Sun up on the Sound. Feels like spring! 60 degrees and sun. West wind should switch north. No surf; the ocean is flat. Puppy drum & tuna biting…Outer Banks fishing is heating up as the ocean heats up (water temp 50 degrees).

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 3.21.11 – Happy Spring. Adios Winter Beard.
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, March 21, 2011.
This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM
Happy spring! It’s official, spring has arrived. I got rid of my winter beard, so I’m ready for the warm weather.
It’s a nice day to start the season. Temps in the 60′s today with a light southwest wind. It’s a bit overcast, but hopefully the sun will find it’s way out this afternoon. This weather should be with us for most of the week. Perhaps a little rain, but temps should stay in the 60′s, and the sun should make a few appearances as well.
Decent day for surf. Waist to chest swell coming through. The offshore wind is helping the cause, and there will be relatively clean surf for most of the day. Ocean water temps are up to 50 degrees. This could be the best chance of surf this week.
OBX fishing is going strong…and getting better. Still getting a lot of reports of blue fin tuna biting offshore, and as the water warms up, more fish will start biting as well. We started to get reports over the weekend of puppy drum catches in the Sound, and this usually carries over to the surf pretty quickly. So hopefully we’ll hear of some surf casting catches soon.
Enjoy!
Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 3.18.11 – Warm & Sunny All Weekend!
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, March 18, 2011.
This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:30 AM.
Two days until Spring officially starts! And it is starting to feel like spring…just in time for a big weekend on the Outer Banks. Sun, blue skies and 70+ degrees today!
Great weather will be with us for the weekend, sun and 60′s. Perfect timing for great OBX events. The annual Outer Banks Taste of the Beach started yesterday, so there are four days of great culinary events, and Sunday is the 22nd Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The ocean is not very active today. There’s a light west wind cleaning up what little swell there is, but it looks like a fun little longboard wave…probably knee to waist high. This inactivity should stick with us for the next few days.
OBX fishing is going strong. There are a lot of reports of blue fin tuna catches offshore, and the big news is still the 805 pound blue fin tuna that was hauled into Oregon Inlet last weekend…new NC state record! The water is beginning to warm down south, and we are starting to get reports from Ocracoke of puppy drum catches out of the surf.
Enjoy!
Outer Banks Birthday Celebration – Nags Head Turns 50!
Nags Head turns 50 in 2011! Where does the time go? Rather than getting ready for retirement, Nags Head is getting ready to celebrate.
Hitting the half-century mark is definitely cause for celebration, and lots of plans are coming together. The Outer Banks Voice is reporting that an Anniversary Committee has created a great calendar of events for the next couple of months.
Town Float (March 20th)- Kicking things off at the annual Kelly’s St. Patrick Day Parade, the town float will lead the parade with a procession of employees, officials, staff and past dignitaries.
The 50th anniversary T-shirt- A voluntary art competition at Nags Head Elementary will determine the design for the celebratory T-shirt. Judging will take place on April 15th at the school and will include entries from every grade. There will be one winner from each grade that will be presented at the student assembly April 20th. The winning entries will then be displayed at Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery through May 18, when the exhibit will move to Town Hall.
Tours of Town Hall (May 18th)-Town Hall will open its doors to the public for a tour of the town’s permanent art collection from 4 to 7 p.m. The Town Hall offers an extensive collection of local, permanent art. The event is free, and includes a reception with snacks.
Windmill Point Carnival- A carnival is set at the Windmill Point site from June 14 to 18 from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. It includes the rides, games and foods as well as local vendors offering arts, crafts and other items. Starting at 10 a.m., there will be an Opening Ceremony, the presentation of the Town gift, the annual Town Lightkeeper ceremony, a birthday cake cutting (and eating!) and a raffle for a homemade quilt entitled “Nags Head Ocean Waves” as well as a custom piece of jewelry from Jewelry By Gail.
Nags Head Golf Links (June 14th)- golf tournament to benefit the Community Watch program.
Jenette’s Pier Celebration (June 14th) – To close out all of that excitement, the night of the June 14 ends in a gala event at Jennette’s Pier in the new meeting facility. Live music and food from 6 to 10 p.m. Music and fun provided by “Old Enough to Know Better.” Only 200 tickets are available.
Commemorative T-shirts, flags, stickers and a cookbook of local recipes entitled “50 Years and Still Cooking” will be available from various merchants and restaurants in Nags Head, as well as at Town Hall and on site at the carnival.
OBX Pic O’ the Day: Pretty Day in Kill Devil Hills
Outer Banks Taste of the Beach Starts Tomorrow – With Some St. Patty’s Flare!
Tomorrow marks the first day of the annual Taste of the Beach here in the Outer Banks. It promises to showcase the best the beach has to offer from restaurants to specialty beers. Since the event falls on St. Patrick’s Day many places have decided to go with an Irish theme for food and drink specials.
From a swanky Champagne Lounge to pub crawls to Corned Beef and Car Bombs, Taste of the Beach (TOB) has it all. There are 77 events over the four days.
Some of the participating local restaurant owners have released details of their Irish themed weekend specials. Lucky 12 owner says they will be serving Irish Car Bombs along with the 100 beers they keep on hand all year long and corned beef and cabbage for dinner. Ocean Boulevard on the beach road has also planned an extensive Irish dinner and several drink specials.
In Duck you can experience the Duck tapas Crawl tomorrow and Friday night, featuring The Blue Point, Red Sky Café and Roadside Raw Bar and Grill. These culinary extravaganzas have become increasingly popular every year and according to Taste of the Beach’s Facebook page, there are limited tickets still available!
The Outer Banks Epicurean will also be showcased at Taste of the Beach. Focusing their amazing culinary talents on a unique OBX event, “Cookin’ Outer Banks Style, Kindred Seafood Spirits, A Cajun Influence” – folks will learn how to take their catch from the sea to the table.
As a side note, we are proud to have the Outer Banks Epicurean as one of our Club Seaside partners, offering a complimentary OBX cooking class to Seaside Vacations guests.
No matter what your taste or budget there’s an event for you.
Mangia, mangia!
Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 3.16.11 – Thunderstorms, but warm…and getting warmer.
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
This video was shot in Kitty Hawk at “Lucky Tides” at 8:30 AM
We have some wet weather to start today. Thunderstorms are in the area to start the day, but the storms should move off by early afternoon, and the sun should return soon. Temps are in the upper 60′s today, and getting warmer as we approach the weekend. The sun and warm temps will be with us through the weekend.
Not much going on for surf today. It was better than expected when I got to the beach, but still only waist high or so….looks fun though. There is some swell in the water, and almost no wind this morning, so there’ s small window of opportunity for some small surf.
As for OBX fishing, the big news is still the NC state record blue fin tuna that was hauled into Oregon Inlet over the weekend. 805 pounds! Huge. It shows the quality of fish that are in the area now. We are getting a lot of reports of big schools of blue fin tuna offshore and a few schools of yellow fin here and there. We are also starting to get reports of puppy drum being caught out of the surf in Ocracoke. Rock is might be over, but OBX fishing is still going strong!
Enjoy.
