Outer Banks: 12.16.11 - December Perfection

Good morning. Here’s your OBX Moment of Zen for Friday, December 16, 2011.

This video was shot just north of the Nags Head Pier at the Bladen St. beach access.

Two days in a row of perfect December OBX conditions; sun, 60′s, offshore breeze, and great waist to chest surf.

It will cool off a bit for the weekend, but the weather is looking good through Christmas.

Outer Banks fishing is slow, but the stripers are stating to arrive.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Outer Banks: 12.6.11 - Perfect December Beach Day

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

This video was shot at 9:00 AM at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk.

Time is moving quickly. Already December 6th. Holidays will be here before we know it. But how about a perfect December beach day to keep us smiling?!

Wow it’s nice today! Sun, upper 60′s, light southwest breeze, fun surf, empty beaches, and the speckled trout are biting. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Temps will cool as we get closer to the weekend, and should be a seasonable 50 degrees by Saturday.

The offshore breeze is about 5-10 mph out of the southwest, and it’s cleaning up the chest high swell we have in the area, so it’s a great day to catch some OBX surf! The swell will stick around through tomorrow, and the wind will be out of the southwest tomorrow, but it’s going to pick up to 15-20 mph. So the surf should be decent tomorrow, but today is probably the highlight of the week.

OBX fishing is starting to slow down, but we’ve still got some good activity. Offshore they are catching yellow fin tuna. We’re getting limited reports from the piers these days since Avalon, Outer Banks, and Nags Head are closed for the season, but Jennette’s and Kitty Hawk are reporting speckled trout in the area. The big ObX fishing news is that we are starting to get reports of stripers in the area. A 40 pound striper was hauled in at the Oregon Inlet bridge over the weekend. As the water continues to cool, we should start to see some great striper bites! Stay tuned.

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Perfection?

Fall on the Outer Banks is ideal – warm air, warm water, empty beaches, fun surf, and great fishing.

Outer Banks: 9.13.11 - Perfect in Kitty Hawk?

Outer Banks: 9.13.11 - Perfect in Kitty Hawk?

It’s tough to find true perfection, but today is awful close to a perfect fall day on the OBX.

It would be nice to see some more size in the surf, and maybe slightly cleaner lines, but it’s darn close to perfection.

All the elements of a great beach day – Sun, 80′s, empty beach, almost no wind (very light west breeze), water at 75 degrees, waist high surf, & fish are biting!

Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Perfect summer day on the Outer Banks. 90′s, sun, cool southwest wind. There is a tiny longboard wave. Not much, but it’s a great day to be in the water anyway. Fish are biting – offshore, near shore, piers, bridges, surf, and Sound.

It’s a Goldie Locks Day…not too hot, not too cool. Just right. Sun and upper 70′s with a great north wind blowing a cool breeze. No surf, but the water temps are warming. Fish are biting offshore, near shore, piers, bridges, and the Sound! Wide variety of fish – croaker, flounder, spot, blue fish, sea mullet, cobia, dolphin, Spanish makerel.

Perfect Outer Banks Surf. And More on the Way?

A low pressure system swung in from the north east a day or two ago, and it hung off the coast of the Outer Banks long enough to send some amazing surf.  Yesterday was about as good as it gets.

Perfect conditions; water temps in the 70′s, air temps in the upper 80′s, a light off-shore wind, and clean waist to shoulder sets lining up one after another.

This video was shot in about 10-15 mintues, and I lost track of the number of great waves and great rides I saw.

Pretty darn close to perfect OBX surf.

Thanks Mother Nature.  Please come again soon.

Now we are setting our sights on the two tropical systems moving through the Atlantic.  At this point, both Danielle and Earl seem to be staying out to sea.  This could spell a very good scenario for OBX surf.

Then again, it could be a lot of water moving around with no surf.  Surf conditions are sensitive to say the least, and right now, the winds don’t seem to be cooperating, but who knows, we could be surprised.  Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

At this point, the surf report seems to be saying early Monday is the best bet.
