Salty foodART Exhibition is a collaborative between Outer Banks Epicurean, a local culinary business, and Dare County Arts Council. The event will be held at Dare County Arts Council Gallery in Manteo and Amy Huggins, owner of Outer Banks Epicurean, will curate the show. There is no fee to attend the exhibit, which will be on display through the month of March.

The inspiration for this exhibit is from Dare County Restaurant Association’s annual Taste of the Beach Weekend. Salty foodART Exhibition will feature artwork inspired by food, eating and all things culinary.  Invitations were extended to local artists to exhibit their own culinary art. Pottery, Glass, Textiles, Photographs, Paintings, Metal, Wood, New Media and more will be represented. These highly accredited and internationally collected artists who will be exhibited all live on the Outer Banks.

The groups will be hosting two receptions introducing the Salty artists.  The public is invited to both events.

• DCAC hosts the First Friday Opening Reception on March 5, 6-8 pm. This is always a lively gathering which includes light fare, libations and often live music.
• Thursday, March 11, Outer Banks Epicurean hosts Amuse Bouche: A Collector’s Reception from 6 – 8pm.  It is presented for serious art collectors and art buyers who are interested in purchasing original artwork.

Both receptions will be held at the DCAC Gallery, located at 104 Sir Walter Raleigh Street in Downtown Manteo.

In support of the local culinary arts, a Salty themed collection jar for the Dare County Arts Council’s Scholarship Fund, which now includes the culinary arts, will be on display throughout the exhibition.

Bruce Roberts discovered his fascination for photography at a young age.  When he was a teenager, he set up a homemade darkroom in the basement of his family’s home to develop photos that he had taken.  He then went on to earn a degree from NYU and spend two years in the Air Force.  After serving in the Air Force, Roberts made his way to North Carolina where he began his professional photography career taking pictures that were published in the Hamlet News Messenger, and his work then went on to be published in national publications, as well as the magazine “Our State.”  Roberts has received a variety of accolades, including two time Southern Photographer of the Year, and he is often associated as the person who pioneered the use of 35 millimeter cameras in photojournalism.

To honor his great work, a photojournalism exhibit will open on March 5th at the Outer Banks History Center.  This exhibit will include varied aspects of Roberts’ work, from black and white to color, from the Blue Ridge to the Outer Banks.

2010 Land of Beginnings Festival

The Land of Beginnings Festival is an annual celebration of Outer Banks originals which defines who the OBX is as a community. Events planned at various sites throughout the week include a long list of exciting cultural, educational and entertainment activities.  Participating sponsors include both nonprofits and businesses that subscribe to promoting the future of the Outer Banks by preserving its past.

The dates for the 2010 Land of Beginnings Festival are set for April 9-17. Festival events are geared toward diverse interests and ages and will be located throughout the Outer Banks from Kitty Hawk to Hatteras.

Several Festival events are already planned, the committee welcomes additional events that coordinate within the schedule. Events already planned by the Festival Committee include some of the following:

• Children’s Faire – April 9, daytime,

• Hatteras Storytelling – April 10, evening,

• Living Legend Community Luncheon – April 12, daytime,

• Storytelling – Roanoke Island Festival Park, April 13, evening,

• Storytelling – Black Pelican Restaurant, April 15, evening,

• and a Black-Tie Gala – April 17, evening.

Whalehead Club

Three new events were just added to the Whalehead Club in Corolla, NC

Corolla Pedal-Foot-Paddle
April 7 – Wednesday from 8 am to 1 pm

Join us for a multi-athletic event beginning in Currituck Heritage Park.  The “Pedal-Foot-Paddle” starts with a scenic cycle through Corolla followed by a run on the beach at low-tide, wrapping up with a kayak paddle on the Currituck Sound. 

For the more leisurely-minded enjoy the fun event, “Land and Light”- climb the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, then stroll through the park ending at the front porch of the historic Whalehead Club.  Contestants may participate individually or as a team.  Entry fee includes registration reception on Tuesday evening, and award celebration – including best costume – on race day.

Enjoy this outdoor art and gift show on the banks of the Currituck Sound.  This festival features the talents of artists showcasing a variety of media and quality gifts.  Plus musical entertainment, local food concessions, art auction, and children’s activities!  Admission is free! $5 parking donation requested.

Currituck Heritage Day
October 3 – Sunday from 12 pm to 4 pm

You are invited to a huge lawn party on the grounds of the Whalehead Club to experience the best of Currituck County’s cultural heritage with food and fun for all.  Show off your talents on the main stage in “Currituck Idol!” Enjoy the award-winning CCHS Marching Knights, antique cars, kite flying demos, children’s activities, and local arts & crafts booths – call to reserve your booth space now! 

This is a family friendly event. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

OB Can – Call for Artists

OB Can Nags Head is a community arts project that addressed the problem of littering on Nags Head’s beaches.

Artists are invited to apply to paint a new trash can, which will grace the beaches throughout Nags Head.

The Town is working with the Dare County Arts Council on this project.

Who Can Apply?Any artist residing in Dare County.

Selection Process

Artists need to fill out an application (link is below) and return it, along with 5 digital images of their work to the Town of Nags Head or the Dare County Arts Council.

Work samples must be in digital form on a CD, with the artist’s name and contact information printed on the disc.

The application materials will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and artists will be notified of their acceptance.

May 8 – Before being placed on the beach, trash cans will be unveiled at a Garbage Gala hosted by the Dare County Arts Council at Pamlico Jacks. 

Design Criteria

We want variety! You are encouraged to show off your own personal style.

Be original! No reproductions of other pieces of artwork.

No 3D elements! Please limit this project to 2D materials. Remember, these will be functional trash cans.

The theme is open to your interpretation. Keep in mind, however, that these will be placed on public beaches, so create accordingly.

Outer Banks Sunrise

Some dreams take a bit of time (and a bit of doing) to bring into being, but when they finally appear they make all the waiting worthwhile. Squam by the sea is just such a dream.

It first began several years ago as a wishful, blue moon, pie in the sky conversation between Elizabeth and Michelle. It rooted itself on the beach in Nags Head last June when Elizabeth journeyed to the seaside town Michelle calls home. Then, as dreams tend to do, it took a strong hold on both their hearts over the Fall. Next, as destiny would have it, they joined their vision with one that McCabe had long held for a bewitching beach gathering. Jen and Sarah jumped in and lo and behold, we had yoga, mixed media, writing and mermaid magic all weaving together in one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast: North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

More specifically, we will be convening on the wide, white, immensely walkable beaches of Nags Head where pelicans swoop by in artful formation and the water is often warmed by the gulf stream. Nags Head is part of a narrow strip of coastal barrier islands that reach farther into the Atlantic Ocean than any other place on the East Coast, so when you are standing on the beach, you are truly immersed in the rhythmic, healing waves and salt spray of the sea.

We will be staying in charming cottages situated directly on the beach.

• For early risers there are sunrise beach walks, bike rides, surfing, swimming or even sun salutations to indulge in.
• Once everyone has gathered and enjoyed a lovely breakfast, we will break out into our classes that last until lunch.
• The afternoon has more class time…
• Followed by dinner and then…
• Evening gatherings which may include bonfires and story telling on the beach or hanging out in the main house for visiting, sharing, knitting or games (and given our status as professional dreamers, we have a few magical surprises awaiting you, too).

If there were a way to sum up what these four days in beach heaven will be like, it might be described as taking a great big breath, or exhaling a deep sigh of relief. There will be a release of tension, stress and busy minds and a gentle escape into the true, calm, intuitive center of ourselves.

In fact, he is a front man himself.   In the 80s, Tim lead a number of trios.  Afterwards, he did spend a lot of time touring with Dave Matthews. Now, he is a front man again, heading a group called TR3. 

In addition to Reynolds, TR3 consists of bass player Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier (also a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty).

“Doing the sideman gig, that kind of came later,” Reynolds said during a recent phone interview with the Vale Daily News. “I started as the front man, and it’s more of an expression to be a front man. I’ve always been compelled to write music. As much as I like to play the guitar, to me the real deal is writing music.” 

The group played in Vail last week and has been touring, but their home base is the Outer Banks.  Keep an eye on the music schedule for some of the local clubs, and you may be lucky enough to see TR3 in action.
