The Surfrider Foundation is gearing up for their annual Big Sweep/Trashfest event and after Hurricane Irene this is coming at the perfect time. Volunteers will be collecting as much trash as possible from both beach and sound accesses. The clean up will be from 9am until noon followed by a “Trash Fest” after party at the Outer Banks Brewing Station from 12-4.
Surfrider Outer Banks Chapter is still looking for zone captains for the Chickahauk Access and Southern Shores Fire Department. It is going to take all of our community to join together to preserve the beauty of the Outer Banks. After Irene and seeing all the devastation to our area, this event will bring us one step closer to bringing the OBX back to life. Spread the word and get involved!
Outer Banks: 9.14.11 - Great Sunrise Surf Session in Kitty Hawk
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Bath House at 6:45 AM.
I was out of town last week. Sorry for the lack of reports, but it’s great to be back at the beach and back to the reports.
I know I say this a lot, but the fall really is the best time of year on the Outer Banks. September and October are amazing. Sun, 80′s, water at 75 degrees, empty beaches, great surf, and great fishing…plus the rates for vacation rentals are discounted quite a bit from the summer months. If you can spare a few days, I highly recommend a fall OBX trip. No place I’d rather be.
The trend of perfect fall weather continues today; sun, 80′s, water at 75 degrees, almost no wind, waist to chest surf, and the fish are biting. Tomorrow will be more of the same with the surf building a bit more. Friday through Sunday could see a little rain and a stiff northeast wind, but let’s focus on today, shall we?
I was up bright and early this morning to catch the sunrise and a sunrise surf session. The sunrise was gorgeous, as usual, and the surf session was great…I needed it.
When I arrived the surf was a bit smaller than I expected, but it built throughout the session, and by the time I got out at 8:30, it was looking great from the shore.
The surf will build throughout today, and should be in the chest+ range tomorrow with a great offshore breeze cleaning up the waves. Hopefully another sunrise session tomorrow if the wifey gives the OK.
Tropical Storm Maria is moving by the OBX out in the Atlantic, and the swell will build quite a bit from Friday – Sunday; overhead for sure. Unfortunately, the wind won’t cooperate. Hopefully we’ll have some great leftovers early next week. Fingers crossed.
As for fishing, OBX fishing is loving the fall weather. Offshore is catching yellow fin tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and blue marlin. The piers, bridges, surf, and Sound are still real consistent with a wide variety of fish…and some new ones showing up – blue fish, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, spot, pompano, black drum.
Any fellow DMB fans out there? Well if you didn’t know already, Tim Reynolds, the lead guitarist of Dave Matthews Band actually lives in Kill Devil Hills. Even cooler…Adam shared a duplex with him when he first moved to the Outer Banks. Reynolds recently sat down with Glide Magazine for an exclusive interview about his history with Dave Matthews Band and his solo career as founding member of TR3 (Tim Reynolds Trio). TR3 actually plays sometimes here locally and one of our very own Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty agents, Dave Martier, is the bands drummer.
He shared some pretty neat stories about being on the road with the band, how being part of such a successful modern rock band has affected him as a musician and what inspires him. Check out the article here to learn more about Tim and what makes him such a unique artist. Let us know what you think. Maybe if you are in the OBX you will see him around

“Each of us has an Irene story. Many of us have suffered damage, seen strange things, lost valuable stuff and even experienced injury. Regardless of what our own individual situation may be, even those who may have come through relatively unscathed, we have all experienced individual and collective trauma. The loss in our tight-knit community is extensive and the need for assistance is great,” says Gordon Jones, President of Seaside Vacations and Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty.

Outer Banks: 9.13.11 - Perfect in Kitty Hawk?
It’s tough to find true perfection, but today is awful close to a perfect fall day on the OBX.
It would be nice to see some more size in the surf, and maybe slightly cleaner lines, but it’s darn close to perfection.
All the elements of a great beach day – Sun, 80′s, empty beach, almost no wind (very light west breeze), water at 75 degrees, waist high surf, & fish are biting!
Duck is preparing for its 5th annual Jazz Festival, set to kick off October 9th at 11:00 am on the Duck Town Green. Seaside Vacations and Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty are proud sponsors of this free all day event offering a collection of some of the greatest jazz musicians on the East Coast.

OBX fall is here. 80 degrees, empty beach, fun surf, & fish are biting.
Fall on the Outer Banks is about as good as it gets. And we are just getting started.
A little overcast to start today, but the sun should make an appearance soon, and the week looks great with temps hovering around 80, water temps at 75 degrees.
Looks like we’ll be able to enjoy some clean, chest high OBX fall surf over the next few days. Some fun waves out there this morning, and it should get better as the tide fades towards the afternoon. The swell is going to jump to overhead by the end of the week as Tropical Storm Maria rolls through the Atlantic sending some big waves our way.
Fall fishing is in full swing as well – speckled trout, flounder, blue fish, pompano, Spanish mackerel, black drum.
The best part about moving into fall is 1-the weather and 2-the fishing. The surf and pier fishing is definitely hot but often you find yourself wondering what you should use for bait, to jig or not to jig, how big to be a keeper, etc. Luckily Jennette’s Pier will be offering a great new class on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon this month.
Catch-it, Clean-it, Cook-it with veteran fishermen Charlie Brewer will show novice anglers how to go from the hook-up to the flat-top. Just imagine hooking a big one and then turning it into lunch with help from an expert.
Jennette’s will also be offering surf fishing classes taught by Chris Crockett and other pier staffers on Wednesdays and Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. Anglers will hit the sand right by the pier and learn how to read the beach, land a fish in the surf and other essentials techniques to take home the catch of the day.
Additional fishing classes this fall include: Little Anglers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:10 a.m. to noon; Family Fishing weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m.; Pin-Rig Fishing Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays starting at 7 a.m.; Advanced Fishing on Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and Introduction to Jig Fishing on Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m.
Classes for children include Beach Explorations on Wednesdays Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, Marine Crafts on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m., Plankton Investigations on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wonders of the Wind on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m.
Night time classes include two favorites around Jennette’s – Parent’s Night Out on Thursdays and Creatures of the Night on Fridays. Parents can first drop their kids off for a program and pizza before heading out on the town from 6 to 9 p.m. The class is offered to children ages 5 to 12 each Thursday (except Sept. 22).
In Creatures of the Night, children can discover animals that lurk in the night around the pier on the beach and in the surf zone. Armed with buckets, flashlights and nets, participants hunt for creatures of the night from 8 to 9 p.m.
Good Afternoon! Here is the Outer Banks Beach, Surf and Fishing Report for 9/8/11. This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier in Kitty Hawk NC at 9:30 am.
Adam is out of town this week (we miss him tons!) but were lucky enough to have Bob get out there and give you all the beach report today. Things started out cloudy and rainy here in the OBX with expected isolated storms throughout the day. We’ve got temperatures in the lower 80′s with a light SE breeze and have only had the sun poke its head a couple of times so far.
The surf is a mess today. Wave heights from about 8-15′ scattered around the area. Looks like we are getting the leftovers of tropical storm Katia as she makes her way back out at sea. Unfortunately there are no clean waves and heavy rip current potential out there this morning. Things may change as the day goes on and the wind changes, so we will see.
Fishing remains steady with consistent reports of bluefish, spanish, some bottom fish and throw back trout. The past couple of days have been somewhat slow for fishing because of the strong waves and cold water in the area but will surely be picking back up soon.
The beach looked beautiful today despite the rain and it is an awesome day to get out there and watch these GIGANTIC waves break and searching the beach for washed up treasures.
If anyone is here in the OBX this week they know that the outbreak of mosquitoes in the area is terrible! Dare County announced today that they have scheduled an aerial spray operation this week for over 50,000 acres to help reduce the number of mosquitoes in our area. The abundance of mosquitoes comes in the aftermath of hurricane Irene and the amount of standing water she left behind.
The aerial application will begin Thursday evening, September 8 at approximately 6:30 pm and continue until about 2:00 am, weather permitting. September 9th and 10th will be back up days in case of bad weather. The aerial application may take 2 days to complete. Dibrom® is the pesticide being applied at the rate of 0.75 fluid ounces per acre. Aerial spraying is necessary to combat and control mosquitoes where ground spraying is less accessible and effective. This is the first aerial treatment this year in Dare County NC.
Vector Disease Control, Inc. (VDCI), a mosquito control company operating out of Dare County Regional Airport will be conducting the aerial spray operation. VDCI holds contingency contracts with multiple Counties and FEMA to provide application of adulticides on an “as-needed” basis.
VDCI will be using multiple twin-engine aircraft flying at an altitude of approximately 300 feet to conduct the aerial application. Each aircraft is equipped with an aerial spray guidance system specifically engineered for mosquito control operations. The planes are able to receive in real-time, meteorological conditions such as temperature, wind speed and wind direction. “This onboard equipment allows us to optimize the application within the intended treatment areas, while minimizing drift outside the target zone”, according to Malcom Williams, Manager and Chief Pilot Aerial Division VDCI.
Residents and visitors are asked to dump any standing water, as mosquitoes like to lay eggs in flowerpots, cups and old tires. Hopefully these spray treatments will help reduce the mosquitoes in the area and allow people enjoy the outdoors-scratch free! We will keep you updated on any further information released by the county. Remember if you are spending an ample amount of time outside, make sure you apply bug spray, especially during the evening.
