Filming for a new sci-fi movie began at Jockey’s Ridge State Park on October 8, 2009.

Obsidian Collective, a media production start-up company began shooting its first film. The company was founded with director Ben Carland and some other friends from the town of Hendersonville.  The company’s first film will be titled “Sol.”  It will be a Sci-fi drama that will have plenty of suspense in the mix.  Here’s a quick synopsis o f plot…

 When five young men become stranded on a desolate planet with meager resources, the potential for disaster seems unavoidable — to find out their fate, you’ll have to wait until the film hits the theaters.

 Carland is very optimistic about working on the Outer Banks. “Our hope is that having the blog will pull people in throughout the entire process and get them interested in it,” Huffman says. “You can watch this feature film unfold — and because we’re a hometown operation — you might have some relation to the people in it.” Carland will be keeping a blog updated during the time that they will be filming on the Outer Banks.  You can keep up with the project and watch the film as it unfolds at the “Sol” Development Blog.

Dare County Arts Council and the Southern Arts Federation present the 3rd Annual Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival.

The Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival spotlights recent short films by filmmakers living and working in the Southeastern United States. The Film Festival will tour from September 2009—May 2010 as a self-contained, three-hour event that may be enjoyed in a single afternoon or evening. These twelve short films feature something for everyone, ranging from animation, to documentary, to experimental, to fiction. Bring a friend and enjoy an evening out! There will be southern foods to sample, live bluegrass music, and a cash bar. And don’t miss out on the gift packages that will be raffled at intermission!

A joint art show opened on October 3 at Roanoke island’s Festival Park and will run through October 28. The show features Hatteras Island artist Daniel Pullen and Stephanie Kiker. 

The exhibit will have an Outer Banks appeal that will attract folks that enjoy all aspects of our barrier islands; waves, wildlife, and the OBX vibe.  Mediums vary from photography, to drawings, and paintings. 

The show is open from 10/3 – 10/28, and the gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is free and open to the public.

Pullen has lived on Hatteras Island for more than 30 years. He is a well-versed, and eclectic artist that is able to bring a very creative style to his photography and painting. His surf photography captures the essesence of the Outer Banks surf experience from the beach and the water, and he uses a variety of unique surfaces for his bold surf paintings.

Kiker graduated from the School of Design at North Carolina State University focusing on graphic and fine arts.  She works in pastel to create realistic images of the flora and fauna on Hatteras Island where she has been living for more than two decades. Kiker has developed what she calls an aboriginal style using colored pencils to express stylized nature.

The Dare County Arts Council (DCAC) and many dedicated volunteers are hard at work on this year’s Artrageous Art Extravaganza (AAE). This year marks our 20th anniversary of the AAE, and the theme for 2009 is “Honey, we’re 20!”

Artrageous is an annual community-wide celebration of the arts, as well as DCAC’s most important fundraiser of the year, with proceeds benefiting art education programming in ALL Dare County Schools, cultural arts programs in Dare County, and the Artrageous Youth Scholarship fund.

Artrageous begins on Saturday, October 3rd, with a fun filled day of live music, children’s activities, a live art “Quick Draw”, artists’ show and sell, live art demonstrations, good food and good times for all ages.

Sunday evening, October 4th join us at the Hilton Garden Inn for the treasured Artrageous Art Auction.  Enjoy a cocktail party with live music, great food and both silent and live auctions of art donated by local artists.

A free watercolor exhibit is on display at the Roanoke Island Festival Park throughout July.

The Browning family has long roots on the Outer Banks.  Dixie Browning was raised on Hatteras Island in the 30’s and 40’s.  She describes her paintings as places in which to wander rather than see.  She is the co-founder of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.  Dixie also spends some of her time writing romance and mystery novels.  Her Daughter-in-law, Linda, has also taken up the art of painting and selected watercolor as her medium of choice.
