Outer Banks Behind the Lens: February 2012

Happy March!

Sheesh, March?! Time. It flies.

Spring is right around the corner…one of my favs! Although, this “winter” has been pretty exceptional. In fact, as I type this, I’m enjoying open windows, 70 degree temps, and a gentle breeze that seems to be carrying the sweet smell of spring. :) Hello spring.

When we flip the calendar to a new month, I like to look back at the month in our rear-view for one last glance at the month that was.

As I’ve mentioned in my other Outer Banks Behind the Lens posts, each and everyday I try to make time to get to the beach to snap a photo and give a quick beach report. This morning routine has become one of my favorite times of the day. In addition to the morning photo, I do my best to snap great OBX photos anytime I see a good opportunity.

I just put the finishing touches on a slideshow of all my Outer Banks pictures from February 2012 on Flickr, and in my humble opinion, it’s a great way to kill a few minutes.

Kick back, relax, and enjoy some OBX sights…

2012 is underway, and we now have one month behind us. I don’t want to jinx us, but it was a pretty fabulous month on the Outer Banks – bright sun, blue skies, 60′s, surf…we could use some more fishing, but overall no complaints.

As I’ve mentioned in my other Outer Banks Behind the Lens posts, each and everyday I try to make time to get to the beach to snap a photo and give a quick beach report. This morning routine has become one of my favorite times of the day. In addition to the morning photo, I do my best to snap great OBX photos anytime I see them.

Jordan’s Lens: OBX Sunset

Jordan's Lens: OBX Sunset

Jordan's Lens: OBX Sunset

It’s been a few days without a dose of Jordan’s art to brighten our day. And here is the perfect remedy; a gorgeous shot of an Outer Banks sunset that Jordan captured the other day. The colors are amazing – deep orange through purple in one sky! Awesome.

In addition to snapping that fab pic, Jordan put together a fun video of some Toys from God; fun Outer Banks winter surf. Great song choice Jordan…and I love the description of the video/song choice:

song goes with the feeling of surfing “first time” ….every wave gives you the feeling of joy you got the first time you caught a wave – it never gets old…….me catching some waves.

Keep hunting those Toys from God and sending along your beautiful art. You are adding a great, big bright spot to our day. Thanks Jordan. :)

Happy New Year! Can you believe it?! 2012?!

Wow 2011 flew by. I suspect 2012 will have a similar pace. But I’m going to do my best to help us appreciate some of the simple things – like great Outer Banks photos.

The OBX is a pretty great muse. It’s difficult to take a bad OBX photo, and it’s easy to find inspiration on a daily basis.

Each and everyday I try to make time to get to the beach to snap a photo and give a quick beach report. I share these on a variety of websites, and one of these fabulous websites –Flickr – gives me the ability to create nifty slideshows.

As we close out each month, I collect the OBX photos for the month and craft a quick and easy slideshow to remind us of how beautiful the month was; i.e. Outer Banks Behind the Lens.

Since we just flipped the calendar to January, let’s take a look back at December on the Outer Banks, shall we? Enjoy!

Love the idea? Want to see OBX pictures of something in particular? Just want to say hi? :) Let me know in the comments section. We love to hear from you.

PS – Should I put together a slideshow for all of 2011? I’m thinking yes, right?

Spotlight on the OBX: Bay Dr.

Outer Banks Sunset

Outer Banks Sunset

Our surroundings play a large role in our happiness. A quiet, natural environment tends to bring out our calm, relaxed nature.

I think any neighborhood shrink – ah hem, I mean psychologist – would agree. Any psychologists in the audience?

Anywho…that’s how it works for me anyway. Give me a nice calm beach day, and any worries I may have seem to melt away. I think the Outer Banks has this effect on most visitors. Once we cross that bridge and hit the OBX, our mentality seems to change. As the Mad Magazine dude use to say, “What, me worry?”

The OBX as a whole seems to have this worry-melting effect, but for today’s addition, I’d like to shine the “Spotlight” on just one tiny little road…a microcosm of the macro Outer Banks, if you will.

This one road has the same worry-melting effect for me. It’s quiet, out of the way, Soundfront, a smooth glide for a bike or skateboard, and one of the best spots for an OBX sunset.

Can you guess what road?…don’t look at the title. :)

Ok, it’s Bay Dr.

Bay Drive is one of my favorite places on the Outer Banks. Not only is it one of the best places to catch the sunset, but you can always count on seeing someone you know and catching up with friends. There is a warm sense of community in this neighborhood as you see neighbors waving as they pass each other on the street, chatting in their front yards, or biking/running at sundown.

Located in Kill Devil Hills, NC, Bay Drive is a beautiful residential street that runs along Kitty Hawk Bay and is home to many Outer Banks locals.

I’ll zip it so you can enjoy the tour…and the Outer Banks sunset…

Ok, it may not be a top 10 list from Time Magazine or National Geographic, but it’s a list and we love lists…especially when the Outer Banks is on them!  Plus, you can’t argue with the premise…OBX sunsets are pretty spectacular.

CheapOAir.com recently compiled their list of the Five Best Places to See Sunsets in the U.S., and the Outer Banks made the list.

Yay OBX!

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Sunset Cruise

Can you imagine a more perfect ending to a great day on the Outer Banks?  A sunset sail on the Sound!

This is a sailing club out of Colington Harbor that sets sail for a sunset cruise every Wednesday during the summer.

I’ve yet to have the pleasure of soaking up the scene while afloat with the club, but this is a pretty cool sight from land too.

OBX Pic O’ the Day: Just Another Day?

There is no such thing as an ordinary sunset on the Outer Banks. Every day brings a unique view and a unique experience.

There is no better way to end the day than watching the big orange ball change its color gradient and glide below the water line.
