Outer Banks: 2.3.12 - Fresh Salt Air & Chilly Wind in Kitty Hawk
Good morning. Here’s your OBX Moment of Zen for Friday, February 3, 2012.
This video was shot just south of the Kitty Hawk Pier at 8:30 AM.
Happy Friday! The fresh salt air smells great this morning, but we have a stuff northeast wind sending the freshness our way. Chilly compared to the last few days; sun, 50, and a 15 mph wind off the ocean. Back up near 60 tomorrow.
Lots of wind swell churning up the water, but no surf. If you’re itching to get in the water, there could be a tiny longboard wave tomorrow.
Fishing is slow. Bright spot is the tuna offshore.
Good morning. Here’s your OBX Moment of Zen for Friday, January 27, 2012.

Warm weather feels great. 60′s today. But we are starting with some clouds. Morning t-storms are moving out, and hopefully we’ll see the sun this afternoon.
Sun will stick around for the weekend, but temps will dip to the 50′s.
A little swell in the area, but no surf this morning. The wind is stiff out of the south pushing the t-storms out. But we we could see a good wind switch to the southwest after lunch that could clean up the swell for an afternoon surf session. Small window of opportunity, so keep your eye on it.
OBX fishing is slow. Tuna offshore. Some dog fish and tile fish around Jennette’s Pier, but still no stripers.
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks, Beach, Surf & Fishing Report for Tuesday, January 24, 2012.
This video was shot at the Lillian St. beach access in Kitty Hawk at 8:45 AM.
Two days in a row of warm temps, fog, and surf. A little rain and fog to start today, but the sun should fight it’s way out. 60 degree temps and surf have carried over from yesterday with a light offshore breeze put of the southwest.
Temps will dip to the upper 40′s tomorrow but jump back to 60 to close out the week.
We had head high waves in the area yesterday. That swell will fade to waist high through today, the light offshore breeze is cleaning up the waves nicely. The tide is a bit heigh this morning, but late morning should see some fun surf.
The wind will switch a bit north this afternoon so there could be a bit of chop later today, but today could be the best surf this week. Hit it.
OBX fishing is slow. Still waiting on that striper bite. In the meantime, we’re getting good reports of blue fin tuna offshore.
Good morning. Here’s your OBX Moment of Zen for Monday, January 23, 2012.

Foggy start, but the sun is fighting its way out. Mild temps in the 60′s. Mild week ahead with temps 50-60, some spots of rain, but mostly sunny.
Big swell in the area today. Still a bit messy this morning, the light southwest wind should clean up the surf throughout the morning. Chest + surf today, and as the swell fades, waist + surf tomorrow.
OBX fishing is slow. Still waiting on the striper bite. The good news is we are still getting reports of big blue fin tuna offshore from the boats out of Oregon Inlet.
Outer Banks: 12.15.11 - Perfect OBX December Surf Day
Note: Sorry about the lack of audio. Not sure what happened there. But if you forward to about the 1:50 mark, you can get a look at the beach and waves. Enjoy!
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, December 15, 2011.
This video was shot at the Nags Head Pier at 10 AM.
Amazing December day! Sun and temps at 65 degrees. Temps will dip back to 50′s looking ahead, but looks like great OBX weather all the way through Christmas.
Big news for the day is the surf. Perfect weather, a light southwest breeze, and clean chest high surf. Hit it if your on the OBX. Tomorrow looks like more of the same, but the wind will be stronger and the swell will fade through the day. Water temps at 52 degrees.
OBX fishing is slow, but stripers are on the way; so we should have a great striper bite soon.
Good morning. Here’s your Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, December 13, 2011.
This video was shot at the Hayman St. beach access in Kill Devil Hills at 9:00 AM.
December is moving quickly. A little less than two weeks until Christmas (my math was off in the video)!
Pretty day with bright sun, blue skies, temps in the 50′s, but a stiff northeast wind is adding a chill to the day. Temps will warm up to the 60′s over the next couple days, and the sun will stick with us through the week.
Unfortunately, no surf to report today. There is chest high swell, but this northeast wind is knocking it down. The good news is that Thursday and Friday look decent. The swell will stick with us, the wind should switch to the southwest. Thursday looks like chest high surf with a southwest wind at 5-10 mph. The swell will drop and the wind will pick up a bit for Friday, but it still looks like it could be a decent day for OBX surf. Water temps at 55 degrees so you’ll need a 5/4 wetsuit.
OBX fishing is slow. Wind is stiff and water temps are cooling. The good news is that stripers are showing up. Two 40 pounders caught at the Oregon Inlet bridge two weekends ago, and a 30 pounder caught in Mann’s Harbor this past weekend.
Outer Banks: 12.1.11 - Pretty But Chilly at Kitty Hawk Pier
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, December 1, 2011.
This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:00 AM.
Happy December! I’m not sure how it is that time moves so quickly. I can recall looking at the clock in school and feeling like it was moving backwards, yet now I feel like I blink and a month goes by. This means I’m getting old, right? Dang!
Great time to start thinking about those spring and summer vacations…create some warm thoughts on chilly days, and beat the crowd to the house you want. Take a look at our gorgeous OBX vacation rental homes (www.OuterBanksVacations.com).
But back to the subject at hand; what’s the beach like today? In a word, chilly. We enjoyed some awesome weather over the Thanksgiving weekend and into the beginning of this week – sun and upper 60′s – but that has changed a bit. The sun is sticking with us, but the temps have dipped to the mid 50′s, and there’s a strong northeast wind blowing at 15-20 mph today…definitely adding a chill to the air.
Looking ahead, the weekend looks great with sun, temps around 60 degrees, and the wind will slow down.
Unfortunately, no surf to report. We have swell in the chest high range, but this stiff onshore wind is making it real messy. Doesn’t look like the wind will swing back offshore until next week.
Fishing is slow today too. Fast wind = a slow day. Still a lot of speckled trout in the area, and hopefully we’ll see a good striper bite soon. Keep your fingers crossed.
Outer Banks: 11.10.11 - Great Trout Fishing at Kitty Hawk Pier
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Thursday, November 10, 2011.
This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:00 AM.
Before I get into the report today, I’d like to wish all of the Marines a happy birthday. Today is the United States Marine Corps birthday, so Semper Fi to y’all!
We have a great fall day to celebrate. Sun, 60′s, light north wind at 5-10 mph, and water temps at 60 degrees. This weather will stick with us for the next few days.
The wildcard will be the wind. The wind should pick up to about 20 mph tomorrow, but it will slow down again for the weekend. The weekend weather looks great with sun and 60′s. Sunday’s weather for the Outer Banks Marathon looks fantastic; sun, 65 degrees, and a southwest wind at about 10 mph. Great day for running!
We have some big swell in the area, but the wind isn’t matching up. Although, today the wind is light enough where you could find some decent head high sections that are relatively clean. Tomorrow should be a mess with 20 mph winds out of the north and swell in the 6-9 foot range with a big storm moving north through the Atlantic.
The surf will clean up this weekend when the wind switches to the southwest, but the swell is going to fade at the same time. Seems like we should see waves in the keen to waist range for the weekend. Small, but clean and great weather. Could be worth getting in the water.
The big story over the past couple days is the OBX fishing. Trout fishing is going off on the piers and in the surf! There are some good striper catches in the Sound, and offshore they are pulling in yellow fin tuna.
Outer Banks: 11.8.11 - Gorgeous Day & Great Fishing at Kitty Hawk Pier
Good morning. Here’s the Outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Tuesday, November 8, 2011.
This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 9:00 AM.
Another gorgeous fall OBX day. Bright sun, blue skies, temps in the 60′s, and the wind has finally slowed down. We’ve had a stiff north wind with us for a few days. Over the weekend, the gusts were up to about 30 mph, so it’s a nice change of pace to have the wind slow down to about 5 – 10 mph today. We’ll see this weather for the rest of the week.
Unfortunately, this wind has not been helping the Outer Banks surf. We’ve had some big swell hanging around for about week, but this north wind is making the surf a mess. The swell is about head high today, and it will be with us for most of the week, but so will the north wind. The wind will swing around to the southwest towards the end of the week, but the swell will be fading at the same time.
There’s a good chance the weekend could see some clean surf, but it will fade to the knee to waist range by then. The good news is the water is still pretty warm. It is 60 degrees at the Avalon Pier this morning.
The heavy winds have slowed fishing down quite a bit over the last week, but things are looking up now that the wind has slowed down. There was a lot of activity while I was at the Kitty Hawk Pier this morning. I saw about 10 keeper trout in the 20 minutes I was there!
Stripers, speckled trout, grey trout, some puppy drum. Still a whole bunch of fish in the area. Always a great time to be at the beach!
