The Outer Banks is best known for gorgeous beaches and great seafood, but there is also a thriving OBX art community.  There are a wide variety of local artists, an endless supply of gorgeous scenery and natural inspiration, and a number of art galleries.

One gallery in particular, the Seaside Art Gallery, is well known for its wide variety of pieces and an extensive collection of local and master artists.  Seaside Art Gallery exhibits the work of local and contemporary artists, as well as a wonderful selection of art by such masters as Picasso, Chagall, Whistler, Icart, Renoir and many others. Sculpture, porcelain and art glass by Hummel, Staffordshire, Tiffany and others are represented. As well as a fine selection of estate jewelry. Since the early 1980′s, a major feature of Seaside Art Gallery has been their large collection of original animation art by such studios as Disney, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, United Features Ltd., and other animation studios.

In addition to a large collection of beautiful art, Seaside Art Gallery has a large affinity for animals, and in partnership with the Outer Banks SPCA, they are bringing Animals in Art to the OBX.

Artists have captured the importance of animals in our lives ever since they have been painting on cave walls. This show will feature our wildlife and artists and those that celebrate the animals we share our lives with.

The Outer Banks SPCA, in collaboration with Seaside Gallery’s 50th Anniversary, is launching an exciting new February event for local residents and visitors – Animals in Art.  On display at Seaside Gallery are animal sketches, paintings, and etchings, as well as figurines, jewelry, cards and many other items.  Portraits of your favorite pet can also be arranged through the Gallery.

During the month of February, Seaside Art Gallery will donate a portion of all sales of animal-related art to the Outer Banks SPCA to help keep animals in our community healthy and safe.  Founded in 1988 by concerned local citizens to address community needs for animal control and care, the Outer Banks SPCA is a private nonprofit organization that relies on donations and volunteer efforts to support its programs.  The Outer Banks SPCA is hosting an opening reception at the Gallery on February 10th, 5-8 PM.  The public and press are invited to join SPCA Board members for this preview event.  For more information call Seaside Gallery at 441-5418 or the Outer Banks SPCA at 475-1587.

Life on the Outer Banks Moves a Little Bit Slower

Every year, beach goers from all walks of life come to the Outer Banks for some rest and relaxation.  The 130-mile barrier island is home to some of the most scenic areas on the East Coast.

“This place is eye candy,” Mike Kelly (local business owner) said. “Sunsets on Jockey’s Ridge, you can’t beat them. It’s great therapy.” Not to mention the fact that there is no shortage of water sport activities to learn.

However, there is an intangible OBX element that attracts all the visitors here each and every year.  Life here on the Outer Banks is just a little slower. It seems that for locals and visitors alike, everyone takes time to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty this one-of-a-kind environment has to offer.

Gorgeous rental homes available at great prices, and the fall is arguably the best time of year to visit…warm water, warm weather, and less crowds.

Pink Sunday” is a grassroots effort that has developed over the past few years to bring awareness to the epidemic of breast cancer, and 2008 marks the first year the Outer Banks will participate.  Local restaurants will be offering discounts to customers wearing pink on Sunday, October 12.  The Participating restaurants are:  Henry’s Beef and Seafood; Stack ‘Em High; Outer Banks Brewing Station; The Colington Cafe; Lone Cedar Cafe; The Full Moon Cafe; Atlantic Coast Cafe; Dolphin Den; Toppers, Sandbar & Grill; Big Al’s Soda Fountain and Grill, Quarter Deck; and Martha Jane’s Kitchen.

The Breast Cancer Task Force of the Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks (HCOB; www.hcobx.org) is sponsoring “Pink Sunday” and other community activities to generate awareness about the importance of early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.  One in seven women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and early detection is one of the key factors in effective treatment and recovery.

Harvest Moon Shines on the Outer Banks – September 14 – 15

September 14 – 15, 2008 – Moonrise at approximately 6:30.

This weekend brings a great opportunity to view the Harvest Moon rising over the waters of the Outer Banks.  A large full moon rising over the ocean is a site worth seeing.

In the northern hemisphere the full moon coming closest to the September 22nd autumn equinox is referred to as the Harvest Moon.

At this time of year in the northern hemisphere the moon rises at a point opposite to the sun, or close to the exact eastern point of the horizon.

The Moon rises only a few minutes later each night, offering several successive evenings with an attractive moonrise close to sunset time and strong moonlight for the majority of the night if the sky is clear.

The strong moonlight after sunset is useful to farmers in northern latitudes who are harvesting their crops, thus the term “Harvest Moon.”

With the gorgeous weather on the Outer Banks at this time year, it should be a very comfortable night to watch the moonrise…maybe even have your toes dipped into the 70 degree water!

If the sky is clear and you have the time, take advantage of this great opportunity…remember to bring your camera!
