OBX Triathalon Needs Volunteers: September 9-11

Plan on visiting the OBX from the 9-11? Outer Banks Sporting Events, sponsor of the Outer Banks Triathlon are in need of volunteers from September 9th through the 11th to set up water stations, work the expos and offer support to runners from start to finish. Unfortunately Hurricane Irene caused a number of previous volunteers to withdraw from the event.

OBSE’s proceeds from the event are split between the Outer Banks Community Foundation and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation. As you can imagine these organizations are expected to show a significant increase in requests for financial aid from their community in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. The triathlon is just another small way to help rebuild our area.

If you will be in the area or would like to know how you can help please visit the Outer Banks Triathlon site for more information.

Save Turtles…and the Environment. Help Keep the Outer Banks Beaches Clean.

Outer Banks N.E.S.T

Outer Banks N.E.S.T

The North Carolina Aquarium encourages Outer Banks residents and visitors to help keep the OBX beaches clean and save the endangered sea turtles by picking up trash. In an effort to raise money and awareness, the NC Aquarium is accepting specific pieces of trash in exchange for funds directed towards the endangered sea turtles.

With limited volunteers The Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) has already raised over $100 by sending in granola bar wrappers and Frito-Lay chip bags.

If you want to help out review the list of acceptable items to be donated and once you have saved up a stash, send them to Christian Legner at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.

P.O. Box 967 Manteo, North Carolina 27954.

Please make sure wrappers and chip bags are separated from each other.  Thanks!

Here is a list of items that can be donated:

• Any granola, power, nut, or Clif bar with a foil lining.

Currituck County May Donate $1M Towards a New Medical Helicopter

Nightingale HelicopterAfter months of deliberation, the County of Currituck (home to the Outer Banks wild horses) and its commissioners will decide if the county will donate $1 million towards a new emergency helicopter

This helicopter will serve as support for the Nightingale air ambulance. Currently the Nightingale performs more emergency rescues in Currituck than anywhere else in Eastern North Carolina.

Traffic becomes so thick in these areas during the summer that with cases like head trauma, the Nightingale can mean the difference between life and death.

“They save lives,” said Janet Taylor, a Currituck commissioner. “Many of those people would not live if not for Nightingale coming and getting them.”  As of right now, the commissioners of Currituck seem to be split on this issue. It will be interesting to see how this issue is resolved.
