OBX Daredevils Out for 2012 Season: Franchise for Sale

Sad news for Outer Banks Daredevil fans. After 14 seasons team owners are shutting down operations with concerns they would be unable to break even in 2012. The Daredevils were one of the original Coatal Plains Leaugue teams joining in 1997. There will be 14 teams continuing in the league, including the Edenton Steamers, who will play in a seven-team East Division when the 54-game season begins May 29. Warren Spivey bought the Daredevils in 1999. The team moved from Manteo to Kill Devil Hills in 2006 when a group led by Marcus Felton bought the team prior to the season. According to the Outer Banks Voice, the Daredevils franschise will sit dormant in 2012 and is up for sale.

Oh no! I didnt even get a chance to go to one of their games! It seems that locals and visitors are having mixed reactions to the news. Some are saying that the talent just wasnt enough to keep fans engaged, some have said it was too expensive and others are saying its a shame to lose such a great team. Everyone should know that even if your local team hasĀ  a few bad seasons (Ahemmm…the Panthers), eventually things will turn around and you have to always stick with them.

We will keep you updated if there are any future announcements.

  1. As a yearly summer visitor, our family always enjoyed a night out with the Daredevils for the past several years. Great combination of young baseball talent, sideline antics, and hot dogs always taste better in the stands.

  2. Our family vacations in OBX every summer. One of our traditional outings on vacation is a Daredevil game. My husband and boys wanted me to check the schedule and see when they were home this summer. To my surprise, I had to tell them about what I found. It is a shame that the Daredevils won’t be playing this summer. We are a family of baseball players and spectators…we are sadden that we can’t go to the ballpark this year at OBX.
