2012 Outer Banks Roller Derby Tournament: Derby Spills in Kill Devil Hills

Outer Banks Roller Derby

Outer Banks Roller Derby

Last year, around this time, I announced the start of the OBX roller derby league. A proud moment for all lovers of the elegant (that’s sarcasm ;) ) sport. Unfortunately, I hadn’t heard much since. I saw some ladies rolling around at the KDH park, but never heard of any games. Until today…

I just got word that a gnarly roller derby tournament is planned for early this spring; dubbed “Derby Spills in Kill Devil Hills.”  Great name, ladies.

Here are some details…
Derby Spills in Kill Devil Hills is an invitational roller derby tournament created to bring the leagues of North Carolina and Virginia together for a weekend of AWESOME derby bouts and education in the Outer Banks.

Tournament bouts will be played on Friday and Saturday with an optional training camp on Sunday.  The training camp is open to all skaters, even those not participating in the tournament.

The derby tourney will be the evening of Friday, April 27 and all day Saturday, April 28. It will be at Aviation Park in Kill Devil Hills (near high school, skate park, etc.) and tickets will be on sale soon at local businesses.

We’ll share more details as they are available.

The OBX derby ladies practice Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6-7:30 at Aviation Park across from First Flight High School - come out anytime and they’ll give you the low down on derby!

Last May I put up a post asking if Roller Derby was coming to the Outer Banks. I happened upon a video on YouTube of some OBX ladies trying to rally some fellow derby’ers, and it seems like they have accomplished their goal.

The Kill Devil Derby Brigade, the new OBX roller derby league, was officially announced yesterday on their blog (www.OBXrd.wordpress.com), and the ladies will be making their first public appearance at the annual OBX St. Patrick’s Day parade this weekend.

Here’s how they describe their beloved sport: “Roller derby is a full contact, fast paced, wheel screaming, heart pounding, speed racing sport that will help you build stamina, agility, teamwork skills, balance, strategic planning skills, and so much more!”

Awesome. Looking forward to seeing some games soon!

If you have any interest in participating, it seems like the Derby Brigade is recruiting ladies aged 18+ to skate with them. Please check out the Recruiting Page if you are interested!

Roller Derby on the Outer Banks?

Could it be?  Could Roller Derby be the next big craze on the OBX?

Well, maybe not, but here’s a video of some ladies that are trying to rally fellow derby’ers to create an OBX roller derby league/team.  Seems like a fun way to spend a summer afternoon.

So, if you are a derby’er (I may be making this term up) or a high-rolling Roller Derby financier, get in touch with BrianOBX on YouTube to join in the fight for OBX Roller Derby.
