Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 12.17.10
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, December 17, 2010.
This video was shot at 9:00 AM at the Hayman St. Beach access, just north of the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills.
Feels almost tropical today compared to the past few days. Temps are in the 40′s, and the wind has died down. Winds are out of the north today at about 10 – 15 mph.
The day is starting off with overcast skies, but the clouds are clearing off this afternoon to let some much needed sun shine through. The next week looks like decent weather. Temps in the 40′s, some chance of rain here and there, but sunny for the most part.
Unfortunately, no surf to report, but that could change next week. It looks like a nor’easter to slide into the area early next week and hang off the coast pushing some giant swell our way. The forecasts are calling for head high to double-over head waves by Wednesday. It will be messy, but hopefully we’ll see some clean waves on the other side of the weather system…possibly a Christmas present of surf?!
Not much fishing to report either. Still hearing reports that the rockfish are in Crolla, but I haven’t heard of any big runs just yet. They should be slowly moving their way south as the water temps continue to cool. Water is about 50 degrees now.
8 days until Christmas.
Enjoy!
Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 12.3.10 ( Plus Great Surf from Wednesday)
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, December 3, 2010…plus some bonus footage of great OBX surf from Wednesday afternoon.
This video was shot at 9:15 AM at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills.
It’s a chilly day. Quite a difference from Wednesday’s report. Wednesday we came pretty close to hitting the 70 degree mark (in December!), but today we’ll be lucky if we get out of the 40′s. And it should stay like this for the next few days; through the weekend and into the start of next week.
Unfortunately, there’s not much to report for OBX fishing. A few reports of trout, rockfish, and drum, but not much. Hopefully the rock will be here in full force soon.
The silver lining on an otherwise cloudy and chilly day is that the swell is sticking around. Wednesday afternoon was pretty ideal for surf. Straight off-shore winds cleaning up the head high sets coming through. A few pictures and video clips are at the end of the this video. And that swell is still with us.
Unfortunately, there is a stiff wind out of the NW today, so the surf isn’t clean right now, but there should be a good window of opportunity for clean waist to chest waves tomorrow afternoon. Probably starting at about 12 or 1 PM. It will be chilly, so getting in and out of the wetsuit could be tough, but it could be worth it for clean waist high waves.
Enjoy!
Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 11.29.10
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, November 29, 2010.
This video was shot just south of the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at about 9:00AM.
Great start to the week. Bright sun, not a cloud in the sky, temps in the upper 50′s, and a light east wind. The wind is pretty much straight off the ocean onshore. Very refreshing wind sending the sweet smell of salt air to the beach.
Tomorrow and Wednesday should be in the upper 60′s, maybe even hitting 70 degrees to start the month of December.
Today is probably the best bet for fishing for the next few days. The light wind is cleaning up the water nicely. The winds will pick up tomorrow, and as the water gets choppy and the dirt moves around, the fishing tends to slow down.
There are trout, stripers, and few drum. We’re still waiting for the big drum and rock fish to show up. The off shore fishing is doing well with tuna.
Unfortunately, there is no surf today. The forecast is calling for swell in the range of 5 – 6 feet towards the end of the week, and the winds should switch to the south/southwest at the same time. Hopefully we’ll see decent surf Thursday and/or Friday.
Enjoy!
Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 10.22.10
Good afternoon. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, October 22.
This video was shot at Avalon Pier this afternoon at about 1:15PM.
Fall is definitely settling in. The summer “feel” is gone, but it’s nice to see the change of seasons.
It’s a gorgeous fall day on the OBX. Bright sun, blue skies, and temps in the mid 60′s. This weather should stick around for a few days; mid 60′s to mid 70′s and bright sun.
Unfortunately, there is no surf to report, and judging by the extended forecast, it doesn’t look like we’ll get any OBX surf for the next week or so. We are in the waiting period for the annual Battle of the Banks surf contest, so hopefully we get a big day soon.
However, the OBX fishing is great right now. Fall is the peak fishing season on the Outer Banks. The other day I posted a video of some trout fishing at Kitty Hawk Pier, and today we have a stiff wind out of the North at about 10 mph that is bringing a whole bunch of Spot into the area.
The beach is empty, but the pier is full of people hauling in Spot.
Enjoy.
