New Exhibit at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

Great news for history buffs. The National Park Service, First Colony Foundation and Friends of the Outer Banks History Center have teamed up to present a new exhibit at Fort Raleigh National Historic site here in the Outer Banks. The exhibit is called Beneath the Sands: Past and Present Archaeology at Fort Raleigh and explores how archaeology can help unravel the story of what happened to the “First Colony” or Lost Colony.

The exhibition is presented as part of Roanoke Colonies Archaeology and History Week and is made possible by support from the Percy W. and Elizabeth G. Meekins Charitable Trust. Many of the artifacts will be on display for the first time and aim to show how scientific analysis when combined with historical context can provide clues to what may be America’s greatest historical mystery.

Roanoke Colonies Archaeology and History Week includes a week-long professional archaeological search for evidence of Sir Walter Raleigh’s colonies and Algonkian Indian habitation on Roanoke Island, with an interactive educational classroom without walls, and a public symposium focused on new discoveries. Other activities of the week will include a weeklong series of events with theatre, symposium, and archaeological research at Roanoke Island Festival Park.

Among the planned activities:

* Two of the nation’s pre-eminent historical archaeologists, Dr. Eric Klingelhofer and Nicholas Luccketti, will direct and train selected Dare County high school students and adult volunteers in field excavations.

* The original play, Shepherd of the Ocean, will be presented on Monday evening, October 10, by Elizabeth R & Company at Roanoke Island Festival Park and begins at 7 p.m.

* Tuesday-Friday, noted archaeologists and historians will present free public programs on the latest research on the Algonkian Indians of North Carolina, theories on the disappearance of Sir Walter Raleigh’s “Lost Colonists,” the settlement of Roanoke Island after the disappearance of the “Lost Colony,” and the scientific search for the Archaeological remains of the Roanoke colonies.

How cool would it be to see real life archaeological search right here in the OBX? Its amazing to take a step back and think about all the history that lies right in your backyard. The Lost Colony is such an amazing story which still has so many unanswered questions surrounding its disappearance. This would be a great event to take the kids to if you are in town this week. Nothing  like tying some education into a vacation…kids dig it ;)

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Sometimes, it even rains at the beach…

Outer Banks: 10.12.11 - Overcast at Avalon Pier

Outer Banks: 10.12.11 - Overcast at Avalon Pier

It’s hard to believe, but, yes, sometimes it even rains on the Outer Banks. Boo!…I know.

It’s not too shabby today, only a 50% chance of showers, but it’s definitely an overcast day. The warms temps still feel great though. Temps in the 70′s, water @ 68, a relatively stiff east wind at about 10-15 mph. The good news is it looks like the sun will be back soon, and the weekend looks perfecto!

There’s some decent swell in the water, but no surf today. Although, fun Surf tomorrow? The OBX surf forecast looks good tomorrow morning with chest high, clean surf and a light southwest breeze. But the wind should pick up and switch south in the morning, so get at the waves early. Friday and the weekend look decent for clean waves, but they’ll be small in the knee to waist range.

The Fall fish are biting! Piers are full, surf casters are lining the shore. It’s a great time to be fishing on the Outer Banks. Here’s a great OBX fishing overview we posted yesterday.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Your Secret Weapon: The Local Tackle Shop

You know when we run across great stories we have to share them with you all, so here it goes! Ever been out fishing and you keep getting bites but end up with nothing when you reel in? Well it happens to me all the time, especially because I am a newbie to the whole surf fishing thing. I have had a few successful trips but since its getting into fall and around here that means the perfect time for surf fishing, I figure I need all the help I can get!

Mike Sweeney of the Daily Advance wrote a great article on a recent fishing trip in Duck, and how he ended up catching over 20 bluefish by getting some tips from the local tackle shop. He also included some great info on whats biting in the area,w here and what kind of bait to use to reel them in. Here is his story…

“I’m at the beach in Duck this week and of course I have a surf rod in my hand.

I notice a sandbar about 100 yards off shore and I have a tandem leader with four ounces of lead on the bottom and shrimp for bait. I bait up the hooks, wade out and let it fly, but I can’t reach the sandbar. I also notice that when I wade out the drop off into the water is steep. It is the kind of beach where you take one too many steps and the water is over your head.

I get a couple of strikes, but when I set the hook I get nothing but an empty leader back. This happens time and time again, but no matter what I do it’s still empty hooks. I changed to smaller hooks, circle hooks, different leaders but nothing works so I know what to do next.

I put up the rod, open the cooler and enjoy the remainder of the day with my grandson on the beach.

The next day I resort to my secret weapon. I wake up early and head to the local tackle store. We are not talking about any huge super store, but the local guy who knows anything and everything about the area that you are fishing in. In Duck it is Bob’s Tackle Shop.

The owners have been fishing there for years and follow the fish in the Outer Banks closer than most. I know that they will be happy to tell me what I am doing wrong. I find out that the fish have positioned themselves right off the beach on the first drop off and in order to find out what is biting, you have to put a blood worm on the top hook and cut bait on the bottom hook, then pitch the bait right over the breakers.

If you catch a spot or croaker, then put blood worms on both hooks. If you catch a blue off of the cut bait, then double up on that.

Armed with that information, I go back to the same beach with the same tide and bait my hooks. I toss it just over the breakers and in less than a minute I set the hook on the first of 20 or so blues that I caught that day all thanks to my local tackle shop.

Those shops are a valuable tool for fishermen and in many cases they are the best asset you can have.

Local shops have first-hand knowledge of what’s happening right then and there in the area that you want to fish. They can give you tips and pointers that can make the difference between a good day and a great day.

Before you go out, make sure you stop by, support the local guy and see how it improves your trip.

There are many shops at the beach, but some of my favorites are Bob’s at Duck, the three TW’s locations up and down the beach and in Hatteras is Frank and Fran’s, but these are just a few.

In Elizabeth City there is Bass Ackwards Lures if you want to know what’s up around town and it’s Currituck Sports for the ICW.

These are just a few so try a bunch and pick your favorite and see how they can help you with your next trip out on the water.

What’s biting and where …

The fishing report this week looks great. With the weather taking a cool turn, it has really turned on the bite.

The north beaches are on fire right now, but ones in the south are still out of reach because of access.

This is the time of year when multiple species can be caught, including sea mullet, speckled trout, black and red drum all within reach. The fish are just off the beach and the water temps are around 70 degrees.

The wind is going to bring the big red drum into casting range this weekend and there was a speckled trout over six pounds weighed in this week.

The Kitty Hawk and Nags Head beaches are holding their own with croaker and a few spot left over. They are catching blues and Spanish off of the piers and the beach.

When you fish for blues off the piers, try the Gotchas and off of the beach you want to try cut bait. The road to Hatteras is still closed, but they are making some progress and should have it opened in the next week or so.

The fleet is back in Oregon Inlet and they are on the tuna bite, so if you like sushi, now is the time to call and book your trip.

The offshore boats have come back every day with limits of black fin and some yellow fin. There was even a couple of nice sailfish this week, but the mahi bite has slacked.

Stripers are in the inlet and if you can get to a bridge piling you have a chance of catching some nice fish. The season just opened on the Oct. 1 and the reports are good for this early in the year. The size this season is 18” minimum, three a day in the sound, and if you can catch a live croaker and drift it by any bridge structure, you may just be in for a ride.

The fresh water bite is also looking up with the large mouth catch getting better each week. Throw an off color spinner bait around the wood and flip the pads with your favorite worm. I like to throw a red, 5” ring worm with as small a weight as I can get away with and still make it through the vegetation.

Poppers and buzz baits are also a good choice, but you want something with a little color to it like yellow or red. If you throw a white bait, they are short striking the lure and you will miss out on some fish.

The white perch and brim bite is also on with Beatle Spins and live crickets the bait of choice.”

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 10.10.11 – Great fall week ahead…

Outer Banks 10.10.11 - Sunrise on the Sound

Outer Banks 10.10.11 - Sunrise on the Sound

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, October 10, 2011.

This video was shot at the Sutton St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 8:30 AM.

Happy Monday. Another gorgeous fall day. It was a great weekend with a lot of local events and great weather. The great weather is continuing today, and should carry through for most of the week.

Sun, 70′s, water at 69, and a light northeast breeze today. There could be a few spots of rain this week, but the temps will hover around 70 all week and the sun should be out for the most part. The northeast wind has been hanging out for a few days, but that should switch to the southwest by the middle of the week….good news for surf?!

There’s a little swell out there today, but not much surf. This northeast wind isn’t helping. The swell will jump up to the shoulder to head range over the next day, but the wind won’t match up to clean the waves. Luckily, that wind should switch offshore by Thursday, and it looks like we could have some clean, chest high waves towards the end of the week. Water still almost 70 degrees…last session without a wetsuit for the year?! Fingers crossed.

OBX fishing is going great. Fall fishing on the Outer Banks is awesome. Tight lines all over. Offshore is catching a lot of tuna – black fin and yellow fin. The piers, bridges, surf, and Sound are very active with a wide variety of fish – blues, spot, flounder, sea mullet, blow fish, pompano, black drum, stripers.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 10.6.11 – Pretty fall day & great weekend ahead…

Outer Banks: 10.6.11 - Pretty Fall Day in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks: 10.6.11 - Pretty Fall Day in Kill Devil Hills

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, October 6, 2011.

This video was shot at 8:30 AM at the Hayman St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills.

A gorgeous fall day; bright sun, blue skies, air temps at 70 degrees and water temps at 70 degrees. This weather will stick with us for the next few days, it will be a pretty fall weekend.

There is a strong northeast wind blowing at 10-15 mph adding a cool breeze to the day, and this wind should hang around for a few days. Unfortunately, this isn’t good news for the surf. There is some swell in the area, but the wind isn’t helping. Doesn’t look like we’ll have much surf for the next few days, but fingers crossed the wind decides to switch offshore.

OBX fishing is going great. Fall fishing is awesome…so many fish around. Offshore is catching a bunch of tuna, getting limits on black and yellow fin tuna. The piers, bridges, surf, and Sound are all very active – blue fish, spot, flounder, Spanish mackeral, pompano, black drum, and as of October 1st, striper season is open!

Great time to be on the OBX! Warm air, warm water, empty beaches, great fishing, and rental homes are heavily discounted from the summer months. Plus, the fall is a great time to experience some great OBX events. Many people assume the summer months are the most active on the Outer Banks, and it’s true from a tourist perspective, the summer months are very busy, but the fall is a close second. Businesses and restaurants are open, prices have decreased from summer peaks, there are no lines, and the fall offers a wide variety of great events.

This weekend is a great example; on Friday we have “First Fridays” in Manteo, which is a fun festival-like atmosphere with outdoor music, arts, and food; on Saturday there is a surf contest in Southern Shores and a skateboarding contest in Kitty Hawk, and Sunday brings the annual Duck Jazz Festival. Such a busy weekend!…and a such a great time to be on the Outer Banks.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!
