was shot at the Lillian St. Beach Access in Kitty Hawk at 8:45 AM.

Happy Ground Hog Day. Phil popped out of his hole and didn’t see his shadow this morning, so that’s great news…spring is on the way! Especially good news for everyone in the north getting buried in snow right now. Sorry y’all…we feel for you.

Not to rub it in, but it’s 60 degrees on the OBX today! Always a good time to be on the Outer Banks.

Unfortunately, we can’t get too use this spring-like weather; chilly temps return tomorrow. Today is overcast with a 15-20 mph wind swinging SE to SW and hopefully to W by the afternoon. The sun will return tomorrow, and stay through the weekend, and the temps will inch back into the 50′s by the weekend.

If the wind swings around to the West, we could have some clean waist high surf this afternoon. 60 degree temps make it a pretty nice day to get in the water. Water temps are still a cold 39 though, so a wet suit is a must.

Great fishing still going on. A lot of reports still coming in from boats heading out of Oregon Inlet catching their limit on rock fish. Unfortunately, still no reports of catching stripers from the surf. But that should change soon…still early in the season.

Hope the snow melts for you quickly, and if you’re on the OBX, get out and enjoy the warm salty air.

Have fun!
