Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 2.11.11 – Is Spring on the Way?

Outer Banks - Marley in Nags Head

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, February, 11, 2011.

This video was shot at the Bladen St. beach access in Nags Head, just north of the Nags Head Pier.

Great change from yesterday’s snow. The sun is out, and the temps have returned to 50′s. I took advantage of the nice weather, and took a walk on the beach with my son, Finnley, and my dog, Marley. Almost feels like spring, not quite, but it seems like spring is getting close…I heard today that the official start of spring is only 37 days away!

This nice weather should stick with us through the weekend and into next week. Temps in the 50′s, blue skies, and bright sun.

No surf to report, and judging by the forecast, we probably won’t have any decent swell until the end of next week, but surf conditions change quickly, so I’ll keep an eye on it.

Rock fish are still biting. No boats were able to get out yesterday due to the weather, but I’ve gotten reports all week of boats heading out of Oregon Inlet catching their limit of stripers, and we’re talking big guys…40 – 50 pound rock fish!

Enjoy!

Outer Banks - 2.10.11 - Snow at Avalon Pier

Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Snow Report for Thursday, February 10, 2011.

This video was shot at the Wright Brothers Monument and the Avalon Pier (both in Kill Devil Hills) at 9:00 AM this morning.

The Outer Banks has turned into a winter wonderland. Snow is falling and the wind is blowing. There’s a heavy wind coming out of the north at 20+ mph, and about an inch of the white stuff is on the ground.

No sledding at the Wright Brothers Monument yet, but the kids are out of school today, so I suspect there will be some flying down the hill soon.

No surf today. The fish are still biting, but boats won’t be able to make it out of Oregon Inlet, so the fishing is on hiatus today as well.

The snow is pretty, but I’m ready for spring. Bring on the sunny, warm weather. The good news is the sun will return tomorrow and stay through the weekend, and temps will climb back to the 50′s by the weekend.

Enjoy the snow while it lasts!

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report – 12.13.10 – Cold air is back…& it brings snow…& rock fish!

Outer Banks - Chilly Day at Kitty Hawk Pier

Outer Banks - Chilly Day at Kitty Hawk Pier

Good afternoon. Here’s your Outer Banks, Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Monday, December 13, 2010.

This video was shot at 11:30 AM just south of the Kitty Hawk Pier.

The cold air is back…and it brought snow with it!

Yesterday was in the low 60′s with a light SW wind, but today is completely different. The temps are in the upper 30′s, and there has been consistent snow flurries all morning. It doesn’t seem like any snow will stick, but it’s always fun to see snow at the beach. But I could do without the cold and wind. Wind is in the 15 mph range out of the west today.

There was some fun surf yesterday. The winds weren’t ideal, so it was a bit disorganized, but the air was warm, and there were some long rides to be found. Unfortunately, I missed it!

There isn’t much to report for surf today. There’s some swell still around in the waist high range, but I’m not sure it’s worth it to brave the 24 degree wind chill to get after it.

The great news is that there are reports of rock fish showing up in Corolla! Fishing has been slow for the last couple weeks, but this cold spell should keep pushing the rock fish south, so we should see some good fishing soon.

12 days until Christmas.

Enjoy…and stay warm.

Great View of Outer Banks Snow

The Norfolk Examiner (www.Examiner.com) recently ran a story showing NASA images of the recent snow storms that stretched into the South, and included in the images is a great view from space of the recent snow on the Outer Banks.

Here’s the description from NASA’s Earth Observatory:

With miles of sandy beaches and generally good weather, coastal North Carolina isn’t a place you would usually expect to find snow. But the view from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on February 14, 2010, shows snow extending to the Outer Banks. The sandy islands, normally pale tan, are bright white in this image. Harkers Island received 8.8 inches of snow, reported CNN. The snow fell in a winter storm that moved across the southern United States from Texas to the Atlantic Coast on February 12-13.

Flakes started to fall late Friday night, and by early Saturday the Outer Banks was layered in a sheet of white 2-3 inches thick.  Unfortunately, the wintery scene did not last too long; the feathery flakes turned to heavy rain throughout the morning, and the white landscape gradually shifted to a wintery beach scene.

Just over a year from 2009′s  OBX snow; two years in a row with snow on the Outer Banks.  Although the beach blanketed in snow dissipated quickly, the joys of a day filled with a white landscape, snowballs and snowmen, and some sledding will hold us over until the next wintery storm draws far enough south to grace the OBX with a day slowed to nurture the effects of nature.

Snow on the Outer Banks!

Yesterday (1.20.09) brought a rare occurrence to the Outer Banks; snow!

A winter storm hung over OBX for most of the day, depositing a layer of snow about 1-2 inches thick.

The Outer Banks world slowed a bit as people took advantage of the winter wonderland.
