Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, June 8, 2011.
This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk.
Hello summer. Beaches and piers are busy every morning now. Gorgeous weather with temps in the 90′s, bright sun, and a great offshore breeze out of the Southwest. Yep, summer has arrived on the Outer Banks. This great weather will stick with us through the weekend…great beach weekend ahead!
We have a little swell in the area today, and the offshore breeze is cleaning it up nicely. A fun longboard wave, and a great day to be in the water. In addition to the warm air temps, the water temps have jumped to the 70′s!
Great OBX fishing too. Offshore is still seeing consistent dolphin and yellow fin tuna with some bill fish mixed in. The piers, bridges, and Sound are very consistent with a wide variety of fish – Spanish mackerel, blue fish, flounder, croaker, sea mullet – but the big catches over the past week have been cobia. As the water temps have warmed, cobia have moved into the area, and the catches have been very consistent. We got a great report from our friends at Rock Solid Fishing (www.RockSolidFishing.com) from yesterday, and they were fishing near shore and caught three large cobia – the largest being 66 pounds!
Always a good time to be on the Outer Banks…especially now!

The final 5 of the 35 locally rescued green sea turtles have been nursed back to health and set for release back into the ocean this weekend. The turtles were found earlier in the year suffering from cold-stun symptoms and most of them lethargic and covered in barnacles.
North Carolina Green Sea Turtle
30 of the rehabilitated turtles were returned to the Gulf Stream this spring and the remaining 5 have been swimming around it tanks at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.
Most of the time turtles get released under the supervision of N.E.S.T volunteers but for this event N.E.S.T is inviting the public to send off the turtles right here on our beaches. The staff of the National Park Service, the aquarium and N.E.S.T believe this will be a great way for the public to experience something incredible and learn about the rescuing process.
Volunteers will follow each turtle as it makes its way back to the ocean with a giant sign of that turtle’s personal turtle facts. LOL
Beach releases are rare. Most locally rescued turtles are winter cold-stun victims usually ready to return to the ocean when the coastal water is still chilly, so they are brought to the Gulf Stream. Yet with the water warming up to 70 degrees the turtles are safe for release here.
The release is scheduled for either Saturday or Sunday, depending on weather but the final decision will be announced mid-week online at www.nestonline.org.

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, June 6, 2011.
This video was shot at Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.
I’m making it official this morning, summer has arrived on the Outer Banks. I know, the true beginning of summer isn’t until the end of June, but we’re passed Memorial Day, this is the last week of school on the OBX, the sun and temps have been perfect for about a month, and the beach and pier are busy at 9 AM Monday morning. Yep, summer has arrived!
It is a gorgeous day. 80′s and sun, and this weather will stick with us all week. Feels like it’s been about a month without rain. The plants are thirsty, but we’re loving the sun and perfect temps.
Unfortunately, no surf this week. There will be a nice offshore wind headed out of the southwest most of the week, but it doesn’t look like we’ll see much swell all week. Hopefully I’m wrong…but I don’t think so.
The great news is that the OBX fishing is going strong. Offshore they are catching dolphin, tuna, and a few bill fish mixed in. The bridges and piers are consistently reporting a wide variety of fish; spot, croaker, sea mullet, flounder, Spanish mackerel, blue fish, and cobia. A 44 pound cobia was hauled in at Jennette’s Pier yesterday…that’s a big daddy from the pier! The Sound is also very consistent with a wide variety of fish.
Although you can never be guaranteed you will catch anything, the event will be a great time regardless and includes fun for the whole family. If nothing is biting you can always take a walk on the many nature trails, enjoy a day at the beach soaking up the sun, plan a picnic or just come be a spectator!
The state limit for crabbing is 50 per day and for fishing a state issued saltwater fishing license is required so don’t forget it! Ive never been crabbing before but it sounds like a great time and 50 crabs would make a yummy dinner
The annual Crabbing and Fishing Rodeo will be held Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Outer Banks - 6.3.11 - Perfect day in Kill Devil Hills
It’s a Goldie Locks Day…not too hot, not too cool. Just right. Sun and upper 70′s with a great north wind blowing a cool breeze. No surf, but the water temps are warming. Fish are biting offshore, near shore, piers, bridges, and the Sound! Wide variety of fish – croaker, flounder, spot, blue fish, sea mullet, cobia, dolphin, Spanish makerel.
