Outer Banks - 4.18.11 - Spring in Full Swing

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, April 18, 2011.

This video was shot at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

Spring is in full swing! It was a beautiful weekend on the OBX, and the great spring weather will continue this week.

We had some wild thunderstorms on Saturday night, and a number of tornadoes touched down in North Carolina; so our hearts go out to anyone that was affected by the storms. The OBX fared pretty well. Duck had some damage, but other than that things are good.

Mother Nature made up for a crazy Saturday night with some beautiful weather yesterday with temps in the lower 70′s, chest high surf, and lots of fishing! The great weather continues today and throughout this week. Temps in the upper 70′s today. The sun is shining, and the wind is light out of the west.

The swell from yesterday is leftover this morning, and there is a glassy waist high wave coming through. A good longboard wave should last for most of the day.

The beaches are very active. It’s a busy week with Bike Week and spring break this week. A lot of people out and about, and a lot of excited energy for spring.

The OBX fishing is going strong. The offshore fishing continues with yellow fin, blue fin, and black fin tuna, some mahi-mahi, and a few reports that billfish are showing up!

The piers are all open, and giving consistent reports. Spring fish are here. Blow toads, croaker, blue fish, sea mullet, some rock and puppy drum in the Sound.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 4.15.11 - Pretty Spring Day

Outer Banks - 4.15.11 - Pretty Spring Day

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing report for Friday, April 15, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at my favorite secret spot on the Sound. I’m luckly enough to hang out with my rugrat, Finn, today, and we won’t get out to the beach until this afternoon, so I figured I’d do a report from the Sound this morning.

It’s been a great spring week with sun and warm temps in the 60′s to low 70′s, and this great weather continues today, through the weekend, and into next week. It’s beautiful today with sun and no clouds, mid 60′s, and a 10 mph wind out of the north. The 10 day forecast looks great with a few chances of thunderstorms, but mostly sun and warm temps.

The surf is building through tomorrow, and it should reach the shoulder high range. The wind won’t match up until Sunday, but the swell should still be in the chest high range, and the wind looks like it will be ideal for clean surf all day Sunday and into Monday morning. The swell will fade to waist high on Monday. Looks like a good OBX weekend for weather and surf.

The OBX fishing is going strong. The water temps have warmed to 55 degress, and the fish are starting to show up. Blow toads are being hauled in at the Avalon Pier, and they are usually the first fish of the spring followed closely by sea mullet. There are also blue fish in the area, and some catches in the Sound of puppy drum and rock fish. Offshore fishing is still strong with blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna and mahi-mahi.

Spring is here…and summer is close behind. Great time to be on the Outer Banks. Hope to see you soon.

Have fun!

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.

Another great spring day. Sun, temps in the upper 60′s, and a nice offshore wind out of the southwest at 10 – 15 mph. This weather will stick with us through the weekend – sun and temps in the 60′s.

The offshore wind is cleaning up the remaining swell for some fun longboard waves. The surf will be fading throughout the day from waist to knee. Definitely a pretty day to be in the water. Although we need the water to warm a bit more so we can get out of our winter suits. Water temps are stuck around 50 degrees right now, but the warm days and warm west winds should continue to bring the temps up.

Speaking of warmer water, as the water warms, the fishing will heat up too, and we are starting to see signs of some great OBX fishing. The offshore fishing is going strong with blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna, and some dolphin (mahi mahi) mixed in. We are starting to get reports of catches out of the surf, but more so on the southern beaches because the water temps are already picking up down there. However, the piers are open and we are getting report of decent catches off the piers, and the Sound action is starting to pick up as well. Blue fish, sea mullet, rock, puppy drum are all in the area.

Enjoy!

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, April 11, 2011.

This video was shot in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM at the “Neaptide.”

I’m not trying to jinx us, but it sure does feel like Spring is here to stay. I’m sure there will be a chilly day here and there, but it feels like warm spring weather is the new norm. Glad to have you here spring…please stay a while.

Great start to the week today with temps in the mid 70′s. There are some lingering clouds, so it’s overcast…but it’s in the 70′s! We really can’t complain. The warm weather will be with us throughout the week. Temps will stay in the 60′s and despite a rain shower here and there, the sun will be out most of the week.

We have some swell leftover from the weekend this morning, and a offshore southwest wind is cleaning it up as it fades. Fun stomach high wave this morning. The swell will build tomorrow afternoon, and it looks like there could be some clean chest high surf late afternoon/early evening tomorrow. The swell will fade quickly on Wednesday, but Wednesday morning could still be fun as it fades.

The OBX fishing is heating up. The offshore fishing is going strong with reports of blue fin, yellow fin, and black fin tuna, and some reports of dolphin. We are also starting to get reports inshore of blue fish, sea mullets, and croakers. As the water temps continue to rise, the fishing will continue to increase.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 4.7.11 – Perfect Spring Day

Outer Banks - 4.7.11 - Perfect Spring Day

Outer Banks - 4.7.11 - Perfect Spring Day

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, April 7, 2011.

This video was shot at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

It’s great to be back on the Outer Banks, and thanks to Brittany for doing a great job filling in for me with the reports while I was gone. I was in Hilton Head, SC for a vacation rental conference, and I can say Hilton Head is a nice beach, but it is no Outer Banks!

Perfect spring day today. Bright sun, blue skies, and temps around 70 degrees. This weather should stick with us for through the weekend with temps in the mid 60′s and sun.

We have a nice offshore wind heading out of the southwest at about 10 mph. Perfect wind to clean up the surf, but unfortunately, there’s only a trace swell coming through today…about ankle high. The good news is that the swell should build over the next couple days, and it looks like the wind will match up late Saturday and early Sunday for some clean chest high surf. It looks like Sunday morning may be the best bet, but I’ll keep an eye on it.

OBX fishing is going strong and picking up steam. It’s been a bit slow for the past couple days, but the variety of reports is increasing. We are still getting reports of blue fin tuna catches offshore, with some yellow fin mixed in as well. Puppy drum catches have been reported in the Sound, a flounder catch at the Little Bridge heading to Manteo, a rock caught in the Sound, and now that the piers are open again, we got a report of a croaker and a sea mullet caught at Avalon Pier. Nothing consistent and only one fish at a time, but it is a sign of what’s to come. As the water continues to warm, the fishing will continue to increase.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 4.1.11 – Happy April. Sun & Warm Temps on the Way.

Outer Banks - 4.1.11 - Happy April

Outer Banks - 4.1.11 - Happy April

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, April 1, 2011.

This video was shot at the Sutton Ave. beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

Happy April! It feels good to flip the calendar. Another month closer to warm weather. March was tough on the Outer Banks. A few nice days, but on the whole, it came in like a lion and left like a lion….a lot of wind, rain, and chilly weather. But April is off to a great start.

A bit overcast to start the day, but the sun is fighting it’s way out, and the temps are warming up. We’ll have sun by the afternoon, and temps in the upper 50′s today. The sun will stick with us for the next few days, and temps will increase to the 60′s over the weekend and 70 degrees to start next week.

We have a northwest wind at about 10 mph this morning, and it’s doing a pretty good job of cleaning up the swell we have left over from yesterday. Decent day for surf as the sun comes out. A good longboard wave in the water. About stomach to chest to start, but it will be fading through the day.

OBX fishing is going strong. Getting good reports of tuna offshore; blue fin and yellow fin tuna. And some good reports of puppy drum catches out of the sound. The water temp is about 50 degrees in the ocean and the Sound, and as it continues to rise, the fishing action will continue to improve. We should have some catches out of the surf any day now.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 3.30.11 – Chilly & Wet. Surf tomorrow?

Outer Banks - 3.30.11 - Chilly & Wet in Kitty Hawk

Outer Banks - 3.30.11 - Chilly & Wet in Kitty Hawk

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, March 30, 2011.

This video was shot at the Saltaire Cottage Court on the beach road in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM. We had a request from Darren in OH for a look at the beach access at the Saltaire, so thanks to Darren for the request…happy to oblige.

Yuck. Chilly and wet. Temps in the low 50′s and rain today. Luckily, the sun should return tomorrow, and the temps will warm up a bit as we head to the weekend.

Some swell is starting to build in the area today, but the wind is blowing out of the northeast at about 15 mph, so no surf today. However, the wind should swing around the west tomorrow and die down. So, it seems like there could be decent chest high surf tomorrow. Based on the wind forecast, it seems like the surf should clean up around lunch time and be decent through the end of the day.

OBX fishing is going well. Still getting a lot of reports of blue fin tuna catches offshore, and we are starting to hear reports of yellow fin tuna as well. We are also getting decent reports of puppy drum catches in the Sound. As the water continues to warm (50 degrees now) the fishing activity will continue to improve. Hopefully we’ll have some catches out of the surf soon.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 3.29.11 - Pretty Day

Outer Banks - 3.29.11 - Pretty Day

Sun rise on the Sound. A little chill in the air, but pretty day. Temps around 50 degrees today. There is a light north wind at about 10 mph and no clouds in the sky. No surf today. Blue fin tuna are biting offshore and puppy drum in the Sound. Hopefully some catches out of the surf soon.

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 3.28.11 – Spring, please come back…

Outer Banks - 3.28.11 - Chilly Start in KDH

Outer Banks - 3.28.11 - Chilly Start in KDH

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, March 28, 2011.

This video was shot just south of the Avalon Pier at the 5th St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 8:30 AM.

Where did spring go?! I hope it comes back soon.

It was a chilly, windy, and wet weekend on the Outer Banks. Temps in the 40′s, wind blowing out of the northeast at 20 mph, and rain. Unfortunately, the week is starting out the same way. It’s overcast today with temps in the 40′s sticking around for the next couple days. The sun should return in the next day or two, and the temps will warm up as the week progresses. We should be approaching 60 degrees by next weekend.

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t help much with the surf or fishing this weekend.

No surf today, and not much swell coming in this week. It looks like we could have chest high swell in the area by the end of the week, but forecasts aren’t predicting surf. Although, I looked at the wind forecast, and I’m thinking there could be a chance on Friday. I’ll keep an eye on it.

As for OBX fishing, unfortunately, not much activity over the weekend due to the wind and rain, but there are still large schools of blue fin tuna in off shore and reports of puppy drum in the Sound. As the water warms the activity will continue to improve.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 3.25.11 – Pretty but a chill in the air…

Outer Banks - 3.25.11 - Pretty but chilly at Avalon Pier

Outer Banks - 3.25.11 - Pretty but chilly at Avalon Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, March 25, 2011.

This video was shot at Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

Spring has officially arrived, and it felt like it earlier in the week with 70 degree temps, but a chill is in the air today. The sun is out, but temps have fallen back to the low 50′s, and will stay that way for the next few days. Chilly compared to 70, but still pretty seasonable.

There’s some swell in the water, but unfortunately the 15 mph northeast wind isn’t cooperating with the surf. So, no surf today, and although the swell will stick around for a few days, no surf in the foreseeable future as the wind will not match up. But surf changes quickly, so I’ll keep an eye on it.

OBX fishing is going strong. There were guys working on the Avalon Pier this morning, so that’s a great sign that the Pier will be opening soon. We continue to get a lot of great reports of blue fin tuna catches offshore…a bunch of schools in the area, and we are starting to get pretty consistent reports of puppy drum catches in the Sound. Catches from the surf should arrive soon.

Enjoy!
