Outer Banks Art Exhibit

Local Outer Banks artists Ben Morris and Ben Miller are combining their efforts to display some recent works on at the Dare County Arts Council Gallery in downtown Manteo.

The exhibit opens on the “First Friday” of September, including an opening reception – September 3, 6-8 pm.

The vibrant colors and seaside flare in their works of art are definitely worth a look.

Outer Banks Children @ Play Museum

The “Children at Play” kids museum opened yesterday on the Outer Banks – in Kitty Hawk, (beside Papa John’s pizza) at Milepost 4.5.

The museum features interactive exhibits where children can learn about the bigger world around them through play!

Kids and parents can learn about fishing, and measuring their catch or lighthouses and lifesaving.  These are just some of the exciting opportunities awaiting families on the OBX!

The Outer Banks is a natural wonderland; a Nationally recognized and persevered seashore, the tallest sand dune on the east coast, mile upon mile of undisturbed beaches, wild horses, sunrises and sunsets over vast bodies of water, and the list goes on.  One of the most mesmerizing natural elements along the Outer Banks is weather patterns that change on a daily, if not hourly, basis and the resulting colorful displays in the skies.

As a result of this amazing mix of natural elements the OBX is a favorite muse for photographers far and wide, including many that call the Outer Banks home.

From August 1^st through August 30^th, the art gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park is featuring an amazing exhibit of weather and sky photographs from three great Outer Banks photographers.

Bach’s uniquely typical music since 1965,” said Eddie Cooke, president of the Outer Banks Forum for the Lively Arts. “The four-time Grammy award winner’s show has been called ‘the greatest comedy-in-music act before the public today’. “

In addition to his annual concerts in New York City, he has appeared with over 50 orchestras, ranging from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the London Sym-phony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic to the New York Pick-Up Ensemble; and his self-contained show The Intimate P.D.Q. Bach (featuring the Semi-Pro Musica Antiqua) has played cities and campuses from Maine to California.

P.D.Q. Bach – The Jekyll and Hyde Tour’s performance is sponsored by Albemarle Eye Center, Elizabeth R and Dare County Arts Council.

The Outer Banks Forum for the Performing Arts is a non-profit organization that brings an annual series of seven outstanding diverse concerts to the area and provides opportunities for youth to participate in the arts. All of the performances are partially underwritten by community businesses.

Salty - A foodART Exhibition

Salty foodART Exhibition is a collaborative between Outer Banks Epicurean, a local culinary business, and Dare County Arts Council. The event will be held at Dare County Arts Council Gallery in Manteo and Amy Huggins, owner of Outer Banks Epicurean, will curate the show. There is no fee to attend the exhibit, which will be on display through the month of March.

The inspiration for this exhibit is from Dare County Restaurant Association’s annual Taste of the Beach Weekend. Salty foodART Exhibition will feature artwork inspired by food, eating and all things culinary.  Invitations were extended to local artists to exhibit their own culinary art. Pottery, Glass, Textiles, Photographs, Paintings, Metal, Wood, New Media and more will be represented. These highly accredited and internationally collected artists who will be exhibited all live on the Outer Banks.

The groups will be hosting two receptions introducing the Salty artists.  The public is invited to both events.

• DCAC hosts the First Friday Opening Reception on March 5, 6-8 pm. This is always a lively gathering which includes light fare, libations and often live music.
• Thursday, March 11, Outer Banks Epicurean hosts Amuse Bouche: A Collector’s Reception from 6 – 8pm.  It is presented for serious art collectors and art buyers who are interested in purchasing original artwork.

Both receptions will be held at the DCAC Gallery, located at 104 Sir Walter Raleigh Street in Downtown Manteo.

In support of the local culinary arts, a Salty themed collection jar for the Dare County Arts Council’s Scholarship Fund, which now includes the culinary arts, will be on display throughout the exhibition.

Bruce Roberts discovered his fascination for photography at a young age.  When he was a teenager, he set up a homemade darkroom in the basement of his family’s home to develop photos that he had taken.  He then went on to earn a degree from NYU and spend two years in the Air Force.  After serving in the Air Force, Roberts made his way to North Carolina where he began his professional photography career taking pictures that were published in the Hamlet News Messenger, and his work then went on to be published in national publications, as well as the magazine “Our State.”  Roberts has received a variety of accolades, including two time Southern Photographer of the Year, and he is often associated as the person who pioneered the use of 35 millimeter cameras in photojournalism.

To honor his great work, a photojournalism exhibit will open on March 5th at the Outer Banks History Center.  This exhibit will include varied aspects of Roberts’ work, from black and white to color, from the Blue Ridge to the Outer Banks.
