Outer Banks: 12.13.11 - Bright Sun & Chilly Wind

Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, December 13, 2011.

This video was shot at the Hayman St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

December is moving quickly. A little less than two weeks until Christmas (my math was off in the video)!

Pretty day with bright sun, blue skies, temps in the 50′s, but a stiff northeast wind is adding a chill to the day. Temps will warm up to the 60′s over the next couple days, and the sun will stick with us through the week.

Unfortunately, no surf to report today. There is chest high swell, but this northeast wind is knocking it down. The good news is that Thursday and Friday look decent. The swell will stick with us, the wind should switch to the southwest. Thursday looks like chest high surf with a southwest wind at 5-10 mph. The swell will drop and the wind will pick up a bit for Friday, but it still looks like it could be a decent day for OBX surf. Water temps at 55 degrees so you’ll need a 5/4 wetsuit.

OBX fishing is slow. Wind is stiff and water temps are cooling. The good news is that stripers are showing up. Two 40 pounders caught at the Oregon Inlet bridge two weekends ago, and a 30 pounder caught in Mann’s Harbor this past weekend.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

OBX Moment of Zen: 12.12.11 – Strong Northeast Wind

Outer Banks: 12.12.11 - Strong NE Wind

Outer Banks: 12.12.11 - Strong NE Wind

Good morning. Here’s Your OBX Moment of Zen for Monday, December 12, 2011. This video was recorded at 9:00 AM at the 5th St. beach access.

Good week of weather ahead. Sun and mild temps in the 50′s, but we have a stiff northeast wind hanging around the Outer Banks.

Surf is messy, but hopefully it will clean up towards the end of the week.

Outer Banks fishing is slow with this strong wind, but the good news is stripers are starting to show up.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks: 12.8.11 - A Chill in the Air

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, December 8, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at the 5th St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills.

Pretty day, but it’s chilly. A cold front moved last night bringing some north wind and temps around 50 degrees. Quite a change from the 70 degree temps we’ve had the past couple days. Temps will stay in the 50′s the next few days with bright sun and a north wind.

Unfortunately, not much surf to report. The past two days we’ve enjoyed fun waist to chest surf, but it’s messy today. There is some swell in the area, but this north wind isn’t cooperating to clean it up.

OBX fishing is slowing down. Reports are slow the past couple days. Speckled trout is still in the area, and as the water continues to cool we’ll keep seeing the stripers show. Hopefully we’ll have a good striper bite soon.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 12.6.11 – Perfect December Beach Day

Outer Banks: 12.6.11 - Perfect December Beach Day

Outer Banks: 12.6.11 - Perfect December Beach Day

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk.

Time is moving quickly. Already December 6th. Holidays will be here before we know it. But how about a perfect December beach day to keep us smiling?!

Wow it’s nice today! Sun, upper 60′s, light southwest breeze, fun surf, empty beaches, and the speckled trout are biting. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Temps will cool as we get closer to the weekend, and should be a seasonable 50 degrees by Saturday.

The offshore breeze is about 5-10 mph out of the southwest, and it’s cleaning up the chest high swell we have in the area, so it’s a great day to catch some OBX surf! The swell will stick around through tomorrow, and the wind will be out of the southwest tomorrow, but it’s going to pick up to 15-20 mph. So the surf should be decent tomorrow, but today is probably the highlight of the week.

OBX fishing is starting to slow down, but we’ve still got some good activity. Offshore they are catching yellow fin tuna. We’re getting limited reports from the piers these days since Avalon, Outer Banks, and Nags Head are closed for the season, but Jennette’s and Kitty Hawk are reporting speckled trout in the area. The big ObX fishing news is that we are starting to get reports of stripers in the area. A 40 pound striper was hauled in at the Oregon Inlet bridge over the weekend. As the water continues to cool, we should start to see some great striper bites! Stay tuned.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 12.1.11 – Fast Wind = Slow Day

Outer Banks: 12.1.11 - Pretty But Chilly at Kitty Hawk Pier

Outer Banks: 12.1.11 - Pretty But Chilly at Kitty Hawk Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, December 1, 2011.

This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:00 AM.

Happy December! I’m not sure how it is that time moves so quickly. I can recall looking at the clock in school and feeling like it was moving backwards, yet now I feel like I blink and a month goes by. This means I’m getting old, right? Dang!

Great time to start thinking about those spring and summer vacations…create some warm thoughts on chilly days, and beat the crowd to the house you want. Take a look at our gorgeous OBX vacation rental homes (www.OuterBanksVacations.com).

But back to the subject at hand; what’s the beach like today? In a word, chilly. We enjoyed some awesome weather over the Thanksgiving weekend and into the beginning of this week – sun and upper 60′s – but that has changed a bit. The sun is sticking with us, but the temps have dipped to the mid 50′s, and there’s a strong northeast wind blowing at 15-20 mph today…definitely adding a chill to the air.

Looking ahead, the weekend looks great with sun, temps around 60 degrees, and the wind will slow down.

Unfortunately, no surf to report. We have swell in the chest high range, but this stiff onshore wind is making it real messy. Doesn’t look like the wind will swing back offshore until next week.

Fishing is slow today too. Fast wind = a slow day. Still a lot of speckled trout in the area, and hopefully we’ll see a good striper bite soon. Keep your fingers crossed.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 11.29.11 – Quiet & peaceful at the beach…

Outer Banks: 11.29.11 - Peace & Quiet at Lillian St.

Outer Banks: 11.29.11 - Peace & Quiet at Lillian St.

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, November 11, 2011.

This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. The OBX enjoyed some awesome weather during the holiday and through the weekend. Sun and upper 60′s. Luckily, that weather is sticking around today. There are some clouds in the area, so it will be a mix of sun and clouds, but temps are mild in the mid 60′s.
Pretty great talking about upper 60′s at the end of November!

The rest of the week looks nice. Temps will dip a bit to the mid 50′s, but we’ll have lots of sun all the way through the weekend.

We do have a relatively strong offshore wind today adding a bit of a chill, but still mild; about 10-15 mph out of the southwest. The good news is the wind is cleaning up the waist to chest swell we have in the area, so the surf is looking decent today. The wind is a bit strong and blowing the tops of the waves off, but worth getting wet for a few fun waves. And the water temp is still pretty mild; 58 degrees at Avalon Pier this morning.

Speaking of the piers, some of the piers have closed down for the season. Avalon Pier, Nags Head Pier, and the Outer Banks Pier closed down Sunday for the season. The Kitty Hawk Pier will remain open through January, and Jennette’s Pier is open as well…I think Jennette’s may stay open year-round.

The piers may be closing, but the fish are still biting. Offshore they are catching yellow fin tuna and some wahoo. There are some striper, puppy drum, and red drum in the area, but the big news is the speckled trout. Lots of great catches and keepers around, especially north of Kitty Hawk Pier.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Amazing Bird Migration

Outer Banks: 11.28.11 - Amazing Bird Migration at Avalon Pier

Outer Banks: 11.28.11 - Amazing Bird Migration at Avalon Pier

I strolled up to the beach this morning for my daily picture/beach report, and I was wow’ed by a pretty cool sight. Hundreds (maybe 1000+?) of birds moving around Avalon Pier and heading south. Very cool.

This is some conjecture, but I think they were ducks (with some pelicans and sea gulls mixed in), and it seemed like they were migrating south. They were bouncing from the water to the air, but they weren’t taking the time to fish, so migration seems to make the most sense. Regardless of the reason, it was awesome to watch nature doing its thing.

Hope you had a great Turkey Day. The weather was perfect on the OBX, and that great weather is continuing today. Sun and 60′s. Unfortunately no surf, but we could see some nice waves tomorrow. Piers are closing down for the season, but the fish are still biting.

Were you on the OBX for Thanksgiving? How did you spend your time when you weren’t gobbling down a delicious Turkey Day feast? We’d love to know. Please share in the comment section below.

Have a great day!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 11.21.11 – Great Thanksgiving week…

Outer Banks: 11.21.11 - Nice Fall Weather in Kitty Hawk

Outer Banks: 11.21.11 - Nice Fall Weather in Kitty Hawk

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, November 21, 2011.

This video was shot the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.

The gorgeous weather from the weekend is carrying into today and the rest of the week. Great time to be at the beach enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday. A little overcast to start today, but the sun is fighting its way out. Temps in the mid 60′s with an offshore breeze out of the southwest at 10 mph. Sun and 60′s for most of this week, and a gorgeous Thanksgiving Day on Thursday (maybe a bit windy).

The offshore breeze is cleaning up the waves. The surf is small, in the knee to waist range, but it’s real clean with this southwest wind. The swell will pick up a bit through the week; should be in the chest range by Thursday. But it looks like today will be the only day with the offshore wind.

OBX fishing is going well. Offshore the boats are hauling in yellow fin tuna, dolphin, and white marlin. The big story is the speckled trout. A lot of specks in the area with a bunch of keepers being hauled in at all of the piers and out of the surf. I also saw a report from our friends at www.RockSolidFishing.com that they hauled in a big rock fish near shore this morning. Some good fall fishing happening on the Outer Banks!

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Gorgeous Fall Weather

Outer Banks: 11.14.11 - Gorgeous Fall Day in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks: 11.14.11 - Gorgeous Fall Day in Kill Devil Hills

The Outer Banks is enjoying some beautiful fall weather to start the week! Sun and 70 degrees for the next few days.

There’s a light breeze out of the southwest today cleaning up a pretty little wave. The fish are biting. And the beach is empty!

Gotta love fall on the OBX!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 11.10.11 – Happy birthday USMC! Celebrate with sun & trout!

Outer Banks: 11.10.11 - Great Trout Fishing at Kitty Hawk Pier

Outer Banks: 11.10.11 - Great Trout Fishing at Kitty Hawk Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, November 10, 2011.

This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:00 AM.

Before I get into the report today, I’d like to wish all of the Marines a happy birthday. Today is the United States Marine Corps birthday, so Semper Fi to y’all!

We have a great fall day to celebrate. Sun, 60′s, light north wind at 5-10 mph, and water temps at 60 degrees. This weather will stick with us for the next few days.

The wildcard will be the wind. The wind should pick up to about 20 mph tomorrow, but it will slow down again for the weekend. The weekend weather looks great with sun and 60′s. Sunday’s weather for the Outer Banks Marathon looks fantastic; sun, 65 degrees, and a southwest wind at about 10 mph. Great day for running!

We have some big swell in the area, but the wind isn’t matching up. Although, today the wind is light enough where you could find some decent head high sections that are relatively clean. Tomorrow should be a mess with 20 mph winds out of the north and swell in the 6-9 foot range with a big storm moving north through the Atlantic.

The surf will clean up this weekend when the wind switches to the southwest, but the swell is going to fade at the same time. Seems like we should see waves in the keen to waist range for the weekend. Small, but clean and great weather. Could be worth getting in the water.

The big story over the past couple days is the OBX fishing. Trout fishing is going off on the piers and in the surf! There are some good striper catches in the Sound, and offshore they are pulling in yellow fin tuna.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!
