Outer Banks’ Tortugas’ Lie Voted North Carolina’s Best Seafood

Coastal Living Magazine recently released their annual guide, outlining the best eats across the country. Since the Outer Banks is known for their delicious fresh seafood, it was no surprise to learn that Tortugas’ Lie of Nags Head was voted best seafood in North Carolina.

From grilled yellowfin tuna, to spicy creole crawdads, Tortugas’ Lie has a large menu and offers daily specials including a Wednesday night Sushi menu. Aside from the food the restaurant offers a great island atmposhere including an outdoor volleyball net out back, a great staff, and awesome drinks.

It is definitely a must stop on your next Outer Banks Vacation, great seafood and perfect for the whole family. Make sure you check their website when you get here for their daily specials and menu! You can even order takeout online!

Outer Banks Fishing – The Best in the United States?!

Outer Banks Record Blue Marlin

Outer Banks Record Blue Marlin

We’ve been jazzed about the awesome OBX fishing going on this winter. I ramble about it on my daily fishing reports and I mentioned the two state records for rock fish already set in 2011 in a previous post. It’s been a great winter for OBX fishing.

But we expect Outer Banks fishing to be good. It’s like expecting snow in the mountains. It’s what we do.

Despite our expectations, it’s always great to hear how great the OBX fishing is from a trusted, outside source. Last year, Marlin Magazine named the OBX the number one spot in the WORLD for marlin fishing. Very cool. But that’s a pretty specialized game.  How about OBX fishing as a whole? Does the Outer Banks have the best fishing in the United States?

The editor-at-large for Salt Water Sportsman, George Poveromo, seems to think so. (I think it’s safe to say he knows a bit about salt water fishing.) The Virginia Pilot ran an article a few weeks ago that discussed Poveromo’s recent trip to VA Beach for a national seminar, and while there, he noted “the Virginia Beach and nearby Outer Banks area’s abundance of variety as one reason he thinks the mid-Atlantic could be the best. The size that some species grow to is a bonus.”

The article finishes up by quoting Poveromo:  ”I’d have to say that the fishing you guys have spanks the rest of the country in a lot of ways.”

So I guess our expectations are well founded. It will snow in Colorado, and we’ll catch some big fish on the OBX.  Thanks for confirming our beliefs Mr. Poveromo.

Outer Banks Named #1 in List of Top US Fishing Spots

OK, I’ll be the first to admit that this isn’t the most well known publication.  In fact, I’m not even sure what they focus on…I’m guessing big canoes.

Their “About” page was the default text from WordPress, so that wasn’t much help.  But judging by their other articles (100+), it seems they have a strong focus on outdoor activities…the OBX’s specialty!

So, they seem like a good judge of fishing locations.  Plus, I really can’t argue with their list of “5 Best Fishing Places in the U.S.“…the OBX is number 1!

Here’s what the Big Canoe had to say about fishing along the Outer Banks…

1) Finally, coming in number one on our list of the best fishing places in the US is the Outer Banks. Located on the coast of North Carolina, the Outer Banks is the perfect ‘back to nature’ vacation spot for a family or a fisherman looking to pull in as many fish as he can handle. What makes the Outer Banks such a special fishing place is that it is located along migration routes for monster schools of fish. During the month of November, the Outer Banks offers what is probably the most active, exciting fishing anywhere in the world.

Beautiful fall weather.  Great fall fishing.  Now’s an ideal time to be on the OBX.  We have a great homes available:  www.OuterBanksVacations.com

Outer Banks Sunset

Ok, it may not be a top 10 list from Time Magazine or National Geographic, but it’s a list and we love lists…especially when the Outer Banks is on them!  Plus, you can’t argue with the premise…OBX sunsets are pretty spectacular.

CheapOAir.com recently compiled their list of the Five Best Places to See Sunsets in the U.S., and the Outer Banks made the list.

Yay OBX!

Outer Banks Named in List of Best Islands Close to Home

Islands.com recently named  the Outer Banks the best island close to home for history.  In addition to gorgeous beaches, great food, and an abundance of nature, the Outer Banks is extremely rich in history; brave settlers in the Lost Colony, the swashbuckling pirates that pillaged the Atlantic coast, or the Wright Brothers first flight, the OBX has a wealth of historical relevance.

One of the great aspects of the OBX is it’s accessibility.  The islands are remote enough to offer that “removed from civilization” feeling, but in reality, the Outer Banks is less than a half a days drive from most of the eastern seaboard.

Even to this day, historical discoveries are being made on the Outer Banks.  Within the past few weeks, the oldest shipwreck along North Carolina was discovered on the northern beaches of the Outer Banks.  Below is the commentary from Islands.com:

Best for History
Outer Banks, North Carolina
Kitty Hawk at the north end of the Outer Banks is just 79 miles south of the airport in Norfolk, Virginia. Cape Hatteras to the south was declared the United States’ first national seashore in 1953, and the Outer Banks calls itself “America’s Beach.” www.outerbanks.org
