Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 12.15.10 – Brrrr….

Outer Banks Frozen Sound

Outer Banks Frozen Sound

Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, December 15, 2010.

This video was shot is Kill Devil Hills at 8:30 AM.

Brrrr….

It’s another chilly one. Temps in the 30′s and wind chill in the 20′s. But the sun is shining, and despite the cold, it’s a very pretty day.

We’re stuck in a cold, windy weather pattern, and it should stick with us for the next week or so. Winds are heavy out of the northwest today at about 20 mph.

No surf to report. A little swell coming through, but the wind isn’t helping. Not really worth it to brave the cold for sloppy waves.

The silver lining is the this cold spell should continue to push the rockfish south. The rock have been spotted in Corolla, so hopefully we’ll have a good run on fish soon.

10 days until Christmas.

Enjoy and stay warm.

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 12.8.10

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, December 8, 2010.

This video was shot at the Ocean Bay Life Saving Station in Kill Devil Hills this morning at 9:00 AM.

The big news is it is Chilly! Just like the rest of the US, we are stuck in a cold snap that won’t let go. We’ll be lucky to get to 40 degrees today. The good news is I hear it will warm up this weekend.

No surf to report, and the fish aren’t really biting today either. Seems everyone is in hibernation for a few days.

17 days until Christmas!

Enjoy.

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Southwest Winds & Ice Cream Headaches

90 + degrees and sunny all weekend! Hot, hot, hot…and humid. Perfect beach weather, but as you’ll notice in the Pic O’ the Day, beach goers seem to be hanging at the edge of the water. Why?

Well, there has been a steady southwest wind for a few days, and while that is great to clean up waves for surfing (no swell by the way…boo), on the OBX, winds out of the west tend to chill the water. The warmer surface water is blown out to sea and the cooler water rises up.  The water temp can vary quite a bit from day to day on the Outer Banks depending on winds and currents.

Hence, the beach goers at the edge; the water was great to cool off in for a quick dip, but the ice cream headaches were tough.

Good news…the winds have switched to the north, and the water is already heating up; I’ve heard as high as 69 already!

Endangered Sea Turtles Recuperating at Outer Banks Aquarium

Outer Banks Sea Turtle

Outer Banks Sea Turtle

The North Carolina Aquarium, located on nearby Roanoke Island in Manteo, is helping nurse dozens of sea turtles back to health after being rescued from the Outer Banks’ beaches.

The cold-blooded animals appear to have beached themselves after being stunned by low water temperatures. The turtles are all either of the loggerhead, green or kemp’s ridley varieties of sea turtles.
