Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – Let Summer Begin…

Outer Banks - 5.31.11 - Lifeguard in Kill Devil Hills

Good afternoon. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, May 31, 2011.

This video was shot at the 5th St. beach access just south of the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills. I then stopped off at the Lillian St. beach access to grab the surf video.

Last day of May! Time flies! Hope y’all had a great Memorial Day weekend. Let the summer fun begin. The great stretch of perfect OBX weather continues. 80′s, sun, and light winds. I looked at the 10 day forecast this morning, and there was only 1 day with isolated t-storms. Other than that, it’s 80′s and sun for the foreseeable future.

In addition to a great stretch of beautiful weather, we’ve had a great streak of fun OBX surf. There has been waist high swell and offshore winds for about a week, and that streak continues today. Although, it could come to an end today. Surf is fun in the waist to chest range today, but the wind will switch onshore at some point today. We could still have some fun waves for the rest of the week, but without the offshore winds, the surf probably won’t be clean for the rest of the week…hopefully I’m wrong. :)

OBX fishing gets better everyday. Cobia have moved into the area. An 80 pound cobia catch over the weekend. Offshore is still seeing great dolphin catches, and a few blue and white marlin over the weekend. Near shore, bridges, piers, and the Sound are seeing a wide variety of catches – blue fish, spanish mackerel, croaker, spots, black drum, sea mullets.

Have fun!

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, May 27, 2011.

This video was shot just north of the Avalon Pier at the Hayman St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills.

Great start to Memorial Day weekend! The streak of great weather continues. I think it’s been almost two weeks since we’ve seen rain. The plants aren’t digging it (nice pun huh?!), but we’re loving it! Perfect for the holiday weekend; sun, 80′s, light wind. Get out and enjoy the beach!

In addition to a streak of great weather, we’ve had a good streak of fun surf this week. There has been a southwest wind all week cleaning up a fun longboard wave. That will continue today. Not much out there, but it’s a fun little wave, and the weather is perfect. Doesn’t look like we’ll have any larger surf until next week sometime.

OBX fishing is going strong. Offshore is seeing dolphin with some yellow fin tuna mixed in, and the occasional bill fish. The piers and the bridges have been very consistent with blue fish and croaker with an occasional flounder mixed in. And the Sound is doing very well with sea mullet, blue fish, croaker, and some flounder.

Have a great holiday weekend!

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, May 25, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills.

The great summer-like weather continues. Another beauty today with sun, temps in the upper 80′s, and a light SW wind. This weather is going to stick with all the way through the weekend…and hopefully into next week. Tough to beat summer weather in May!

The light southwest wind is cleaning up a fun longboard wave very nicely. I was surprised to see how fun the wave is this morning. I wasn’t expecting much, but when I walked over the dunes, I saw consistent waist high, clean waves coming through…and almost no one in the water. Great day to get went and catch a some fun waves.

The OBX fishing is going strong. Very consistent reports offshore, near shore, piers, bridges, and the Sound. A wide variety of fish in the area – tuna, dolphin, cobia, blues, spanish mackerel, sea mullet, etc.

Unfortunately, not much out of the surf yet, but as the water continues to warm, the surf casting will continue to get better.

Have fun!

Outer Banks - 5.20.11 - Sunrise on the Sound

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, May 20, 2011.

This video was shot at “The Sea Hawk” in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.

It is a great start to the Outer Banks weekend. Sun and temps in the 70′s today with a light offshore wind cleaning the little swell we have left over. This weather will stick with us through the weekend with temps in the upper 70′s and bright sun all weekend.

Yesterday was a great surf day with perfect spring weather, a light offshore wind, and clean chest high surf. The wind and the swell stuck around this morning cleaning up a great longboard wave. The swell will fade through the day, and we’ll have small surf through the weekend…maybe a longboard wave, but a pretty small bump…it will be clean though with some west winds.

OBX fishing is going strong. Offshore, near shore, piers, bridges, and Sound all reporting consistent catches of a wide variety of fish. The fishing should continue to improve as the water temps continue to increase.

Have a great weekend!

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, May 18, 2011.

This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:00 AM.

I looked at the 10 day forecast this morning, and there is nothing but sun and 70 degree temps! Ok, there are a couple spots of isolated thunderstorms, but that’s par for the course this time of year. As the temps and humidity increase, the OBX tends to see isolated thunderstorms in the afternoons.

But for the most part it is smooth sailing for the next 10 days! And today is keeping the trend. 70′s and sun with a southeast wind.

Unfortunately, that southeast wind is not cleaning the surf. There’s some swell, but it’s choppy due to the wind. However, the wind will swing around to the southwest tomorrow, so there is a good chance we could have clean, waist high surf tomorrow.

The OBX fishing is going strong. Consistent catch reports offshore with yellow fin tuna, dolphin, and some bill fish, and great report coming near shore, from the piers, the bridges and the Sound. A variety of fish in the area and more showing up every day – blue fish, founder sea mullet, croaker, spot, some black drum…the list keeps growing!

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 5.16.11 – Feels like summer!

Outer Banks - 5.16.11 - Great Spring Day at Avalon Pier

Outer Banks - 5.16.11 - Great Spring Day at Avalon Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, May 16, 2011.

This video was shot at 10 AM at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk.

Already May 16th?! Wow, May is flying by. Really starting to feel like summer. We had a gorgeous OBX weekend with sun and temps in the upper 70′s, and that weather is going to carry into this week. Sun and 70′s with the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms, but the isolated thunder boomers are pretty standard for this time of year. As the temps and humidity pick up, the Outer Banks tends to see afternoon, isolated thunderstorms. They are generally not too widespread, but there’s always a chance for a quick shower.

There is a fun longboard wave out there today. We had good swell all weekend, but the wind was not matching up to clean the surf. Most of that swell has died down, but we have a good offshore wind this morning cleaning up the leftover swell, and making a great longboard wave. After today, it looks like the end of the week is our best chance for more surf.

The Outer Banks fishing is picking up quite a bit. There are a wide variety of fish in the area, and catches from a variety of spots.

- Offshore is still seeing tuna (mainly yellow fin), dolphin, and some bill fish!
- Near shore = blue fish and Spanish mackerel
- Piers = sea mullet and blue fish
- Sound = Spanish mackerel, blue fish, flounder, sea mullet, & blow toads

Enjoy!

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Fresh Salt Air at Kitty Hawk Pier

Outer Banks - 5.12.11 - Fresh Salt Air at Kitty Hawk Pier

Outer Banks - 5.12.11 - Fresh Salt Air at Kitty Hawk Pier

It is a gorgeous spring day. The fresh salt air smells great. We have sun and temps in the upper 60′s today, and it will warm up for the weekend. There is decent head high swell in the area, but northeast wind is not allowing the surf to clean up. The surf could clean up a little tomorrow, but I’m not sure if we’ll get any good surf out of this swell…I hope I’m wrong. :) Spring fish are biting – offshore tuna and dolphin, inshore and piers – a lot of blue fish, some sea mullet and croaker.

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 5.4.11 – Fun surf, but funky weather on the way…

Outer Banks - 5.4.11 - Fun Surf at Avalon Pier

Outer Banks - 5.4.11 - Fun Surf at Avalon Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Wednesday, May 4, 2011.

This video was shot at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.

Starting to feel like summer. Yesterday was downright hot with bright sun and temps in the 80′s. The temps have cooled a bit today to the lower 70′s, but it’s humid and feeling like summer. At least it did when I shot the video.

It’s a great morning for surf. Fun chest high surf with a nice southwest wind cleaning the waves and about a dozen guys catching clean waves at Avalon Pier.

However, a cold front moved into the area a bit faster than I expected, and the weather has changed a bit. The wind has picked up and switched out of the north (surf not so clean anymore), temps dropped to the upper 60′s, and some rain moved it. Oh well, as the saying goes, “if you don’t like the OBX weather, just wait 15 minutes.” :)

OBX spring fishing is going strong. Tuna and dolphin offshore. Cobia are starting to move into the area. The piers are consistently reporting a lot blue fish, sea mullet, croaker, some flounder, and blowfish. The water temps are approaching 60 degrees, and as the temps continue to rise the fishing will continue to heat up as well.

Enjoy!

Outer Banks Jennette’s Pier Grand Opening Set for May 2011

Jennette's Pier - Outer Banks

Jennette's Pier - Outer Banks

Fishing, families, and fun.

Jennette’s Pier has been missed for years, but the fishing, families and fun will be back soon!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 21, 2011, when the new state-of-the-art, LEED certified, 1,000-foot concrete pier and 16,000-square-foot pier house will be christened and reopened to the public.

Originally built in 1939, Jennette’s is the oldest fishing pier on the Outer Banks. Battered by storms and rebuilt many times throughout its seventy-year life, Jennette’s was knocked down by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, just after the pier and its five-acre tract were purchased by the NC Aquarium Society. Now, after years of planning and twenty-four months of construction, Jennette’s will reemerge in 2011 as a one-of-a-kind educational ocean pier.

The Aquarium-operated complex will feature

  • Educational classrooms and programs,
  • Alternative energy demonstrations,
  • Live animal exhibits,
  • Meeting facilities,
  • A snack bar and tackle shop,
  • And a host of other displays and features for good family fun….with great fishing too!

You can check the Jennette’s Pier website for updates on grand opening events, fees and hours, activity calendars, facility rental options, employment opportunities, and other pier news.
