Jordan’s Lens: OBX Sunset

Jordan's Lens: OBX Sunset

It’s been a few days without a dose of Jordan’s art to brighten our day. And here is the perfect remedy; a gorgeous shot of an Outer Banks sunset that Jordan captured the other day. The colors are amazing – deep orange through purple in one sky! Awesome.

In addition to snapping that fab pic, Jordan put together a fun video of some Toys from God; fun Outer Banks winter surf. Great song choice Jordan…and I love the description of the video/song choice:

song goes with the feeling of surfing “first time” ….every wave gives you the feeling of joy you got the first time you caught a wave – it never gets old…….me catching some waves.

Keep hunting those Toys from God and sending along your beautiful art. You are adding a great, big bright spot to our day. Thanks Jordan. :)

Outer Banks Cinemagraph: OBX Wind Energy at Jennette’s Pier

Have you heard of these super cool picture/video thingys called “cinemagrpahs?”

They’re awesome. Basically a still picture with a subtle touch of motion…a picture with a tiny piece of video. Very cool.

Here’s the definition from WikipediaCinemagraphs are still photographs in which a minor and repeated movement occurs. Cinemagraphs can give the illusion that the viewer is watching a video.

I’ve been trying to get all of the pieces in line to create one, and I finally figured it out. At the risk of being less than humble, I have to say that I think it’s pretty groovy.

Below is our first of many Outer Banks Cinemagraphs. It is a picture of a beautiful day at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head with the wind turbines spinning to generate some OBX wind energy. Rad right?!

Stay tuned; we’ll have more OBX Cinemagraphs headed your way soon. And if you have a special one that you’d like to see, please let me know in the comments below…I love to hear from you. :)

Oh yeah, and let me know what you think of the Outer Banks Cinemagraphs…cool or what?

PS – You may have the click on the picture to get the full effect of the movement. :)

Outer Banks: Gorgeous Winter Day at Jennette’s Pier

Outer Banks: 1.6.12 - Gorgeous January Day at Jennette's Pier

Outer Banks: 1.6.12 - Gorgeous January Day at Jennette's Pier

It’s January. The sun is shining, the skies are blue, the ocean shimmers like a sea of diamonds, and the temps are in the 60′s. Winter perfection.

Of course, it could be 35 degrees with winds blowing at 25 mph two days later, but that’s the beauty of the Outer Banks. All four seasons reveal themselves on the OBX, but even the nastiest chill is leveled off by the potential for spring-like conditions around every corner.

Since we have the pleasure of sun and 60′s in January, I was motivated to get out and make the most of it. Yesterday I ventured down to Jennette’s Pier to take in the perfect weather and empty beaches. The pier was quiet. And the beaches even quieter.

Such a peaceful winter scene. Summer on the Outer Banks is amazing, but the serenity of the winter months are tough to beat.

Since you weren’t able to ride shotgun on my trip, I whipped together a quick video.

Enjoy a gorgeous winter day at Jennette’s Pier…

Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report: 12.20.11 – Great Weather & Fun Surf

Outer Banks: 12.20.11 - Great Weather & Fun Surf

Outer Banks: 12.20.11 - Great Weather & Fun Surf

Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks, Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, December 20, 2011.

This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 9:00 AM.

Only 5 days until Christmas. Wow, time flies. This my last report until after the holiday, so I want to wish you a merry Christmas. I’ll be back soon.

Great day for my last report before the holiday. Great weather and fun surf carrying over from yesterday. Sun, 50′s, light offshore breeze out of the southwest. Looking ahead we could have a few spots of rain, but nothing extensive. Looks like Christmas week will be mostly sunny with temps around 60…perfect OBX Christmas weather.

The surf is fun today. Waist to chest high and real clean with the southwest wind. The offshore wind will stick around through Thursday morning. The swell will fade, but fun surf will stick around…even if it is a bit small. Gotta love surfing on Christmas week…thanks Santa.

OBX fishing has slowed down, but the good news is that the stripers are arriving. Sporadic reports of some great catches. Over the weekend, our friends at Rock Solid Fishing reported a 50 pound striper hauled in at the Oregon Inlet bridge. Definitely some big fish showing up, and we should have a great OBX striper bite real soon.

Have a great holiday. Hope to see you soon. Have fun!

Beautiful day. Great start to Christmas week on the Outer Banks. Sun, 50′s, light southwest breeze at 5 mph.

Waist to chest surf with clean conditions.

Fishing is slow, but the stripers are arriving. Our friends at Rock Solid Fishing reported a 50 pound striper being hauled in yesterday the Oregon Inlet bridge.

Spotlight on the OBX: Manteo

Outer Banks: Manteo Light

Outer Banks: Manteo Light

Just to the West of the Outer Banks (but really still part of the OBX), is a tiny little town called Manteo that may remind you of Mayberry…in fact, Andy Griffith lives there!

It is a definite hidden treasure, so we figured we swing the “Spotlight” over yonder to give you a quick tour.

The Town of Manteo wraps around Shallowbag Bay on the eastern side of Roanoke Island, part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Named the seat of government for Dare County in 1870, this waterfront community incorporated in 1899.

It is home to the NC Aquarium, The Lost Colony outdoor drama, the Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Island Festival park, and a super cool waterfront that has shops, restaurants, and some amazing art galleries.

During the Spring and Summer, Manteo hosts an outdoor event each first Friday of the month, cleverly called “First Friday,” that offers some outdoor entertainment, food, music, and art.

Manteo is a definite must-do for your next OBX vacation.

But to get back to that whole Mayberry comparison, here’s what RoanokeIsland.net has to say…

The Roanoke Island town of Manteo is often compared to Mayberry because it holds a similar small-town character — and characters — and all the charm, hospitality and friendliness that come with that designation. Since this town bears so much resemblance to fictional Mayberry, is it a coincidence that Andy Griffith has lived here off and on since the 1940s? Most likely not, since Griffith himself once said, “If Mayberry is anywhere, it is Manteo.”

Manteo is the lively Dare County seat and an up-and-coming shopping/dining/cultural center that throws out the welcome mat for visitors.

Now I’ll zip it so you can enjoy the tour…

PS – As a bonus, here’s a video for Brad Paisley’s “Waiting on a Woman” that won Video of the Year a couple years ago and was filmed on the Outer Banks featuring Andy Griffith…welcome to Mayberry…I mean Manteo. :)

Great Intro to the Surfers Competing in the Outer Banks Battle of the Banks

OBX Hurricane Earl Surf

OBX Hurricane Earl Surf

We are in the midst of the month and a half long waiting period for the Outer Banks Battle of the Banks surf contest, and the ocean is flat, flat, flat.  Might as well think of it as Lake Atlantic.

I hear patience is a virtue, so I guess I’ll have faith the heavy barrels will arrive soon.

While we patiently wait, we might as well enjoy a great video from the inaugural 2008 Battle of the Banks that shows the OBX surf at its finest, and a great intro to all of the surfers in the 2010 Battle of the Banks.

2008 Battle of the Banks video – huge chocolate barrels!

Intro to 2010 Battle of the Banks surfers – photos of each surfer with insightful – well, probably more witty than insightful – audio commentary by Jeff Myers (Outer Banks Team) and Brendan Petticrew (Virginia Beach Team).

Outer Banks Vacation Experience – Crab Hunter

We recently gave a Flipcam to a group of guests, and this is their Outer Banks Vacation Experience.

Beautiful OBX sunrise, hunting some crab, and enjoying the pool.

We are looking forward to welcoming them back to the OBX soon!

Outer Banks Hurricane Earl Recap – Surf, Evacuation, Wind, & More Surf

OBX Hurricane Earl Surf

OBX Hurricane Earl Surf

Hurricane Earl cruised by the Outer Banks last week, and he gave the OBX quite a scare.  Packing 145 mph winds at its peak and passing only 80 miles off the coast, Earl was very difficult to predict, and he forced a mandatory evacuation of the islands for all visitors.

Luckily, his bark was worse than his bite, and the Outer Banks only saw tropical storm force winds and heavy rains.  Minor damage and some flooding followed, but it could have been much worse.

As the silver lining, surf was epic.  The following day, the sun was shining and the surfers were out in full force.  Both before and after the storm, Earl sent monster waves that were cleaned nicely by the west winds.  Near perfect OBX surf.

And near perfect weather for Labor Day weekend.  Fall on the Outer Banks is in full swing…arguably the best time to be on the OBX.
