Outer Banks Lighthouse Exhibit

Outer Banks - Bodie Island Lighthouse Aerial, Restoration

Outer Banks - Bodie Island Lighthouse Aerial, Restoration

Have you seen the Bodie Island Lighthouse lately? Surrounded by scaffolding the lighthouse is getting a make-over and will be the subject of an upcoming exhibit this Friday March 4, hosted by the Outer Banks History Center.

The news is a sigh of relief from previous reports that the Outerbanks Lighthouse Restoration Hits a Snag, noting multiple safety issues that could substantially delay completion of the restoration process.

Did you know there have been three Bodie Island Lighthouses?! This historic lighthouse, first lit in 1872, is welcoming its 3rd large restoration project. The first Bodie Island Lighthouse sunk in on one side because of poor foundation and the second one was demolished by Confederate soldiers. The third time will surely be a charm.

Be sure to join the friends of the OBHC, the staff and members of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society for the opening reception Friday March 4, 2011 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Here you will be able to learn more about this historic lighthouse as well as other early Navigational Aids in America. You can also enjoy a lighthouse keeper’s favorite meal of biscuit and beans and further information on the restoration of this famous OBX landmark.

Eve Turek - Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a natural wonderland; a Nationally recognized and persevered seashore, the tallest sand dune on the east coast, mile upon mile of undisturbed beaches, wild horses, sunrises and sunsets over vast bodies of water, and the list goes on.  One of the most mesmerizing natural elements along the Outer Banks is weather patterns that change on a daily, if not hourly, basis and the resulting colorful displays in the skies.

As a result of this amazing mix of natural elements the OBX is a favorite muse for photographers far and wide, including many that call the Outer Banks home.

From August 1st through August 30th, the art gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park is featuring an amazing exhibit of weather and sky photographs from three great Outer Banks photographers.

August 1-30.

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Mon-Fri) 10 a.m. 4 p.m. (Sat)

The three are well-known Outer Banks photographers with a passion for weather, sky and its moods.

Bruce Roberts discovered his fascination for photography at a young age.  When he was a teenager, he set up a homemade darkroom in the basement of his family’s home to develop photos that he had taken.  He then went on to earn a degree from NYU and spend two years in the Air Force.  After serving in the Air Force, Roberts made his way to North Carolina where he began his professional photography career taking pictures that were published in the Hamlet News Messenger, and his work then went on to be published in national publications, as well as the magazine “Our State.”  Roberts has received a variety of accolades, including two time Southern Photographer of the Year, and he is often associated as the person who pioneered the use of 35 millimeter cameras in photojournalism.

To honor his great work, a photojournalism exhibit will open on March 5th at the Outer Banks History Center.  This exhibit will include varied aspects of Roberts’ work, from black and white to color, from the Blue Ridge to the Outer Banks.

NC Aquarium on the Outer Banks Adds Some Bite

Outer Banks Shark
Outer Banks Shark

The NC Aquarium on the Outer Banks has a massive “Graveyard of the Atlantic” exhibit that consists of a 285,000 gallon tank and a variety of sharks.  Ten years after the renovated and enlarged aquarium reopened, the sharks remain the most popular of its exhibits.  The exhibit, including a 300 pound sand tiger shark, is already one of the most popular stops at the aquarium, but it’s about to become even more popular.

By summer 2010, OBX visitors that venture over to the aquarium will see some additional sharks and additional shark exhibits.  The aquarium is planning to open $75,000 worth of new shark exhibits.

The planned exhibits include:

  • Three new sharks already added to the big tank, and more are expected in the coming months.
  • Sharks to replace the audio-visual display about storms that had been in the changing exhibit room.
  • Small sharks called chain dogfish to be displayed in a saltwater gallery tank.
  • Interactive games, photo opportunities and a touch tank are being discussed as possibilities.
  • Tropical fish that are commonly called sharks but are not – for instance, rainbow sharks, red tail sharks, and bala sharks – to be displayed in the freshwater gallery.

Free Watercolor Exhibit on the Outer Banks

Watercolor

A free watercolor exhibit is on display at the Roanoke Island Festival Park throughout July.

The Browning family has long roots on the Outer Banks.  Dixie Browning was raised on Hatteras Island in the 30′s and 40′s.  She describes her paintings as places in which to wander rather than see.  She is the co-founder of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.  Dixie also spends some of her time writing romance and mystery novels.  Her Daughter-in-law, Linda, has also taken up the art of painting and selected watercolor as her medium of choice.
