2012 Outer Banks Roller Derby Tournament: Derby Spills in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks Roller Derby

Outer Banks Roller Derby

Last year, around this time, I announced the start of the OBX roller derby league. A proud moment for all lovers of the elegant (that’s sarcasm ;) ) sport. Unfortunately, I hadn’t heard much since. I saw some ladies rolling around at the KDH park, but never heard of any games. Until today…

I just got word that a gnarly roller derby tournament is planned for early this spring; dubbed “Derby Spills in Kill Devil Hills.”  Great name, ladies.

Here are some details…
Derby Spills in Kill Devil Hills is an invitational roller derby tournament created to bring the leagues of North Carolina and Virginia together for a weekend of AWESOME derby bouts and education in the Outer Banks.

Tournament bouts will be played on Friday and Saturday with an optional training camp on Sunday.  The training camp is open to all skaters, even those not participating in the tournament.

The derby tourney will be the evening of Friday, April 27 and all day Saturday, April 28. It will be at Aviation Park in Kill Devil Hills (near high school, skate park, etc.) and tickets will be on sale soon at local businesses.

We’ll share more details as they are available.

The OBX derby ladies practice Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6-7:30 at Aviation Park across from First Flight High School - come out anytime and they’ll give you the low down on derby!

Outer Banks - 4.27.11 - Thunder Boomer at Avalon Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, April 27, 2011.

This video was shot at Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 8:30 AM.

It’s warm…almost 80 degrees at 8:30 AM! But, we’re starting the day off with some overcast skies and thunder at Avalon Pier. The good news is the clouds won’t say long and the sun will be shining soon. This great weather will carry through tomorrow and into the weekend. Sun, 70′s, and an occasional thunder storm…sure is starting to feel like summer!

Not much surf today. There is some southeast swell coming through at about waist high, but it’s not too clean with the southwest wind blowing at about 10 mph. The good news is that this swell should build to head high tomorrow, and the wind should switch to west on Friday morning, so we could have some clean head high waves on Friday…not to mention upper 70′s and sun! The waves could last through Saturday if the wind cooperates.

OBX fishing is going strong. Offshore is still reporting tuna (blue, black, and yellow fin), some wahoo, and some dolphin. Getting very consistent reports from the piers with a variety of fish – blow toads, sea mullet, croaker, some spot and speckled trout starting to show up. The little bridge is Manteo is reporting some good action, and the Sound has some fish showing up. Still waiting for some consistent reports from the surf, but they’ll be here soon as the water warms…up to 55 degrees now.

Enjoy!

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, April 22, 2011.

Happy Earth Day! Today is the last day we’ll be raising money for the Outer Banks Surfrider Foundation with our Facebook promotion. Each new fan = $1. If you’re on Facebook, please look us up at www.Facebook.com/SeasideVacationsOBX. We’ve raised over $500 so far, and we’d love to add $1 for you!

It’s a pretty spring day. It actually feels chilly compared to the 80 degree temps from earlier in the week, but temps comfortable, and seasonable, in the 60′s today. The “chill” will be gone tomorrow and the great weather will stick with us through the weekend and into next week. In the 70′s tomorrow and hitting 80 on Sunday!

No surf today, but we could have a great longboard wave on Sunday. We should have swell in the waist high range, and the wind should be out of the southwest at 10 mph all day Sunday….plus 80 degree temps! Great day to be at the beach…and in the water.

The Outer Banks fishing is going strong. Offshore has tuna (blue, black, & yellow fin), some dolphin, and a few reports of billfiish! Inshore is going strong as well. There are a variety of fish in the area, and we have consistent reports of catches from all the piers; croaker, blow toad, flounder, blue fish, sea mullet. Unfortunately, no consistent reports out of the surf, but the water is warming up and the fish are here, so it’s only a matter of time.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 4.21.11 - Pretty Day at Kitty Hawk Pier

Pretty spring day. The sun is shining, temps in the 60′s, gentle breeze out of the north. There’s a small bump, but not much surf today. The spring fish are biting…about 10 guys casting their line on the pier this morning.

Outer Banks - 4.20.11 - Jennette's Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

This video was shot in South Nags Head at the new Jennette’s Pier at 9:00 AM.

We had a request on Facebook to get some pictures and video of the new Jennette’s Pier, so it seemed like a great opportunity for a beach report. Jennette’s Pier will be opening May 21 after about a two year construction period. The Pier looks amazing, and will have a lot of great exhibits and activities in conjunction with the NC Aquarium. Definitely worth a visit once it’s open.

It’s a great spring day. Almost feels like summer! It’s starting off a bit overcast, but we can’t really complain with temps in the low 80′s today! Temps will cool to the 60′s tomorrow and Friday, but the nice weather will stick with us, and the temps will warm back to the 70′s for the weekend.

There is a warm wind out of the Southwest at about 15 mph, and it’s cleaning up the waist high waves wrapping around the Pier this morning. Fun longboard wave throughout the day.

The OBX fishing is going strong. Offshore is active with blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and king mackerel. The Piers and the Little Bridge in Manteo are reporting all sorts of spring fish showing up; sea mullet, blow toads, croakers, speckled trout, flounder.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 4.18.11 - Spring in Full Swing

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, April 18, 2011.

This video was shot at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

Spring is in full swing! It was a beautiful weekend on the OBX, and the great spring weather will continue this week.

We had some wild thunderstorms on Saturday night, and a number of tornadoes touched down in North Carolina; so our hearts go out to anyone that was affected by the storms. The OBX fared pretty well. Duck had some damage, but other than that things are good.

Mother Nature made up for a crazy Saturday night with some beautiful weather yesterday with temps in the lower 70′s, chest high surf, and lots of fishing! The great weather continues today and throughout this week. Temps in the upper 70′s today. The sun is shining, and the wind is light out of the west.

The swell from yesterday is leftover this morning, and there is a glassy waist high wave coming through. A good longboard wave should last for most of the day.

The beaches are very active. It’s a busy week with Bike Week and spring break this week. A lot of people out and about, and a lot of excited energy for spring.

The OBX fishing is going strong. The offshore fishing continues with yellow fin, blue fin, and black fin tuna, some mahi-mahi, and a few reports that billfish are showing up!

The piers are all open, and giving consistent reports. Spring fish are here. Blow toads, croaker, blue fish, sea mullet, some rock and puppy drum in the Sound.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 4.15.11 – Soundside

Outer Banks - 4.15.11 - Pretty Spring Day

Outer Banks - 4.15.11 - Pretty Spring Day

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing report for Friday, April 15, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at my favorite secret spot on the Sound. I’m luckly enough to hang out with my rugrat, Finn, today, and we won’t get out to the beach until this afternoon, so I figured I’d do a report from the Sound this morning.

It’s been a great spring week with sun and warm temps in the 60′s to low 70′s, and this great weather continues today, through the weekend, and into next week. It’s beautiful today with sun and no clouds, mid 60′s, and a 10 mph wind out of the north. The 10 day forecast looks great with a few chances of thunderstorms, but mostly sun and warm temps.

The surf is building through tomorrow, and it should reach the shoulder high range. The wind won’t match up until Sunday, but the swell should still be in the chest high range, and the wind looks like it will be ideal for clean surf all day Sunday and into Monday morning. The swell will fade to waist high on Monday. Looks like a good OBX weekend for weather and surf.

Outer Banks - 4.15.11 Surf Report

Outer Banks - 4.15.11 Surf Report

The OBX fishing is going strong. The water temps have warmed to 55 degress, and the fish are starting to show up. Blow toads are being hauled in at the Avalon Pier, and they are usually the first fish of the spring followed closely by sea mullet. There are also blue fish in the area, and some catches in the Sound of puppy drum and rock fish. Offshore fishing is still strong with blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna and mahi-mahi.

Spring is here…and summer is close behind. Great time to be on the Outer Banks. Hope to see you soon.

Have fun!

Outer Banks - 4.13.11 - Spring Beauty in KH

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.

Another great spring day. Sun, temps in the upper 60′s, and a nice offshore wind out of the southwest at 10 – 15 mph. This weather will stick with us through the weekend – sun and temps in the 60′s.

The offshore wind is cleaning up the remaining swell for some fun longboard waves. The surf will be fading throughout the day from waist to knee. Definitely a pretty day to be in the water. Although we need the water to warm a bit more so we can get out of our winter suits. Water temps are stuck around 50 degrees right now, but the warm days and warm west winds should continue to bring the temps up.

Speaking of warmer water, as the water warms, the fishing will heat up too, and we are starting to see signs of some great OBX fishing. The offshore fishing is going strong with blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna, and some dolphin (mahi mahi) mixed in. We are starting to get reports of catches out of the surf, but more so on the southern beaches because the water temps are already picking up down there. However, the piers are open and we are getting report of decent catches off the piers, and the Sound action is starting to pick up as well. Blue fish, sea mullet, rock, puppy drum are all in the area.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 4.11.11 - Leftover Waves in Kitty Hawk

Outer Banks - 4.11.11 - Leftover Waves in Kitty Hawk

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, April 11, 2011.

This video was shot in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM at the “Neaptide.”

I’m not trying to jinx us, but it sure does feel like Spring is here to stay. I’m sure there will be a chilly day here and there, but it feels like warm spring weather is the new norm. Glad to have you here spring…please stay a while.

Great start to the week today with temps in the mid 70′s. There are some lingering clouds, so it’s overcast…but it’s in the 70′s! We really can’t complain. The warm weather will be with us throughout the week. Temps will stay in the 60′s and despite a rain shower here and there, the sun will be out most of the week.

We have some swell leftover from the weekend this morning, and a offshore southwest wind is cleaning it up as it fades. Fun stomach high wave this morning. The swell will build tomorrow afternoon, and it looks like there could be some clean chest high surf late afternoon/early evening tomorrow. The swell will fade quickly on Wednesday, but Wednesday morning could still be fun as it fades.

The OBX fishing is heating up. The offshore fishing is going strong with reports of blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna, and some reports of dolphin. We are also starting to get reports inshore of blue fish, sea mullets, and croakers. As the water temps continue to rise, the fishing will continue to increase.

Enjoy!
