Good morning. Here’s your OBX Moment of Zen for Friday, December 30, 2011.
This video was shot at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 8:30 AM.
Beautiful weather to close out 2011. Bright sun, blue skies, light offshore breeze out of the southwest, and temps around 60 degrees. Perfect weather to celebrate the New Year at the beach.
Not much surf to report. There’s a pretty little wave out there, but it’s small. Could to a good day to enjoy the weather with a longboard.
OBX fishing is slow, but stripers are showing up; so hopefully we’ll have a good bite soon.
Have a safe and happy New Year. Hope to see you soon. Have fun!
Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, December 29, 2011.
This video was shot at 9:00 AM just north of the Avalon Pier at the Hayman St. beach access.
It is great to be back to the beach after some holiday travels. Hope you had a great holiday.
We have a gorgeous end to 2011. Bright sun, blue skies and temps in the 50′s. Looking ahead to the New Year’s Eve weekend, we have sun and temps at 60 degrees. Perfect weather to celebrate the New Year on the OBX.
We have some fun surf this morning. Waist high waves and a light offshore breeze out of the southwest at 5 mph. The swell will fade throughout the day, and there doesn’t look like much surf over the next few days; so hit it this morning if you can.
OBX fishing is slow. Water temps have dipped down to the low 50′s, and most of the fish have disappeared. However, it’s striper season and we have some sporadic reports to some decent catches. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on a big bite.
Do you recall your first trip to the beach? Unfortunately, I was too young (or too old now) to remember my first beach experience, but based on my undying love for the salt air, sand in my toes, and waves knocking me around, I can safely assume it was love at first sight.
Luckily, Deborah can remember her first sight of the ocean, and she’s happy to share it with us. Here’s an awesome edition of our Outer Banks Everyday Magic series that tells the tale of Deborah’s first visit to the OBX…and the Ocean!
Thanks for sharing your great story Deborah!
My first visit to the Ocean was in the early 1990’s with a friend. Having never been to the beach I had no idea what to expect.
We arrived late into the evening after a long drive from Pennsylvania. Instructed by my girlfriend to pull off the road and get out of the car, my senses were keenly tuned with excitement. I opened my door and the warmth of night hit me in the face; we are not in PA anymore Toto.
A sound filled my ears, an erratic, yet methodical, rhythm that was so foreign I was confused for a moment. Tears welled up in my eyes and goose bumps covered my body making the hair stand up on my neck even though it must have been 85 degrees outside. Occasionally catching a glimpse of something white rolling beyond the edge of the sand I couldn’t talk, I was breathless. Overcome with emotion I stood there consumed.
Two years ago my husband and I decided to live the dream and move to the beach. Once again I found myself standing at the edge of Atlantic Ocean on the Outer Banks in the darkness hand in hand with Michael surrounded by the erratic, yet methodical, rhythm of the ocean.
My senses were on overload as the realization began to set in that this was now our home.
Everyday the tide comes in and the tide rolls out. Everyday the sand shifts as the oceans edge meets the beaches of the Outer Banks. I get to experience the Everyday Magic of the Outer Banks, and all I have to do is step outside and listen; sometimes it is loud and crashing, sometimes it is soft and lapping. It is the one constant that never changes no matter the time the day or even the season.
I still well up with tears as the sound of the Outer Banks fills me with its Everyday Magic.
Well, that is a pretty perfect description of Everyday Magic on the OBX! It is amazing how much raw emotion the Outer Banks has to offer to each and everyone that crosses that bridge and feels the harmony and energy of the natural elements at their finest.
I’d love to hear your story of Outer Banks Everyday Magic too. Please use the form below to share your story with me.

Great to be back at the beach after some holiday travels. It’s a beautiful day. Bright sun, blue skies, 50′s, and a stiff offshore wind out of the west.
There’s a longboard wave out there, but the wind is blowing the tips of the waves.
Fishing is slow. Stripers are in the area, but we are still waiting for a big bite.
Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks, Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, December 20, 2011.
This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.
Only 5 days until Christmas. Wow, time flies. This my last report until after the holiday, so I want to wish you a merry Christmas. I’ll be back soon.
Great day for my last report before the holiday. Great weather and fun surf carrying over from yesterday. Sun, 50′s, light offshore breeze out of the southwest. Looking ahead we could have a few spots of rain, but nothing extensive. Looks like Christmas week will be mostly sunny with temps around 60…perfect OBX Christmas weather.
The surf is fun today. Waist to chest high and real clean with the southwest wind. The offshore wind will stick around through Thursday morning. The swell will fade, but fun surf will stick around…even if it is a bit small. Gotta love surfing on Christmas week…thanks Santa.
OBX fishing has slowed down, but the good news is that the stripers are arriving. Sporadic reports of some great catches. Over the weekend, our friends at Rock Solid Fishing reported a 50 pound striper hauled in at the Oregon Inlet bridge. Definitely some big fish showing up, and we should have a great OBX striper bite real soon.
Have a great holiday. Hope to see you soon. Have fun!
Outer Banks: 11.14.11 - Gorgeous Fall Day in Kill Devil Hills
Thanks for the great bit of magic Josh! Enjoy…
Taking a deep breath can do wonders for your well-being. Just ask any anger-management coach or meditation-loving yogi. Now couple those deep breaths with some amazing scenery, fresh salt air, and warm rays of sun. Enough said?
The Outer Banks is the perfect spot to slow down and practice some deep breathing. Worries melt away and the world takes on a whole new perspective…perhaps we should refer to it as the OBX perspective.
For me, the best thing about the Outer Banks is the weather. The magic is in the simplicity. Weather is something we generally give a mere passing glance…is it cold, is the sun out…enough. But the Outer Banks is different. The weather is dynamic on the Outer Banks. Everyday brings a new wind, new ocean conditions, and a new weather system on the horizon to ponder. It’s amazing how much everyone on the OBX pays close attention to the weather. Next time your in an OBX restaurant, notice if the Weather Channel is on one of the TV’s…my guess is it will be.
Everyday brings a new feel, and with it a bit of magic. One of the most magical Outer Banks moments is when winter loosens its grip and spring takes over. Those days when you step outside and the breeze blowing in from the south is pushing the cold northern winds back up to the Arctic Circle where they belong, and all you need is a pair of flip flops and a pair of board shorts. That’s some Everyday Magic! When you see someone walking around with a hoodie, shorts, and flip flops, you know it’s a local who’s excited that the northern winds and chill are receding.
One of my favorite ways to enjoy the OBX weather is on a bike. I love an early morning bike ride in the spring when the humidity is low and the sun is shining in a crystal-clear blue sky. The gentle caress of the sun puts an instant smile on your face, and whether you’re riding along the beach road or the sound, you’re guaranteed to spot some awesome creatures (if you’re lucky you’ll see a couple otters playing in the sound), beautiful flowers and trees, and smiles on the faces of everyone you encounter! Perfect way to start the day.
When dealing with the hustle and bustle, you’re bound to find hassles, problems, and the occasional hiccup of having to wait in line. However, once you stop to breathe, take a look around, and slow your pace to a stroll, you’ll quickly find the majestic wonder and splendor that puts a strong hold on even the strongest city lover.
Get out and enjoy the Outer Banks magic…it’s all around you!
Please share your Outer Banks Everyday Magic story with us too….we’d love to hear it! You can use the form below to submit it to me.

Outer Banks: 12.15.11 - Perfect OBX December Surf Day
Note: Sorry about the lack of audio. Not sure what happened there. But if you forward to about the 1:50 mark, you can get a look at the beach and waves. Enjoy!
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, December 15, 2011.
This video was shot at the Nags Head Pier at 10 AM.
Amazing December day! Sun and temps at 65 degrees. Temps will dip back to 50′s looking ahead, but looks like great OBX weather all the way through Christmas.
Big news for the day is the surf. Perfect weather, a light southwest breeze, and clean chest high surf. Hit it if your on the OBX. Tomorrow looks like more of the same, but the wind will be stronger and the swell will fade through the day. Water temps at 52 degrees.
OBX fishing is slow, but stripers are on the way; so we should have a great striper bite soon.
