Outer Banks Sounds: A Showcase of Local OBX Music

Outer Banks Sounds

Outer Banks Sounds

Earlier today I “tweeted” (if you’re a Twitter lover, we’re there too!) about a live acoustic music session with a local Outer Banks musician on a great OBX radio station, 99.1 – The Sound.

It’s always fun to hear great local music.

I let the smooth sounds soothe my soul and moved on. Then I noticed a post on Outer Banks This Week (side note: Outer Banks This Week is a good resource for some detailed info on local OBX happenings) discussing a fantastic idea: a local Outer Banks music showcase. And my brain synapses started to click.

The smooth acoustic sounds on 99.1 were part of a much bigger idea. An idea with the goal of shining a spotlight on the local Outer Banks music scene. Awesome idea, right? The Outer Banks has some awesome musicians, but how do we find out about them?

I love music, and I love to find great new music…especially when they are local. But I struggle to find these local acts. So I can definitely sympathize with guests visiting for only one week. How do we know who these local acts are?

Well, here’s the answer; Outer Banks Sounds.

The Dare County Arts Council and 99.1 The Sound have joined forces to present a performance series and compilation album of original, local OBX music.

Here are the guidelines for this rad project:

Local Outer Banks musicians and/or bands with original, unlicensed music. Select musicians will be asked to play one showcase that will be held every third Thursday from 7-9pm, October through April at Kelly’s Restaurant and Tavern in Nags Head.  Each musician selected will have one track included on the inaugural Outer Banks Sounds CD.

The Outer Banks Sounds live music showcases are held at Kelly’s in Nags Head every third Thursday of the month through April. Each night three different bands or musicians play, and the public is invited to come hear the music. Playing this Thursday night – i.e. tomorrow – are Sean Bedula, Ruth Wyand and Jug Tucker.

The CD containing a song from each of the 16 musicians will be released in May.

Apparently I’m a bit behind the curve – sorry about that. Here we are in January, so we’ve already missed a few shows, but we still have a few shows left at Kelly’s, and the great compilation CD, to look forward to.

So, if you’re on the hunt for some great local Outer Banks music, now you know. And as G.I. Joe used to say in the 80′s, “Knowing is half the battle.” Yo Joe!

Fine Line OBX Art Contest: Proceeds to Benefit Hotline

What a sweet followup to our recent Outer Banks T-Shirt Contest! Fine Line is a non-profit clothing brand that donates 100% of its profits to a different local charity each year. The designs for the clothes are selected from entries submitted by local Outer Banks artists in their annual art contest. This year Fine Line is donating to the Hotline Outer Banks, a private, non-profit human services organization that provides crisis intervention, temporary shelter, information and referrals, advocacy and prevention education services to residents of and visitors to the Outer Banks.

If you are an OBX local and interested in submitting a design, keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be something you created specifically for this contest, it can be an older piece of art you think you would make a great t-shirt design. To make a submission you post it directly to Fine Line’s facebook wall. The contest is open until  November 31st. Good Luck!

Here is a winning design from Season 2 of the contest.

Tim Reynolds of Dave Matthews Band: An OBX Local

Any fellow DMB fans out there? Well if you didn’t know already, Tim Reynolds, the lead guitarist of Dave Matthews Band actually lives in Kill Devil Hills. Even cooler…Adam shared a duplex with him when he first moved to the Outer Banks. Reynolds recently sat down with Glide Magazine for an exclusive interview about his history with Dave Matthews Band and his solo career as founding member of TR3 (Tim Reynolds Trio). TR3 actually plays sometimes here locally and one of our very own Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty agents, Dave Martier, is the bands drummer.

He shared some pretty neat stories about being on the road with the band, how being part of such a successful modern rock band has affected him as a musician and what inspires him. Check out the article here to learn more about Tim and what makes him such a unique artist. Let us know what you think. Maybe if you are in the OBX you will see him around :)

I don’t know about you guys but going out to eat is  really risky business. You have to consider all your options…like is the food good?, is it expensive?, how big are the portions?, will I have to wait forever?, the list goes on. If you are tight on money like me you want to make sure that if you are going to go out to eat it better be worth it! When we say Outer Banks Treasure, we mean it, and Chilli Peppers is honestly one of the best restaurants I have ever been too.

If you are in the mood for a quick and easy lunch, their sandwiches are great. The BBQ sandwich is my favorite and the cucumber salad is amazing. If its dinner time, you have to try their fresh fish. No matter what the type of fish it is always a great meal. The coolest part is they grow many of the spices they use right in the back so it is fresh in every sense of the word. No one can resist a good margarita right? The first time i went to Chilli Peppers I got a watermelon margarita and I haven’t gone with a different flavor since, but they have many flavors to choose from and you can pick what shelf alcohol you want it it as well.

Out in the back they have cornhole and a new addition of a sliding walk-up window where you can order a beer outside and don’t have to go in. Or if you have been on the beach all day and look like a hot mess you don’t have to go sit inside, you can order what you want and sit out at the picnic tables. The atmosphere is relaxed, the beach music plays in the background and the drink specials rock, what more could you ask for on a vacation, or even just a night out to eat?

The restaurant is run by a great guy named Jim Douglas who was nice enough to let us come get some pictures and video to share with you guys. We really hope you enjoy the video and make sure that when you’re in the OBX you check out Chilli Peppers at MP 5.5 in Kill Devil Hills. Tell them Seaside sent you ;)

Ready for some more local flavor? I hope so. We’re back with the second episode in our brand new video series, Outer Banks Treasures. There are so many great things to discover on the OBX that it’s very easy to have a long list of great ideas!…stay tuned, more on the way.

Last time we gave you a sneak peek at one of the best photographers here on the OBX in her private Seaside Vacations employee shoot. Today we are going to continue in the creative direction with an amazing up and coming artist named Katy Caroline. Katy’s career is just taking off, but what she lacks in experience, she more than makes up for in breathtaking natural ability with a paint brush in hand. She has done many commissioned works from murals, to trompe l’oeils, to illustrations.

Recently she leaped head first into her art career and devotes all of her time to creating works of all different colors, textures and styles.  She will try anything once and has a true passion for what she does. She shares a deep connection with her Manteo roots which reflects in the countless paintings of the idyllic scenery of the Outer Banks.

As a Club Seaside partner, Katy offers an “Art in Action” event that gives Seaside Vacations’ guests to the opportunity to enjoy a glass of local wine and watch her in action as she paints, plus a tour of the studio and a chance to purchase her original art.

Katy is truly a delight to work with, a spectacular artist, and I am so happy to be able to share her awesomeness with you. :)

To learn more about Katy’s work check out her website, and when you are in the area make sure to stop by and view some of her work at ARTspace studio located at:  1 Ocean Blvd #108 Southern Shores, NC 27949

Outer Banks Catch

Outer Banks Catch

The Outer Banks local seafood promotion, Outer Banks Catch, is making progress.

Outer Banks Catch is a marketing initiative developed to create a brand identity for fish and shellfish landed by commercial fishermen in Dare, Currituck, Hyde, and Tyrrell counties.  Last week, the executive committee for Outer Banks Catch selected a logo for the marketing campaign, and the committee reached an agreement for the tagline, which is short and to the point, “Local Fishermen Approved.”

The next step for the campaign will be to create a membership package and pursue local restaurants, seafood markets, commercial fishermen and community partners.   When you are out and about on the OBX be sure you seek out the freshest, tastiest seafood that is caught right in our backyard!

Outer Banks Local Seafood Brand?

PilotOnline.com announced today that Dare County is preparing to launch a branding program called the “Outer Banks Catch” to help raise awareness about locally caught seafood and inform customers of the seasonality of seafood.

“This is really going to help the fishermen educate the general public, which is ultimately going to help the commercial fisherman,” said Jamie Reibel, a member of the county’s working watermen committee.  The article points out that vast majority of seafood eaten in the U.S. actaully comes from overseas.  There is a drastic difference in taste between frozen shipped seafood and fresh, locally caught seafood; the latter being much more tasty…and healthy.

Last year local fishermen caught about 22.7 million pounds of seafood in Dare County.  That much seafood translate into about $23 million dollars.  However, most of that catch is shipped off to New York and other ports.  The goal of this program is to ultimately increase demand for local seafood.

The goal is to have the campaign ready to present to the community by April 2010.

On your next trip to the Outer Banks try to buy local seafood, you’ll notice the difference!
