Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report – 10.14.10

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach & Surf Report for Thursday, October 14, 2010.

Great OBX fall day. Starting out with bright sun and temps in the upper 60′s. There’s a chance of rain this afternoon, but hopefully it passes us by. The temps should stay in the upper 60′s to lower 70′s for the next few days.

The wind is still here though. About 10 mph out of the ENE today, but it should swing around to the NW in the next day or two, and it will start blowing hard…upper teens to lower 20′s. So, it should be a warm but breezy weekend.

Unfortunately, no surf to report, but the fish are biting…a lot of Blues at the Avalon Pier in the past couple days.

Enjoy.

Perfect Outer Banks Surf. And More on the Way?

A low pressure system swung in from the north east a day or two ago, and it hung off the coast of the Outer Banks long enough to send some amazing surf.  Yesterday was about as good as it gets.

Perfect conditions; water temps in the 70′s, air temps in the upper 80′s, a light off-shore wind, and clean waist to shoulder sets lining up one after another.

This video was shot in about 10-15 mintues, and I lost track of the number of great waves and great rides I saw.

Pretty darn close to perfect OBX surf.

Thanks Mother Nature.  Please come again soon.

Now we are setting our sights on the two tropical systems moving through the Atlantic.  At this point, both Danielle and Earl seem to be staying out to sea.  This could spell a very good scenario for OBX surf.

Then again, it could be a lot of water moving around with no surf.  Surf conditions are sensitive to say the least, and right now, the winds don’t seem to be cooperating, but who knows, we could be surprised.  Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

At this point, the surf report seems to be saying early Monday is the best bet.

ESPN Surfing Gives a Shout Out to Outer Banks Spring Surf

ESPN Surfing focused an article on the great south swell the OBX received from Mother Nature last week.

Surfing requires a wide range of conditions to come together in order to setup the right conditions for great waves, and the Outer Banks definitely has it share of great waves, but the necessary conditions are constantly shifting and very difficult predict.  Experience is the best teacher, and even experience has it’s limitations on the OBX.    Seasons are changing, and so are the OBX surf conditions.

The article highlights some great points about the reckless Outer Banks surf conditions and gives some good points of comparison between the Right and Left Coasts…

“[W]ith the change of the seasons, low pressure systems are taking a different track across the country now. That means south swells instead of the constant barrage of beefy nor’easters (for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast at least) that lasted all winter.”

“While everyone gets to boost Trestles [California] in a nice stretchy 3/2, the boots and gloves are still pretty mandatory on the Right Coast. Surfers on the West Coast have a pretty good idea which reefs will be breaking, while East Coasters have to scout out which sandbars are hot week to week.”

The article also highlights some of the great work of local Outer Banks surf photographer Matt Lusk.
