Blackbeards Cannon Lifted from Ocean Floor

Anyone dressing up as a pirate this year? Well just in time for Halloween archaeologists have lifted a 300 year old cannon from Blackbeard the pirate’s ship right here on the Outer Banks coast.

The eight-foot-long cannon was covered in sand and ocean debris called “concretion,” which will take archaeologists and students at East Carolina University as many as eight years to crack through before getting to the metal cannon. So far 12 cannons have been lifted from the ship including bits of rope, lead shot, gold dust, wine glass stems and leg shackles they have brought up with them.

They have been bringing up pieces of the ship since 1997 and are expected to be finished sometime in 2013. Artifacts can be found in various museums around North Carolina and all around the United States. It is the largest archeological project in the country.

Divers began preparing the ship weeks ago for the crane that eventually pulled the cannon to the surface. The sand-encased cannon will be taken to the Beaufort Maritime Museum for public viewing, and then moved to East Carolina University where researchers will work on it.

Maybe Blackbeard has some hidden treasure down there? Fun OBX fact… next time you are in the area make sure you check out all the spots around town where there are known shipwrecks or sunken reefs. There are a ton! If you are an adventure junky you can even go scuba or snorkeling down and see the wrecks. Lots of OBX’ers spearfish around the vessels because the fish hang out near structure. Don’t do this unless you have experience though because the ocean can be a dangerous place if you don’t know what you are doing. There are also restrictions on fishing on some of the wrecks so be careful!

‘Tis the Season…for Surf-casting that is.

Outer Banks Fishing

Outer Banks Fishing

Ah, fall on the Outer Banks. I know I talk about how great the OBX is during the fall quite a bit…but that’s only because it is! For reals. Amazing.

It is the end of October (27th to be exact), and we have bright sun, blue skies, 75 degree temps, water at 67 degrees, empty beaches, huge discounts on vacation homes, AND the fall fishing is fantastic!

See what I mean? Amazing, right? Warm air, warm water, and the beach to yourself. Doesn’t get much better.

Fall on the OBX is when the surf-casters start to come out of the woodwork.  Sunrise is a pretty cool sight with shoreline dotted with casters enjoying the start to a day at the beach.

But don’t just take my word for it (although, you could take my word and watch today’s beach report below). I came across a good article discussing Outer Banks fishing, so I figured I’d share with you.

The Connecticut Post recently offered a fall fishing overview of a variety of locations, and the OBX got some great coverage. I’ll let the article speak for itself:

“The Outer Banks, N.C.: The last time a few compatriots and I made the eight-hour drive to the Outer Banks, it was December. A small blizzard was raging when we crossed the bridge at Oregon Inlet. Also raging was one of the most massive bluefish blitzes any of us had ever witnessed. We jumped out of the car and caught 12-pound blues until our arms ached. The bluefish run has slaked in recent years, but there are still plenty of sea trout in the surf. When the mullet arrive in November, the black drum are not far behind.”

Ok, so the article doesn’t talk about the gorgeous fall weather – it actually mentions a blizzard – but still, you get the point…the fishing is amazingly good. Better than the writer “ever witnessed.”

If you are a die-hard fisherman, now is the time to be here. If you’ve never fished, and want to learn, now is the time to be here. If you’re somewhere in between, now is the time to be here. See a theme developing?…now is the time to be here…period.

What do you think? When is the best time to be on the OBX? Got any good OBX fishing stories? We’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below. :)

7 Outer Banks Tips from American Idol’s Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery

Any American Idol fans out there? You love Scotty McCreery, don’t you? Country singers seem to do well on Idol.

If you’re not familiar with Scotty, he’s an 18 year country singer from North Carolina who recently won the American Idol signing competition. So, overnight, he’s become a super star with hit country songs traveling around the country doing shows. Pretty amazing at any age, but definitely great for an 18 year old. Hats off to Scotty for his success.

One of the nice things about McCreery is that despite is quick success, he still seems very grounded and down-to-earth. Last week he had an interview with Fox News, and we were pleasantly surprised to hear how much he loves the Outer Banks!

Scotty is from NC, and he’s been vacationing on the OBX since he was a little boy, so he knows the beach inside and out. During the interview, he was talking about how much he loves to get back to the Outer Banks when he needs to relax and de-stress…see, celebs are just like you and me. :)

McCreery shared some great Outer Banks  tips during the interview – it’s clear he knows the OBX well. So we figured we’d pass on Scotty’s OBX tips to y’all.

  1. Stack ‘em High is a great spot for huge chocolate chip pancakes.
  2. Pizzazz Pizza is a fantastic choice for an OBX pie.
  3. Jockey’s Ridge is a great spot to see the OBX sights from above. (editors note: one of the best spots for an OBX sunset!)
  4. Don’t be afraid to try hang gliding from Jockey’s Ridge! Kitty Hawk Kites will hook you up… literally.
  5. Best OBX spot to relax? The beach and the ocean, of course!
  6. Don’t forget your fishing pole.
  7. The Outer Banks is the perfect spot to bring the extended family back together….all you need is “family and a couple beach towels.”

Thanks for the great advice Scotty! Please look us up next time you’re heading to the beach…we’d love to help you find the perfect vacation home! :)

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 10.27.11 – Perfect OBX fall day!

Outer Banks: 10.27.11 - Perfect fall day in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks: 10.27.11 - Perfect fall day in Kill Devil Hills

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, October 27, 2011.

This video was shot just south of the Avalon Pier at the 5th St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills.

Before I dive into the report, I want to send out a quick happy birthday to my parents. Oddly enough, they share the same birthday. :) Happy birthday Moms and Pops!

And back to the report…wow, it’s a nice day! Pretty much a perfect OBX fall day. Bright sun, blue skies, temps reaching the upper 70′s, light offshore breeze out of the southwest, and the water temps are still real warm…67 degrees at Avalon Pier this morning.

The only missing ingredient today is surf. Unfortunately not much surf to report. The offshore wind is keeping the swell clean, but the waves are only in the ankle to knee high range. If you can find the right spot, it’s a great to be outside enjoying a longboard wave, but it’s pretty small.

The swell is going to jump the next couple days though. Unfortunately, the wind is going to switch too. We have a cold front moving into the area tomorrow, and temps are going to dip to the low 60′s, maybe some showers, and the swell is going to jump to head high + through the weekend and into next week. Unfortunately, the wind is going to be pretty stiff out of the north and northeast, so the good swell won’t have a chance to turn into great surf. Fingers crossed something changes.

OBX fishing is going great. Offshore is catching their fill of black fin and yellow fin tuna. The piers, bridges and surf are very active with a wide variety of fish – spot, sea mullet, blue fish, some flounder, speckled trout, gray trout, black drum, some puppy drum starting to show up, it’s striper season, sheepshead.

Great time to be on the OBX. Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Time for some Monster Mash!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 10.25.11 – Pretty day. Feels like fall…

Outer Banks: 10.25.11 - Pretty & Windy in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks: 10.25.11 - Pretty & Windy in Kill Devil Hills

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, October 25, 2011.

This video was shot at the Hayman St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 8:15 AM.

October 25th? Already? Seriously only two months until Christmas?! How did 2011 go so fast? Good news is there is still plenty of gorgeous fall weather to enjoy on the Outer Banks.

Another pretty fall day today. Although, it is starting to feel like fall. Temps have dipped down to the mid 60′s and will hover between 65 and 70 degrees for the next five days. We have bright sun and clear skies, but there’s a stiff northeast wind that is adding a fall chill to the air. The water temps are still very warm though; 67 degrees at Avalon Pier this morning…and it’s the end of October! Awesome.

Starting to feel like fall isn’t a bad thing. It’s nice to see the change of seasons, and it’s a great time to be at the beach; mild weather, warm water, empty beaches, and great surf and fishing.

Unfortunately, there’s not much surf to report today. We do have some decent swell in the area, but the northeast wind isn’t helping. The wind will switch to the southwest tomorrow, but the swell is going to drop to ankle to knee. So the surf will be clean Wednesday and Thursday, but it will be real small. The swell jumps back to head high late in the week, but that north wind comes back as well. Looks like we could be out of luck for surf this week, but fingers crossed the wind changes, and hopefully the waves clean up early next week. Still time for a session without a wetsuit?!

As for fishing…tight lines all around! OBX fall fishing is going great. Offshore they are catching their fill of black fin and yellow fin tuna. The piers, bridges, and surf are very active with a wide variety of fish – speckled trout, gray trout, sheepshead, black drum, blue fish, some puppy drum starting to show up, and it’s striper season!

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival Nov. 8-13

Of course the millions of Outer Banks visitors come here every year to enjoy the beautiful beaches and attractions but I couldn’t agree more with Wings Over Water, that the ultimate attraction in our area is the wildlife, natural history and scenic views. As a chance to get out an enjoy the over quarter of a million acres of wildlife and wetlands, Wings Over Water is presenting the 15th annual Wildlife Festival from November 8-13th.

Here are just a few of the many great adventures planned for you and your family to experience!

  • Venturing into areas with combined bird lists of nearly 400 species.
  • Learning from experts how to shoot photographs that capture the unique beauty of the region.
  • Traveling to historic landmarks like the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station.
  • Visiting North Pond on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on Hatteras Island, the hottest spot for fall birding in North Carolina – or even visit South Pond which is usually closed to visitors.
  • Taking a ferry to the pirate Blackbeard’s hang-out on Ocracoke Island to enjoy the quaint fishing village and check out the birds.
  • Paddling the backwaters of the area or four-wheeling the area north of Corolla.
  • Visiting the ancient maritime forest of Kitty Hawk Woods for a look at this rare ecosystem.
  • Venturing into Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge at night in search of bear and other wildlife.
  • Absorbing the waterways’ natural beauty during a sunrise or sunset kayak tour.

  • Experiencing a Red Wolf Howling where the nearly extinct animal is now fighting its way back.
  • And many other wild experiences……

Just another great activity for any fall OBX’ers. Don’t say we didn’t tell you that fall is the best time to be at the beach. ;) For more information on the festival or to view a complete schedule and descriptions of all the events, click here.  Here’s a quick peak at some of the beauty to be discovered here in the Outer Banks.

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Fall = Empty Beaches

Outer Banks: 10.24.11 - Empty Beaches in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks: 10.24.11 - Empty Beaches in Kill Devil Hills

It’s definitely starting to feel like fall. Overcast skies this morning, temps in the 60′s, and a stiff northeast wind.

Water temps are still in the upper 60′s! And look at the beach…not a soul in sight. Fall is a great time to be on the Outer Banks, private beaches all to yourself. :)

Unfortunately, no surf today, but the fish are biting.

Local Outer Banks Art Show at Mom’s Sweet Shop

Outer Banks art, Carolina Coto

Outer Banks art, Carolina Coto

The Outer Banks has soooo many amazing qualities. The majority of people are drawn to the OBX for the mile after mile of gorgeous beaches. And don’t get me wrong, the beaches are world-class…and empty the majority of the year. But there is much more to the Outer Banks than waves, sand, and sun.

Nature, history, culinary delights. But my favorite could be the fantastic local art scene. There are a huge amount of talented artists on the Outer Banks, and on Thursday, November 3, we have the chance to be introduced to another brilliant member of the OBX art scene.

Mom’s Sweet Shop (coolest name for a skate shop ever, right?) is hosting the premier of local OBX artist Carolina Coto.

Mom’s Sweet Shop is throwing a sweet shindig to celebrate Ms. Coto’s debut, and it should be a rockin’ time with good food, good drinks, great people, and amazing art.
