OBX Triathalon Needs Volunteers: September 9-11

Plan on visiting the OBX from the 9-11? Outer Banks Sporting Events, sponsor of the Outer Banks Triathlon are in need of volunteers from September 9th through the 11th to set up water stations, work the expos and offer support to runners from start to finish. Unfortunately Hurricane Irene caused a number of previous volunteers to withdraw from the event.

OBSE’s proceeds from the event are split between the Outer Banks Community Foundation and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation. As you can imagine these organizations are expected to show a significant increase in requests for financial aid from their community in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. The triathlon is just another small way to help rebuild our area.

If you will be in the area or would like to know how you can help please visit the Outer Banks Triathlon site for more information.

Ready, Set, Go! 2010 OBX Marathon Right Around the Corner

Outer Banks Marathon

Outer Banks Marathon

It’s official, fall has arrived on the OBX.  The days are getting shorter, and judging by the Beach & Surf Reports, the temps are cooling off.  It’s tough to see the summer fade away, but it’s great to enjoy the change of seasons, and fall is one of the nicest times of year on the Outer Banks.  So, no complaints from this guy.

In addition to empty beaches, warm days, and cool nights, fall on the Outer Banks means the OBX Marathon is right around the corner.

2010 marks the fifth annual OBX Marathon, and the event is growing by leaps and bounds.  The Marathon, along with other sporting events like the Outer Banks Triathlon, was recently taken over by a newly established group, the Outer Banks Sporting Events.  Jim Snyder, the Marathon event director, and his team have done an amazing job promoting and organizing top-quality events, and the 2010 Marathon will be one to remember.

The OBX Marathon will take place the weekend of November 13th, and it includes events for the entire family…runners and non-runners…even a 26.2 yard “Diaper Dash!”

If you’re a runner looking for an amazing race in an amazing location, there is still time to register.  But hurry, the event is filling up…registration for the ½ marathon is close to closing!

If you’re coming down and need lodging, we’d love to help you find a home that meets all of your needs…we’re even offering free early check-in and late checkout for race participants!

Outer Banks Triathlon On for September

Outer Banks Triathlon

Outer Banks Triathlon

The Outer Banks Triathlon is back, and perhaps bigger and more well organized than ever.

An OBX triathlon was a staple on the Outer Banks for 24 years…before triathlons were as popular as today.  Unfortunately, things changed, and there hasn’t been a true triathlon on the Outer Banks in about seven years.  Attempts have  been made in the past couple years to get the triathlon going again, but weather and water conditions have not cooperated.  A couple years ago there was “dirty water” in Manteo, and last year an offshore hurricane cancelled the swim leg due to large waves.  The races went on as duathlons – bike and run only – but that takes a lot of the excitement out of the race.

In 2010, the triathlon is going back to its roots.  This year’s Outer Banks Triathlon start, finish and transition area will be at the Old Swimming Hole between the Dare County Airport and the N. C. Aquarium on the north end of Roanoke Island on Sept. 18-19.  It will consist of three races that feature the same format, swim, ride and run, but with different distances – Sprint, Olympic and Half.

The route is ideal for racers with a newly-paved road and a canopy of trees that help to keep racers out of the sun.  The Old Swimming Hole also offers a beach and grassy park with Gazebo for spectators and racers to enjoy.

Outer Banks Sporting Events organizers are looking for 250 volunteers as they plan to host three triathlon races over two days in September.  To volunteer or for more information, call Jim Snyder at 252-255-6273.

OUTER BANKS TRIATHLON FESTIVAL

Following OBSE’s style of putting on a great race, we will have live music, food and awards at the post race Pirate Jamboree!  Join us for a great race and a ”Party Like a Pirate!” good time….Arrrgh!!!
