There are two great races coming up to kick off the spring season in April; The Flying Pirate Half Marathon and the First Flight 5K.

Transportation
Shuttle buses to the Start will be provided for race participants. Shuttles will also be available from the finish line back to shuttle parking areas. Shuttle schedule will be posted on the website closer to race day.

The Half Marathon will be timed by utilizing the Chronotrack Timing System.

OBSE awards the toop three male and female finishers for all 5K, 8K, marathon and half marathon races. For the Flying Pirate Half Marathon, the 10-14 age group awards will be limited to runners age 12-14 years old.Age Groups: 10-14; 15-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74, 75+

Registrants under 18:

Outer Banks Sporting Events Organizing Committee has set minimum age limits for participants under the age of 18:

10 yrs. old = 8K
12 yrs. old = ½ marathon
16 yrs. old = marathon

The 27th  Nags Head Woods 5k will be held this Saturday at 8 am.   This Race supports a wide variety of great causes! The race’s Website provided the following information about the event: 

This unique race is a wonderful opportunity to Have Fun While Doing Good! Celebrate Mom and spend a Spring weekend on the exciting Outer Banks of North Carolina. Enjoy great beaches, nature and history. And while here, run through The Nature Conservancy’s Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, one of the few maritime forests remaining in The USA. The race starts at 8 AM on Saturday, May 8th. It is an out-and-back course that covers gently rolling terrain on hard-packed dirt/gravel/sand in the woods. North Banks Rotary Club hosts the race – all net proceeds go to support local scholarships and charities, and disabled veterans.

After race party will be held at the Ramada Inn at 12:30 PM at the. Entry to the party is complimentary for 5K runners. Cost for all others age 6 and above is $10.

Surfside Scute 5K and Tiny Turtle Kids Fun Run to be held May 22, 2010 in Corolla to support Corolla Ocean Rescue.

This family-friendly run or walk finishes in Monteray Plaza with prizes, food, live music and lots of fun!

The race begins at 8:00 a.m. on a Saturday, and would be a great way for tourists to begin their vacations, or as the perfect ending to a fun-filled week.

Proceeds go to Corolla Ocean Rescue and help fund the OBX public ocean safety programs such as the S.E.A.L. program and Junior Lifeguards.

27th annual Nags Head Woods 5K

2010 Nags Head Woods 5k5K starts at 8 AM and fun run at 9 AM. Run in one of the few remaining U.S. maritime forests, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The race terrain is gently rolling on hard-packed dirt/gravel/sand, in tree-shaded woods. Run or walk. Beach party and buffet 12:30 to 3 p.m. Celebrate mom at the beach this Mother’s Day. Hosted by North Banks Rotary Club.

 5K Fees:  Outer Banks Running Club members – $30. Military/USCG & dependents who are Outer Banks Running Club members – $28. Military/USCG & dependents who are not Outer Banks Running Club members – $30. Military includes active duty/guard/reserve. All others – $32. After April 20 add $5 to registration fee. Includes loaded goody bag, famous cool T-shirt, age group medals. Numerous prize drawings, post-race OBX beach party with buffet and entertainment.

Fun Run Fee:  $10 for non-competitive run or walk, loaded goody bag, famous cool T-shirt, eligibility for prize drawings, finisher awards. Fun runners and guests can buy tickets to the beach party and buffet for $10.

Beach party and buffet fee:  $10 for fun runner, participant’s guests and all others. 5K entrants admitted free. Age 5 and under free.

Registration:  Entry only online at www.active.com. Race closes May 6 or at 550 entrants, whichever occurs first. No paper registration or race day registration. This is a great race to run with friends — encourage them to sign up.

Overall & Age Group Awards:  Trophies to the top three overall males and females. Overall winners are not eligible for age-group awards. Age group medals for top three in 6-12, 13-15, 16-19 then five-year groups up to 75+. Trophies to the fastest military male and female. Special award on this Mothers Day weekend to the Fastest Mom on the Beach.

Other Event Details:  Non-refundable charity event. Race is rain or shine but would be canceled in the event of thunder and lightning. Shoes mandatory. Water supplied at 5K start and finish. Slower runners, walkers and children must start at the back of the corral. This is mostly an out and back course. No bandits, bikes, earphones, strollers or pets in the 5K or fun run.

Race Beneficiaries:  Race put on by North Banks Rotary Club and Outer Banks Kiwanis Club volunteers. Net proceeds will be distributed to Community Care Clinic of Dare County, Interfaith Community Outreach, North Banks Rotary Scholarship Fund, Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship Program, The Nature Conservancy, and Disabled Veterans charities.

Course Records:  Course records as of 2004: Jason Page of Carrboro, 16:46 in 2005; Megan Holden of South Beach, NY, 18:37 in 2006. The course is not certified but is GPS-measured.

Halloween on the Outer Banks – 2009 Activities

It’s that time of year again.  Here are some OBX Halloween happenings:

Haunted Albemarle
Past local residents of Elizabeth City, aka Jr. Docents as costumed interpreters, tell their stories. Hear from Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, a Civil War soldier, an Albemarle suffragette, Nell Cropsy, a past North Carolina governor, and other notorious Albemarle residents. Take a map and explore the cemetery on your own afterwards. For more information please call 252-335-1453.

Trick or Treat Under The Sea
North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Ghosts and strange aquatic creatures will greet children as they enjoy this “spooktacular” event. Hosting the event is Count Sharkula who always scares up lots of ghoulish fun. Crazy costume contests, creepy crafts, spine-tingling scream contests and yummy munchies are just a few of the things to howl about. Tickets are limited. Outer Banks Spooktacular 5k
The Outer Banks Running Club in training and planning a marathon tune-up 5K race, which will couple as a Halloween race, to be held within the Martin’s Point neighborhood on Oct. 25th. There will be a children’s costume fun run!

Haunted Corolla Village
October 30th from 6:30pm – 9:00pm. Come join us in Currituck Heritage Park for a ghoulishly good time. Jump on board the Haunted Hayride through Historic Corolla Village to hear ghostly stories of yesteryear. And then if you dare, walk the spooky park grounds, and be prepared to be scared. $6.00 per person. Meet at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education for Programs presented in the lobby & auditorium! Seasonal snacks available from local vendors! Enter our Carved Pumpkin Contest.
