Update: OBX Beach Report & Outer Banks Pro – 9.24.10.
The 2009 WRV Battle of the Banks was slow to develop with contest days being canceled due to overwash on the route South and poor wave conditions on the Outer Banks for most of October (with the exception of the overwash day where waves did go off, but road conditions made it difficult for VA and OB teams to reach the contest location on time…see the clip below of the action). However, the elements aligned on Thanksgiving, and the teams from Virginia Beach and the OBX took time away from their turkeys to get in the water.
The conditions weren’t quite as heavy as last year’s thundering barrels, but there were plenty of chest to head high waves rolling in. It was a heated contest, and the results came down to the final round when Virginia Beach pulled away to hold onto the coveted title…and the bragging rights
The stars aligned yesterday on the Outer Banks.Wind, swell, and weather were close to perfect, combing to create ideal conditions for the WRV “Battle of the Banks” held in Rodanthe.
It was a gorgeous fall day on the Outer Banks, with sunny conditions bringing the temperature to the low 70’s, and holding the water temperature in the mid 60’s.A strong offshore wind combined with swell leftover from the weekend’s storm to bring chest to head high sets of clean, glassy waves and a lot of “tubes.”
The overall result from the competition was a great day of surfing had by all.Specifically, the Virginia Beach team left victorious, and Nags Head’s Pat McManus ended the day with the overall victory due in large part to his impressive skills in the “tubes” that developed. In addition to the “Best Barrel” awarded by Billabong earlier this month, Jesse Hines scored the best barrel yesterday taking home $500 from Hurley.
Wave Riding Vehicles is holding its annual Outer Banks Pro surfing competition in Rodanthe between October 19 and 26.
It is an invitation-only event being billed as the “Battle of the Banks.” Two 12-man teams will meet in the waters of the Outer Banks. The teams will be divided between 12 surfers from Virginia Beach and 12 surfers from the Outer Banks.
Surfline is going to forecast the actual day of the event and will give a three to five day window for event organizers to choose the day with the best surf.
This is a one day event and the winning team will take home $3,600 while the losing team will share $1,900.But more than money, there are big bragging rights on the line.
